Enfin, l’impact des principaux lipides sur des pathologies naguère encore peu explorées sous cet aspect est exposé en détail. Les lipides – Nutrition et santé présente, de façon synthétique, un très large panorama de toutes les facettes des lipides, des acides gras aux corps gras les moins abondants, mais tout aussi importants pour l’équilibre de notre organisme. Il permet aux spécialistes de revisiter les principales sources de lipides présentes dans notre alimentation en insistant sur leur production et leur composition. Book excerpt: The renewal of interest in peritoneal dialysis as a treatment modality for patients with end-stage renal disease was stimulated by the report of Po povich and his colleagues in 1976 on the technique of CAPD. With the in troduction of commercial dialysate-containing plastic bags, which mark edly reduced the incidence of peritonitis, the use of CAPD as a primary treatment modality has increased significantly. At the present time, more than 12% of the patients undergoing dialysis in the United States are utiliz ing CAPD; however, the use of CAPD among pediatric patients is con siderably greater. The First International Symposium on CAPD in Children was orga nized in order to gather together experts with experience in treating chil dren undergoing CAPD in an attempt to exchange current information on the utilization of this emerging technique in children. Since pediatric pa tients comprise a small percentage of the CAPD population and since lim ited data were available concerning specific methodology and complica tions of CAPD in children, it was hoped that an international symposium would provide a forum for an exchange of experience that would ultimate ly lead to better adaptation and increased utilization of this technique.

Ces investissements auraient toutefois des retornbees substantielles : 65 millions de cas de retard de croissance et 265 millions de cas danemie chez la femme auraient ete evites en 2025 comparati vement a I' annee de reference 2015. En outre, sur 10 ans, au moins 91 millions d' enfants supplementaires auraient ete traites pour emaciation severe et 105 millions de nourrissons additionnels auraient ete beneficiaires d'un allaitement matemel exclusif au cours de leurs premiers six mois de vie. L'atteintede l'ensemble de ces cibles permettrait d'eviter au moins 3,7 millions de mortalites infantiles. Chaque dollar investi dans ce paquet d'interventions genererait des rendements econorniques de4 a 35 dollars, ce qui fait du financement de la nutrition precoce l'une des interventions de developpement les plus rentables. Certaines des cibles - particulierement celles qui sont axees sur la reduction du retard de croissance chez l'enfant et de I'anemie chez la femmeparaissent ambitieuses et demanderont des efforts concertes de financement, de mise a l' echelle et d' engagement continu; toutefois, l' experience tiree de plusieurs pays indique que leur atteinte reste possible. Les investissements au cours des 1000 premiers jours decisifs de la petite enfance sont inalienables, transportables et porteurs de retombees tout au long de la vie - non seulement pour les enfants directement concernes, mais aussi pour nous tous - sous forme de societes plus robustes, qui agissent comme moteur des economies a venir.

Book excerpt: Despite the developing emphasis in current scholarship on children in Roman culture, there has been relatively little research to date on the role and significance of the youngest children within the family and in society. This volume singles out this youngest age group, the under one-year-olds, in the first comprehensive study of infancy and earliest childhood to encompass the Roman Empire as a whole: integrating social and cultural history with archaeological evidence, funerary remains, material culture, and the iconography of infancy, it explores how the very particular historical circumstances into which Roman children were born affected their lives as well as prevailing attitudes towards them. Examination of these varied strands of evidence, drawn from throughout the Roman world from the fourth century BC to the third century AD, allows the rhetoric about earliest childhood in Roman texts to be more broadly contextualized and reveals the socio-cultural developments that took place in parent-child relationships over this period. Presenting a fresh perspective on archaeological and historical debates, the volume refutes the notion that high infant mortality conditioned Roman parents not to engage in the early life of their children or to view them, or their deaths, with indifference, and concludes that even within the first weeks and months of life Roman children were invested with social and gendered identities and were perceived as having both personhood and value within society.
