Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bantu Authorities: Apartheid's System of Race and Ethnicity, Veronica Ehrenreich-Risner provides the first holistic study of the Bantu Authorities (BA) system that implemented rural apartheid. The system extended segregation by including ethnos theory to establish underfunded “self-governing” homelands to curb the expense of “native” administration yet retain control of the cheap labor upon which white capital depended. Based on over sixty interviews with Zulus and former commissioners, and archival research, Bantu Authorities proves the primary objective of the system was to protect white capital, with white racial purity secondary. Ehrenreich-Risner argues that the system disrupted the Brownlee tradition of guardianship for commissioners and the tradition of reciprocity for ubukhosi. Bantu Authorities ends by examining the lingering consequences of rural apartheid and asks what rural Africans have gained with majority rule when they remain bound to BA structures.

Book State Resistance and Change in South Africa

Download or read book State Resistance and Change in South Africa written by Philip Frankel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book describes and analyses the factors that were operative in South Africa during the 1980s, at a time when Apartheid was under intense pressure. It focuses not only on the central arenas of political action, but also on the non-institutional arenas which were increasingly the central forums of political action. Organised around the three linked themes of state action, popular opposition and possible alternatives, the work examines the manner in which such key institutions such as government, business and the military responded to Apartheid in its crisis as well as the role of the ANC, the black trade unions, Inkatha and community movements in the townships. The final section deals with the South African left and the Freedom Charter.

Download or read book Political Economy and Identities in KwaZulu Natal written by Robert Morrell and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent past the region now known as KwaZulu-Natal has developed a reputation for violent political contestation. A century ago, it was the Zulu who were considered to be the example of a martial race, par excellence. This book examines two hundred years of the region's history and develops an analysis of the region which goes beyond images of war and violence. The people of the region are situated within its political economy. The authors show how important social, political and economic distinctions emerged and how these shaped the identities of the region's inhabitants.
