Or, le capitalisme, mode de production antagonique, est entré, depuis longtemps déjà, dans son agonie, à laquelle il n'a réussi à survivre qu'en raison des coups que le fascisme a porté au mouvement ouvrier. Mais la classe ouvrière s’est remise de ses attaques et, par la radicalisation de ses luttes, porte partout des coups décisifs à la bourgeoisie, précipitant ses contradictions et les déplaçant à son détriment. Pour élargir ses marges de manœuvre, celle-ci essaie d'en appeler au « civisme » des travailleurs pour défendre « l'intérêt national ». Ce qui n’est qu'essayer de les convaincre d'accepter une exploitation accrue, pour réaliser l'intérêt du capital. Pour tenter de justifier - au niveau idéologique - cette tentative politique, les économistes apologétiques ont élaboré une politique économique, modèle visant à rendre cohérente la politique menée par l'État bourgeois au niveau économique. L'objet de ce livre n'est pas tant de critiquer cette élaboration - d'un point de vue de classe - mais d'en dénoncer les contradictions internes. Derrière l'apparente rigueur du modèle, en effet, s'engouffrent les sophismes et tautologies caractéristiques de l'économie vulgaire, qui trouvent leur source dans les contradictions inhérentes au mode de production capitaliste, que ces économistes tentent de justifier.

Glimcher argues that Cartesian dualism operates from the false premise that the reflex is able to describe behavior in the real world that animals inhabit. A mathematically rich cognitive theory, he claims, could solve the most difficult problems that any environment could present, eliminating the need for dualism by eliminating the need for a reflex theory. Such a mathematically rigorous description of the neural processes that connect sensation and action, he explains, will have its roots in microeconomic theory. Economic theory allows physiologists to define both the optimal course of action that an animal might select and a mathematical route by which that optimal solution can be derived. Glimcher outlines what an economics-based cognitive model might look like and how one would begin to test it empirically. Along the way, he presents a fascinating history of neuroscience. He also discusses related questions about determinism, free will, and the stochastic nature of complex behavior.

Like the other series, these chronicles provide a survey of significant trends in contemporary philosophical discussion from 1970 to 1985. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the last years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the emergence of new schools of thought, the convergence of interest (thought not neces sarily of opinion) of different traditions upon certain problems, the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, and the growing signifi cance for philosophical discourse of the social, political and cul tural situation in various regions of the world are the most impor tant contributory factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valu able source of knowledge of this complexity and may as such be an assistance in renewing the understanding of one's own philo sophical problems. The surveys, it is to be hoped, may also help to strengthen a world-wide Socratic element of modern philosophy, the dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume examines new forms of cultural diversity which result from migration and globalization. Historically, most liberal democracies have developed on the basis of national cultures – either a single one, or a dominant one, or a federation of several ones. However, political and economic developments have upset traditional patterns and have blurred established boundaries. Ongoing immigration from diverse origins has inserted new ethnic minorities into formerly homogenous populations. Democratic liberties and rights provided opportunities for old and new marginalized minorities to resist assimilation and to assert identities. The resulting pattern of multiculturalism is different from earlier ones. Often cultural boundaries are neither clearly defined nor do they simply dissolve by assimilation into a dominant group – they have become fuzzy and a constant source of real or imagined hostility and anxiety. A proliferation of mixed identities goes together with stronger claims for cultural rights and escalating hostilities between ethnic minorities and national majorities. In many countries multiculturalism is today perceived as a challenge rather than as an enrichment. The book focuses on the question how institution and policies of liberal democracies can cope with these trends. The book addresses two tasks: 1) To compare different national contexts and types of ethnic groups (immigrant and indigenous, linguistic and religious minorities) and to discuss how policies of multicultural integration have to be adapted in order to cope with such differences. 2) To evaluate the impact of common rends of globalization which link societies and encourage convergence between national models of multicultural integration.
