Book Kuwait and the Gulf

Download or read book Kuwait and the Gulf written by Hassan Ali Al-Ebraheem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major result of the Second World War was the emergence of small states which vastly increased the membership of the international system. While a number of small states existed before the war many of these had made no effort to participate actively in the system; since then, the doctrine of equality of states has been established, in theory at least, through their admission to the UN. This book, first published in 1984, deals with the factors which have contributed to the emergence of such a large number of small states, the difficulties which they have experienced in achieving statehood, and their struggle to gain political integration. A precise analysis of the foreign policy and economic factors governing the activity of small states, particularly that of Kuwait and the other Gulf states, is presented here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many the story of this small Arabian state begins and ends with the wealth that has accrued from its vast oil deposits. But the real fascination of Kuwait lies in its geological and archaeological history; in its long struggle for survival among powerful neighbours; in its ambitious plans for industrial and economic development. This book, first published in 1972, shows the effects of the new material wealth opened up by oil in relation to the country’s remote past and its Islamic background.

Book Kuwait and Al Sabah

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rivka Azoulay
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-07-23
  • ISBN : 1838605061
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Kuwait and Al Sabah written by Rivka Azoulay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emirate of Kuwait hardly resembles the city-State it was at the start of the 20th century. The discovery of oil in 1938 rapidly transformed the tiny tribal sheikhdom of the Al-Sabah into a modern oil-producing state where, by the early 1980s, citizens were enjoying one of the highest standards of living in the world. While much has been written on the reasons why and how the Al-Sabah became a ruling dynasty, little is known about the nature of their authority and its relationship to Kuwait's social structure. Rivka Azoulay shows how despite the rapidity of change in the oil-rich, family-run emirate, it is the pre-oil dynamics of social and political life that dictate how society operates. The author shows that Kuwait's ambitious diversification plans to reduce oil-dependence by 2035 require a renegotiation of the regime's pact with society, which threatens the pre-oil alliances upon which the Al-Sabah's regime has been built.

Book excerpt: This is a portrait of Kuwait and its people, bringing together the Western view and the Kuwaitis' view of themselves. Kuwait is the first oil-city state. In 30 years, the desert kingdom has grown from a backward and impoverished society into a radical and progressive state. Kuwait has retained its neutrality despite the presence of neighbours such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq. It has used its new-found wealth to achieve a social transformation and a programme of investment in its future. Peter Mansfield has been visiting Kuwait for 30 years and observing its transformation - the creation of its health service, its emergence as a financial centre and its efforts towards a parliamentary democracy. His study shows how Kuwait has brought itself and its institutions into the 20th century while preserving its traditional Islamic traditions. 1961 to 1967. His books include Nasser's Egypt, The Arabs and The New Arabians
