Book Boileau L art Po tique Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boileau L art Po tique Classic Reprint written by D. Nichol Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boileau L'art Poetique It is hoped that the present edition of Boileau's Art poetique will be found useful by students of English literature as well as by students of French. It may at least claim to be not altogether superfluous, for, despite Boileau's reputation, and great as his influence once was, it is the first critical edition published in this country. The notes - for which considerable help has been obtained from the commentaries of Saint-Marc, Delaporte, and Gazier - are rather historical and literary than grammatical, though passages which are likely to present any difficulty in the language are explained. The spelling and punctuation of the text are modernised. The part of the introduction dealing with Boileau's doctrine of poetry has been suggested to a certain extent by M. Ferdinand Brunetiere's article in the Revue des deux Mondes of 1st June 1889 on the "Esthetique de Boileau." Dr Henry Jackson has kindly read over the proofs, and to him, and to Mr G. Gregory Smith, I am deeply indebted for advice and suggestions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a critical selection of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture’s highly influential conférences is available in English. Between 1667 and 1792, the artists and amateurs of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in Paris lectured on the Académie’s conférences, foundational documents in the theory and practice of art. These texts and the principles they embody guided artistic practice and art theory in France and throughout Europe for two centuries. In the 1800s, the Académie’s influence waned, and few of the 388 Académie lectures were translated into English. Eminent scholars Christian Michel and Jacqueline Lichtenstein have selected and annotated forty-two of the most representative lectures, creating the first authoritative collection of the conférences for readers of English. Essential to understanding French art of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, these lectures reveal what leading French artists looked for in a painting or sculpture, the problems they sought to resolve in their works, and how they viewed their own and others’ artistic practice.

Book Twenty first century Perspectives on Nineteenth century Art

Download or read book Twenty first century Perspectives on Nineteenth century Art written by Petra ten-Doesschate Chu and published by Associated University Presse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents an interdisciplinary and inclusive view of nineteenth-century art, observed from the vantage point of the new twenty-first century. The areas of expertise represented by the thirty essays herein span the full range of nineteenth-century studies, and include discussions of such artistic styles as realism, impressionism, romanticism, and art nouveau, as well as early twentieth-century movements that owe their formative influence to the nineteenth century. Topics span the historical gamut from revivalism to the roots of modernism, considering along the way such themes as the depiction of women, Orientalism, art criticism, evolutionary theory, political propaganda, history painting, landscape, and national identity. Aspects of art display, public monuments, and international exhibitions shed light on the roles of government and individuals in the dissemination of artistic styles and subject matter. Unique in this collection is an emphasis on the marketing of art, both in America and abroad, which considers the important financial and commercial issues that continue to influence viewers' beliefs and perceptions. Most important, this book demonstrates that the rich field of nineteenth-century studies continues to inspire discovery and creativity."--Publisher description.

Download or read book A Delicate Matter written by Oliver Wunsch and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century France witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of materially unstable art, from oil paintings that cracked within years of their creation to enormous pastel portraits vulnerable to the slightest touch or vibration. In A Delicate Matter, Oliver Wunsch traces these artistic practices to the economic and social conditions that enabled them: an ascendant class of art collectors who embraced fragile objects as a means of showcasing their disposable wealth. While studies of Rococo art have traditionally focused on style and subject matter, this book reveals how the physical construction of paintings and sculptures was central to the period’s reconceptualization of art. Drawing on sources ranging from eighteenth-century artists’ writings to twenty-first-century laboratory analyses, Wunsch demonstrates how the technical practices of eighteenth-century painters and sculptors provoked a broad transformation in the relationship between art, time, and money. Delicacy, which began the eighteenth century as a commodified extension of courtly sociability, was by century’s end reimagined as the irreducible essence of art’s autonomous value. Innovative and original, A Delicate Matter is an important intervention in the growing body of scholarship on durability and conservation in eighteenth-century French art. It challenges the art historical tendency to see decay as little more than an impediment to research, instead showing how physical instability played a critical role in establishing art’s meaning and purpose.
