Book excerpt: La Négritude: An African Social Humanism seeks to tackle accounts of African society—particularly sub-Saharan Africa—from its roots through modern times. La Négritude—meaning Blackness in French—was coined as a term in the 1930s, initially as a strategy for political resistance against French colonialism. As the resistance matured, its namesake developed to refer to being proud to be Black, proud of being a Negro—the true and correct word for defining an African Black man’s ethnicity. Instead of being disrespectful, the word became meaningful and beautiful in terms of what it portrayed. Because of the effects of slavery and colonialism, the traditional Negro-African society transformed into a modern society so different from the old one that many expressed a loss of identity culturally, politically, and economically. This study attempts to redefine and reidentify sub-Saharan Negro-African society using the traditional values that existed before or during the era of colonialism. Its goal is to instill a sense of security and unity among the people—with the understanding that adding changes from outside Negro-Africa could allow positive growth and development without fear of destroying the African character and personality.

Focusing on the transformation of Muslim institutions—especially modernized Muslim schools (médersas) and voluntary organizations—over the past hundred years, Louis Brenner uncovers the social and political processes that have produced new forms, definitions, and expressions of Islam that are patently different from those that prevailed a century earlier. Brenner's study shows that Muslim society in Mali is religiously pluralistic and that it has developed different ways of relating religious obligations to prevailing social and political conditions. Although they were heavily influenced by French and Middle Eastern models, Brenner demonstrates that it was in opposition to French colonial authority that the first médersas and voluntary associations appeared. Book excerpt: At the center of current debates surrounding the social function of museums, questions concerning museum activities and the participation of both inhabitants and the public arise. In 2019, these questions were the subject of many heated debates at the 34th General Assembly of ICOM in Kyoto, which intended to propose a new definition of the museum. As the representations of the tensions between Universalist and Communitarian approaches are not only largely dependent on the historical and socio-political contexts of the various countries concerned, a generational angle must also be considered. It thus seems totally anachronistic to try to defend a dichotomous vision that is far too simplistic. At the heart of these current events and international issues, this collective work studies, in an international context, the values, actions and discourses advocated for participating in processes such as collection, selection, conservation and interpretation of heritage elements linked to the territories, resources, knowledge and know-how of various communities. The analysis of the tensions and asymmetries of power between various groups of actors – politicians, managers, scientists, visitors, representatives of local or diasporic populations, among others – particularly in the context of decolonization policies of museums, is also a major part of this book.
