Book excerpt: Oscar G. Richard - a native of Sunshine, Louisiana -was not the usual World War II serviceman. After enlisting in the US Army Air Corps in 1942 and training diligently for many months, the B-17 bombardier spent only one week in combat. On his third and last mission - on January 14, 1944 - his plane was shot down over France and he was imprisoned by the Germans. Thus, like many in the Eighth Air Force in late 1943 and early 1944, he spent most of the war not in combat but in captivity. In this memoir, Richard describes his wartime experiences both before and after his capture, recounting the transformation of a fresh-faced recruit into a seasoned POW. Offering insight into the early days of soldier life, he chronicles his enlistment, the months he spent waiting on the home front for induction, and his training at various sites in the American West. He gives accounts of his bombing missions and relives his parachute escape from his doomed plane and his subsequent seizure. The book relates the path that most German-held POWs, or "kriegies", took after capture: from the front lines to solitary confinement and interrogation at Dulag Luft, through a long and uncertain journey through Germany, to the final destination - for Richard, Stalag Luft 1, near Barth on the Baltic coast.

Book Pathfinder Kriegie and Gumboot Governor

Download or read book Pathfinder Kriegie and Gumboot Governor written by Sir James Rowland and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A descendant of early pioneers of New South Wales, James Rowland combined a thirst for adventure with a strong sense of duty. Aged just 22, he became a Lancaster pilot in the elite Pathfinder force, flying 34 missions over occupied Europe and being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. In January 1945, he was the only survivor of a collision with a Canadian aircraft over Germany. After narrowly escaping being shot as a spy, he spent the rest of the war as a POW. Returning to the RAAF in 1947, Rowland was a test pilot during the early years of the supersonic era, and played a leading role in the Mirage procurement. His leadership qualities and technical expertise saw him become head of RAAF engineering in 1972, and, in a controversial appointment, Chief of the Air Staff in 1975, the first and still the only engineer to head the RAAF. In 1981, Rowland was appointed Governor of New South Wales, a position he held with distinction for eight years. A brilliant pilot and aeronautical engineer, who combined a strong commitment to duty with a great sense of fun, Rowland has a well-earned place among the great leaders of the RAAF.

Book Bomber Command Pilot From the Battle of Britain to the Augsburg Raid

Download or read book Bomber Command Pilot From the Battle of Britain to the Augsburg Raid written by Gerald Sherwood and published by Air World. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Sherwood was commissioned into the RAF as a pilot officer on leaving school in 1936. In mid-1940, he was posted to a frontline bomber squadron. He went on to undertake a full tour of thirty sorties against enemy targets during the summer of 1940, earning himself a Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in what has become known as the ‘Battle of the Barges’. Sherwood flew Manchesters on a further series of eventful bombing missions against the enemy, earning a Bar to the DFC in recognition of his determination and leadership. It was in the new Lancasters that Sherwood, by then a Squadron Leader, undertook his most daring mission. This was Operation Margin, the attack upon the M.A.N. diesel engine works at Augsburg in Bavaria on 17 April 1942. This involved a flight of some 600 miles in broad daylight with no fighter escort, flying at less than 250 feet in order to avoid enemy radar. The raid was led by both Sherwood and Squadron Leader John Nettleton. Sherwood was shot down during the raid and was duly posted as missing. Assumed dead for six weeks, he eventually surfaced as a prisoner of war in German hands at Stalag Luft III. Operation Margin was considered a success and both squadron leaders involved were recommended for the award of the Victoria Cross. Whilst Nettleton’s citation was approved, and the VC duly invested, Sherwood’s was amended by the Air Ministry to state: ‘To be recommended for DSO, if found to be alive.’ The DSO was gazetted on 30 June 1942. Whilst in captivity, Sherwood witnessed at first-hand the Wooden Horse escape, the infamous Great Escape, and, finally, the Long March across Germany in the last winter of the war in Europe. He was finally repatriated to the UK during Operation Exodus after the fall of the Third Reich in 1945. Written by his son, Bomber Command Pilot provides a fascinating insight into the development of Bomber Command into the powerful strike force that helped turn the tide of victory in the West.

Download or read book Hitler s Tenant written by William H. Harvey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of an eleventh generation “Yankee”, who joined the military during WWII. After completing high school Harv enlisted in the military only to find himself on his way to Europe to serve as a B24 combat navigator –bombardier in the 15th Air Force. On April 25, 1944 Harv was on a raid to Varese, Italy when the 450th bomb group formation got into the clouds and the plane, Maiden USA, was struck by a force of German ME-109’s. The Maiden USA suffered severe damage as the Luftwaffe continued to attack. A number of crew members lost their lives while others were injured and parachuted from the aircraft. The nineteen year old “Yank” found himself a POW in Hitler’s Third Reich at Stalag Luft III. He participated in two of the infamous camp evacuation marches that occurred near the end of the war. Harv relates his experiences as the youngest member of the camps and how he survived. The book gives the reader a vivid first hand portrayal of a young American’s fear and hope during his capture and confinement by the Germans. During the ordeal Harv was able to see the humor in a tough situation.

Book The Wild Blue Yonder and Beyond

Download or read book The Wild Blue Yonder and Beyond written by Ian Hawkins and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 95th Bomb Group (Heavy), the most highly decorated bomb group of World War II, participated in every major mission of the war in Europe from May 1943 through the warÆs end and was awarded an unprecedented three Presidential Unit Citations. Flying the celebrated B-17 Flying Fortress, the 95th was the first U.S. bomb group to bomb Berlinùa feat that put it on the centerfold of Life magazineùand the last group to lose a plane over Europe in World War II. Over six hundred men in the 95th never came home. The Wild Blue Yonder and Beyond is the first book to cover a World War II bomb group from its inception through the present day. Utilizing interviews with nearly a hundred air war veterans, dozens of unpublished crew memoirs, all the bomb groupÆs official mission reports from the National Archives, and nearly a hundred other sources, author Rob Morris (assisted by air war historian Ian Hawkins) provides a deep tactical and human understanding of the group. Also included are the stories of the veteransÆ wives and families, who fought a different kind of war at home, and the residents of Horham, whose tiny English village was suddenly on the warÆs front lines. Intensely human, exhaustively researched, and lovingly told, this book is certain to be a classic in the field and a resource for anyone interested in the workings of a World War II bomb group.
