Book Last Tape on Stage in Translation

Download or read book Last Tape on Stage in Translation written by Burç İdem Dinçel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Beckett’s theatrical works maintain a prominent position within contemporary theatre. His plays provide a prodigious potential to study several forms of acting, staging, and dramaturgy, as well as language and translation, thereby setting a fertile ground to tackle the problematic issue of the relationship between theatre criticism and theatre-translation criticism. That is precisely what this study examines by drawing attention to the fundamental characteristics of translated theatre texts as blueprints for productions and taking several aspects into account from directing to acting, from staging to performance, together with the language factor. To that end, Burç İdem Dinçel focuses on one of Beckett’s most significant plays, namely, Krapp’s Last Tape, situating it within the author’s oeuvre and along the way scrutinising not only the theatrical pieces but also the prose. By looking into the Turkish translations and productions of the play, this book brings forth a new dimension into approaching theatre through translation.

Book Krapp s Last Tape and Other Shorter Plays

Download or read book Krapp s Last Tape and Other Shorter Plays written by Samuel Beckett and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krapp's Last Tape was first performed by Patrick Magee at the Royal Court Theatre in October 1958, and described as 'a solo, if that is the word, for one voice and two organs: one human, one mechanical. It fills few pages. It is perhaps the most original and important play of its length ever written.' (Roy Walker) The present volume brings together Krapp's Last Tape and Beckett's other shorter works or 'dramaticules' written for the stage. It will be complemented by a forthcoming Faber edition of dramatic works written for radio and screen. Arranged in chronological order of composition, these shorter plays exhibit the laconic means and compassionate ends of Beckett's dramatic vision. KRAPP 'Here I end this reel. Box - [ Pause.] - three, spool - [ Pause.] - five. [ Pause.] Perhaps my best years have gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back. [ Staring motionless before him.]

Book Krapp s Last Tape Theatrical Notebooks

Download or read book Krapp s Last Tape Theatrical Notebooks written by Samuel Beckett and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The publication of Samuel Beckett's Theatrical Notebooks . . . is a major event which casts fascinating light on the thought processes of a great writer."--Review of English Studies From the mid-1960s, Samuel Beckett himself directed all his major plays in Berlin, Paris, or London. For most of these productions he meticulously prepared notebooks for his personal use. The Theatrical Notebooks of Beckett that are reproduced in facsimile here are translated and annotated and thus offer a remarkable record of his own involvement with the staging of his texts. They present his solutions to practical problems but also provide a unique insight into the ways he envisaged his plays. With additional information taken from Beckett's own annotated and corrected copies, the editors have been able to constitute a new revised text for each of the major plays. Beckett directed Krapp's Last Tape on four separate occasions: this volume offers a facsimile of his 1969 Schiller Theater notebook, which contains some of the most explicit analysis by the playwright of his own work ever revealed. The revised text incorporates many of the changes he made in the 1969 Schiller production, as well as subsequent changes in later productions. It reveals a flexibility and openness of approach often considered alien to Beckett's ways of working in the theatre.

Book Krapp s Last Tape and Other Dramatic Pieces

Download or read book Krapp s Last Tape and Other Dramatic Pieces written by Samuel Beckett and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-06-16 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett’s dramatic pieces includes a short stage play, two radio plays, and two pantomimes. The stage play Krapp’s Last Tape evolves a shattering drama out of a monologue of a man who, at age sixty-nine, plays back the autobiographical tape he recorded on his thirty-ninth birthday. The two radio plays were commissioned by the BBC; All That Fall “plumbs the same pessimistic depths [as Waiting for Godot] in what seems a no less despairing search for human dignity” (London Times), and Embers is equally unforgettable theater, born of the ramblings of an old man and his wife. Finally, in the two pantomimes, Beckett takes drama to the point of pure abstraction with his portrayals of, in Act Without Words I, frustrated desired, and in Act Without Words I, corresponding motions of living juxtaposed in the slow despair of one man and the senselessly busy motion of another.

Book Samuel Beckett and Cinema

Download or read book Samuel Beckett and Cinema written by Anthony Paraskeva and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1936, Samuel Beckett wrote a letter to the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein expressing a desire to work in the lost tradition of silent film. The production of Beckett's Film in 1964, on the cusp of his work as a director for stage and screen, coincides with a widespread revival of silent film in the period of cinema's modernist second wave. Drawing on recently published letters, archival material and production notebooks, Samuel Beckett and Cinema is the first book to examine comprehensively the full extent of Beckett's engagement with cinema and its influence on his work for stage and screen. The book situates Beckett within the context of first and second wave modernist filmmaking, including the work of figures such as Vertov, Keaton, Lang, Epstein, Flaherty, Dreyer, Godard, Bresson, Resnais, Duras, Rogosin and Hitchcock. By examining the parallels between Beckett's methods, as a writer-director, and particular techniques, such as the embodied presence of the camera, the use of asynchronous sound, and the cross-pollination of theatricality and cinema, as well as the connections between his collaborators and the nouvelle vague, the book reveals how Beckett's aesthetic is fundamentally altered by his work for the screen, and his formative encounters with modernist film culture.
