Download or read book Koos Breukel written by Koos Breukel and published by Veenman Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This slightly oversized volume is composed of 55 powerful black-and-white portraits by the Dutch photographer Koos Breukel, all of internationally renowned photographers like Richard Avedon, Robert Frank and Rineke Dijkstra--alongside a major work, in color or black-and-white, by each of the artists who were photographed. Thus Dennis Hopper's portrait is followed by a double-page spread of a biker couple, and Hellen van Meene's is preceded by a beautiful, adolescent redhead wearing a too-large camisole--looking over her shoulder and bathed in Vermeer-ish light. Made over the course of 15 years, this series collects all of Breukel's greatest heroes, who willingly sat for his 8 x 10 camera. Other featured artists include Ron Galella, Teun Hocks, Inez van Lamsweerde, Daido Moriyama, Arno Nollen, the Starn twins and a veritable who's who of Dutch twentieth-century photography.

Book excerpt: Is it real? What do I remember? How can you tell a story? Can lying be OK? What goes where? Why is it famous? What makes it problematic? Who do you think you are? Stealing or borrowing? Public or private? These ten questions launch a thought-provoking investigation into what is really going on when you look at a photograph. Peeling back the layers of everything from the earliest daguerreotypes to your latest selfie, you will discover where to find meaning in an image, and the ways in which the photographer, our current culture, and you yourself all collaborate in the creation of that meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of the metro line under the city of Amsterdam between 2003 and 2012 provided an excellent opportunity to investigate the past by organizing archaeological excavations. The department Monuments & Archaeology of the city of Amsterdam have been working on this since the start of construction in 2003. The main archaeological sites were situated on the Damrak and the Rokin. These excavations were very deep, as far as 25 m below ground, at which depth the layers of soil dated from the last Ice Age, 10,000 years ago. On top of these old layers the archaeologists found the riverbed of the Amstel which still runs through the city. The riverbed extended to a depth of 12 meter and was full of archaeological finds. In the old days people often dumped their refuse in the water. Also objects fell in the river by accident and sunk into the muddy river bed. The archaeological excavations produced almost 700,000 finds. Stuff gathers the archaeological finds from the riverbed into a material history of the city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museums, Sexuality, and Gender Activism examines the role of exhibitionary institutions in representing LGBTQ+ people, cisgender women, and nonbinary individuals. Considering recent gender and sexuality-related developments through a critical lens, the volume contributes significantly to the growing body of activist writing on this topic. Building on Gender, Sexuality and Museums and featuring work from established voices, as well as newcomers, this volume offers risky and exciting articles from around the world. Chapters cover diverse topics, including transgender representation, erasure, and activism; two-spirit people, indigeneity, and museums; third genders; gender and sexuality in heritage sites and historic homes; temporary exhibitions on gender and sexuality; museum representations of HIV/AIDS; interventions to increase queer visibility and inclusion in galleries; LGBTQ+ staff alliances; and museums, gender ambiguity, and the disruption of binaries. Several chapters focus on areas outside the US and Europe, while others explore central topics through the perspectives of racial and ethnic minorities. Containing contributions that engage in sustained critique of current policies, theory, and practice, Museums, Sexuality, and Gender Activism is essential reading for those studying museums, women and gender, sexuality, culture, history, heritage, art, media, and anthropology. The book will also spark interest among museum practitioners, public archivists, and scholars researching related topics.
