This book was released on 2009-04-13 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[A] very useful resource, not only for psychologists and education professionals, but universally, for all those experts interested in multicultural assessment." --Heikki Lyytinen, PhD Professor of Developmental Neuropsychology University of Jyv‰skyl‰, Finland This volume provides a thorough and provocative examination of how different cultures measure intelligence and skill, why they use the tools they use, and how their assessment methods are changing in the globalizing world. The contributors discuss the extent to which methods of assessment are limited and culture-bound. These methods must be revised and adapted to become relevant to foreign cultures. To this end, this book uses theoretical models and empirical studies to explore the use and validity of standardized tests, language and literacy tests, job interviews, and other methods of assessment across various cultures from both developed and developing countries. Key topics include: National and international standards and guidelines for test development and use Limitations of Western assessment tools for populations in the developing world The challenges of measuring abilities and competencies in Hispanics/Latinos Developing and adapting language and literacy assessments in Arabic-speaking countries Assessing competencies in reading and mathematics in Zambian children

Download or read book The Traffic in Babies written by Karen A. Balcom and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1930 and the mid-1970s, several thousand Canadian-born children were adopted by families in the United States. At times, adopting across the border was a strategy used to deliberately avoid professional oversight and take advantage of varying levels of regulation across states and provinces. The Traffic in Babies traces the efforts of Canadian and American child welfare leaders—with intermittent support from immigration officials, politicians, police, and criminal prosecutors—to build bridges between disconnected jurisdictions and control the flow of babies across the Canada-U.S. border. Karen A. Balcom details the dramatic and sometimes tragic history of cross-border adoptions—from the Ideal Maternity Home case and the Alberta Babies-for-Export scandal to trans-racial adoptions of Aboriginal children. Exploring how and why babies were moved across borders, The Traffic in Babies is a fascinating look at how social workers and other policy makers tried to find the birth mothers, adopted children, and adoptive parents who disappeared into the spaces between child welfare and immigration laws in Canada and the United States.

Download or read book The Power of Large Numbers written by Joshua Cole and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French government officials have long been known among Europeans for the special attention they give to the state of their population. In the first half of the nineteenth century, as Paris doubled in size and twice suffered the convulsions of popular revolution, civic leaders looked with alarm at what they deemed a dangerous population explosion. After defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, however, the falling birthrate generated widespread fears of cultural and national decline. In response, legislators promoted larger families and the view that a well-regulated family life was essential for France. In this innovative work of cultural history, Joshua Cole examines the course of French thinking and policymaking on population issues from the 1780s until the outbreak of the Great War. During these decades increasingly sophisticated statistical methods for describing and analyzing such topics as fertility, family size, and longevity made new kinds of aggregate knowledge available to social scientists and government officials. Cole recounts how this information heavily influenced the outcome of debates over the scope and range of public welfare legislation. In particular, as the fear of depopulation grew, the state wielded statistical data to justify increasing intervention in family life and continued restrictions on the autonomy of women.
