Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Bible : Old and New Testaments (King James Version) This book include History of King James Bible and their work. The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611. First printed by the King's Printer Robert Barker, this was the third translation into English to be approved by the English Church authorities. The first was the Great Bible commissioned in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishops' Bible of 1568. In January 1604, King James I convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England. James gave the translators instructions intended to guarantee that the new version would conform to the ecclesiology and reflect the episcopal structure of the Church of England and its belief in an ordained clergy. The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England. In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text, while the Apocrypha were translated from the Greek and Latin. In the Book of Common Prayer (1662), the text of the Authorized Version replaced the text of the Great Bible – for Epistle and Gospel readings – and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament. By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version was effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English speaking scholars. Today, the most used edition of the King James Bible, and often identified as plainly the King James Version, especially in the United States, closely follows the standard text of 1769, edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford.

Book Translations in Korea

Download or read book Translations in Korea written by Wook-Dong Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores practical and theoretical approaches to translation in Korea from the 16th century onwards, examining a variety of translations done in Korea from a diachronic perspective. Offering a discussion of the methodology for translating the Xiaoxue (Lesser or Elementary Learning), a primary textbook for Confucianism in China and other East Asian countries, the book considers the problems involving Korean Bible translation in general and the Term Question in particular. It examines James Scarth Gale, an early Canadian Protestant missionary to Korea, as one of the language’s remarkable translators. The book additionally compares three English versions of the Korean Declaration of Independence of 1919, arguing that the significant differences between them are due both to the translators’ political vision for an independent Korea as well as to their careers and Weltanschauungen. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of Deborah Smith’s English translation of ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang, which won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Korea

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Korea written by Won W. Lee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Korean Christianity is renowned for its rapid growth and conservative theological orientation. This phenomenon is inextricably tied to Korean appropriation of the Bible in their religio-cultural and socio-political context since the 18th century. Less understood, however, is the complex tapestry of Korean biblical interpretation that emerged from being missionized, colonized, internally divided, and incorporated into global norms. These countervailing forces proffer a distinctive Korean-ness of biblical interpretation. On the one hand, it tracks closely the influence of conservative western missionaries. On the other hand, it reflects God's liberating intervention for Koreans and the Korean diaspora. Both of these movements respond to and move beyond distinct histories of oppression. This introduction coheres twenty-four papers by grouping them into four waves of reciprocal interpretive encounters shaping Korean appropriation of the Bible and Christian practices. While some conservatively align with received western orthodoxy, others embrace a sense of complementarity that informs the spectrum of Korean Christian thought and practice, the long-standing religious traditions of Korea, the diversity of Korea's global diaspora, and the learning of non-Koreans who are attentive to the impact of the Bible in Korea"--

Download or read book The Gospel and Theology written by Young Namkoong and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart of Christianity had shifted from the Resurrection of Jesus to the Death of Jesus in the fourth century. That's why we preach the Resurrection of Jesus only once a year as a special sermon while meditating, singing, preaching, and teaching about the Passion of Jesus so often. The Crucifixion of Jesus proves nothing. However, the Resurrection of Jesus proves everything about who Jesus is. The Resurrection proves that Jesus is the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, Yehowah God, who was born as a Child and given as a Son (Isaiah 9:6). The Resurrection proves that Jesus is who He claims to be. He is the Resurrection and the Life. He is the Root and the Offspring of David. Paul, in 2 Corinthians 13:5, urges to test ourselves whether we are in "the Faith" and to prove ourselves. Otherwise, we are reprobates. To check whether you are in "the Faith," first, you must know what "the Faith" is. In this book, you will discover the difference between "other gospels" and "the Gospel," and "faith" and "the Faith."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the extraordinary growth of Christianity in the global south has come the rise of "reverse missions," in which countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America send missionaries to re-evangelize the West. In The Spirit Moves West, Rebecca Kim uses South Korea as a case study of how non-Western missionaries target Americans, particularly white Americans. She draws on four years of interviews, participant observation, and surveys of South Korea's largest non-denominational missionary-sending agency, University Bible Fellowship, in order to provide an inside look at this growing phenomenon. Known as the "Asian Protestant Superpower," South Korea is second only to the United States in the number of missionaries it sends abroad: approximately 22,000 in over 160 countries. Conducting her research both in the US and in South Korea, Kim studies the motivations and methods of these Korean evangelicals who have, since the 1970s, sought to "bring the gospel back" to America. By offering the first empirically-grounded examination of this much-discussed phenomenon, Kim explores what non-Western missions will mean to the future of Christianity in America and around the world.
