Book excerpt: An unflinching portrayal of the Korean immigrant experience from an extraordinary new talent in fiction. Spanning Korea and the United States, from the postwar era to contemporary times, Krys Lee's stunning fiction debut, Drifting House, illuminates a people torn between the traumas of their collective past and the indignities and sorrows of their present. In the title story, children escaping famine in North Korea are forced to make unthinkable sacrifices to survive. The tales set in America reveal the immigrants' unmoored existence, playing out in cramped apartments and Koreatown strip malls. A makeshift family is fractured when a shaman from the old country moves in next door. An abandoned wife enters into a fake marriage in order to find her kidnapped daughter. In the tradition of Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker and Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, Drifting House is an unforgettable work by a gifted new writer.

Book Regulating Gas Liberalization

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anton Ming-Zhi Gao
  • Publisher : Kluwer Law International B.V.
  • Release : 2010-10-20
  • ISBN : 9041142444
  • Pages : 466 pages

Download or read book Regulating Gas Liberalization written by Anton Ming-Zhi Gao and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to analyze, in a comparative way, the detailed development of the unbundling and open access regimes across three continents. It is the author’s contention that these two legal forms should be more widely implemented than they are at present. In each of five substantial chapters – on the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan – the author first focuses on the proposed or current laws and industrial practices on service, account, functional, legal and ownership unbundling and independent system operator, and then on those of different open access regimes (mainly including regulated and negotiated third party access), insofar as they have been developed in each location. Using empirical evidence from Europe, the United States, and Japan that a well-formulated and comprehensive liberalization can bring about more advantages than disadvantages, he shows how well-designed unbundling and open access regimes may accomplish the following: • inject much-needed competition into gas exploration, exploitation, import, production, and retailing; • reform and re-regulate non-competitive sectors such as transportation, distribution, and storage; • balance potential conflicts between energy security and competition; and • support interests such as environmental protection, energy rights, safety, and consumer protection.

Book The Korean Peace Process and the Four Powers

Download or read book The Korean Peace Process and the Four Powers written by Tae-Hwan Kwak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. After the inter-Korean Summit in 2000, the Korean peace process gained a new momentum and the two Koreas increased mutual contacts and exchanges. However, in 2001 the peace process stalled and was further hindered by Bush's hard-line policy towards Pyongyang and North Korea's inflexible attitudes towards Seoul. Interest in the Korean peninsula by the US, Russia, Japan and China, for geo-strategic and geo-economic reasons means that peace and unification will inevitably become an international problem. Against this backdrop, this original volume deals with the problems and prospects of the inter-Korean peace process and the interests, attitudes and policies of these major powers.

Book Handbook of Asian Aging

Download or read book Handbook of Asian Aging written by Hyunsook Yoon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In western countries, the rising tide of population aging took 100 years to alter the face of societies, but Asia is experiencing comparable changes in not much more than a quarter of a century. Contributors to "The Handbook of Aging" describe the magnitude of these changes and their effects on the aged and on societies attempting to adapt to the dramatic improvements in life expectancy brought on by rapid economic and social transformations. Asia encompasses a vast reach from Pakistan and India to Japan, the Philippines, and Indonesia, and in this book including Australia. "The Handbook of Aging" provides a framework for making sense of the meeting between reverential views of the elderly and contemporary priorities as Asia arrives at the crossroads. The need for innovative approaches to social policy and personal practices is nowhere more evident than in Asian countries, where modern marketing economies have forced hard political choices. The economic tigers of the Asian-Pacific region experienced the aging of their populations ahead of other Asian countries, but solutions reached during times of financial boom are being re-examined as economies come back to earth, with soft or hard landings. "The Handbook of Asian Aging" provides an atlas of the far-reaching changes that are afoot and that will become even more pronounced in the near future.

This fully revised and expanded second edition draws on interviews and conversations with American, North and South Korean, Chinese and other countries’ policy-makers and experts and North Korean official media stories. It has been updated to include discussion of the post-2012 period when Kim Jong-un replaced his father to become the leader of North Korea, and provides detailed analysis of both presidencies, concluding with a study of the two bilateral summits held with President Donald Trump. Book The Survival of North Korea

Download or read book The Survival of North Korea written by Suk Hi Kim, and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. How has North Korea been able to survive, and how long can it last without significant change to its economic and political structures? How can we peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff through constructive dialogue? This book examines North Korea's survival strategy and offers practical solutions to a 50-year nuclear standoff through a series of essays written by 15 of the world's foremost scholars and leading experts on strategy, economics and international relations. It is essential reading for anyone interested in peace in Northeast Asia and will be invaluable in helping policy-makers, diplomats, politicians, researchers and other North Korea watchers to understand three closely related issues about North Korea: (1) why North Korea will continue to survive; (2) how the United States and North Korea can build a mutual confidence; and (3) why a dialogue is the only viable way to resolve the North Korea problem peacefully.
