Book Political Economy of Globalization Financialization Crises

Download or read book Political Economy of Globalization Financialization Crises written by Mehak Anjum Siddiquei and published by IJOPEC Publications. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is a collection of selected papers, presented at the International Conference of Political Economy (ICOPEC 2016). The deliberate employment of the term “political economy” in the title “International Conference of Political Economy” implies the fact that economics is perceived as an integral part of social phenomena in the International Conference of Political Economy (ICOPEC). Accordingly, even if economic institutions and relations form the foundations of society in the contemporary world, economic development is dependent on social power and dynamics, while economic policies, per se, are shaped by not only technical processes but also diverse interests and choices. Within this context, politics is involved in every encounter between different economic classes, social groups and genders being shaped by the visions of a better life as the subject matter of philosophy, ethics and religion and at times it finds its best expression in art. Law, on the other hand, is the embodiment of all social relations which are, in their essence, political. Thus, this conference does not reduce society to market relations only, despite positioning the economy in the heart of social relations. Above all, it considers the society as a political entity. Indeed, everything constitutes the subject matter of politics. The arguments in favour of purifying market relations from the influence of politics and the discourse that they take place on their own right serve to disguise the conflicts of interest and power asymmetries inherent therein. This conference regards man as homo politicus, as Aristoteles put it, rather than homo economicus. In 2016, ICOPEC conferences were turned into a conference series with its 7th conference and the main theme of the 7th conference was determined as “State, Economic Policy, Taxation and Development". IJOPEC Publication has undertaken to publish selected papers, presented at this conference in English and Turkish, in five different edited books. In the 90s the phenomena of globalization managed to dominate political, popular, and academic debates. While reading a newspaper or a book, watching television, surfing the Internet, or participating in a demonstration we come across the links of globalization in our everyday lives. Globalization as a wide term is variously blamed or credited with a huge range of negative effects, e. g. it is often related to social problems ranging from famine to floods, from pollution to poverty, and from rural depopulation to urban overcrowding. On the contrary, globalization can be also considered as the source of success in development, for instance decrease in the poverty levels, economic prosperity and growth, better services, and enhanced awareness of human rights. Nevertheless, some sceptics of the benefits from globalization have also described the potential ways in transforming political, economic, and social relations within and between countries. This transformation may lead to the benefit of human welfare worldwide. T İsmail Şiriner, Bryan Christiansen, Julia Dobreva (Introduction: Political Economy of Globalization: Financialization & Crises) 10 Since the 80s, we can observe a significant increase in the role of the financial sector. This progress is often referred to as financialization. Financialization has many features and affects numerous different economic entities (Epstein 2015; Stockhammer 2013). One key component is the magnificent growth of the financial sector. Greenwood & Scharfstein (2013) point out a massive rise of the financial service sector in the USA during the last 30 years. The growth can be proved either by the financial sector’s share in GDP, the quantity of financial assets, or by employment and average wages in the financial sector. But this growth is not related to the USA; although to a softer scope, similar processes can also be observed in other OECD countries (Philippon & Reshel 2013). The financial rise has its base in the deregulation and liberalization of the financial (and economic) system. From this point of view, financialization is the cause rather than the effect. This is the major difference compared to the other approaches. Financialization can affect the macro-economy through four main channels. These are income distribution, investment in capital stock, household debt, and net exports and current account balances. As a correction, it is discussed that economic structures governed by financialization should be addressed on four dimensions: a) re-regulation and reduction of the financial sector, b) redistribution of income from top to bottom and from capital to labour, c) re-orientation of macroeconomic policies to stabilize domestic demand at non-inflationary full employment levels, and eventually d) re-creation of international monetary and economic policy coordination.

Book Seapower

  • Author : Geoffrey Till
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • Pages : 622 pages

Download or read book Seapower written by Geoffrey Till and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth, revised and updated, edition of Geoffrey Till's Seapower: A Guide for the Twenty-first Century. The rise of the Chinese and other Asian navies, worsening quarrels over maritime jurisdiction and the United States’ maritime pivot towards the Asia-Pacific region reminds us that the sea has always been central to human development as a source of resources, and as a means of transportation, information-exchange and strategic dominion. It has provided the basis for mankind's prosperity and security, and this is even more true in the early twenty-first century, with the emergence of an increasingly globalised world trading system. Navies have always provided a way of policing, and sometimes exploiting, the system. In contemporary conditions, navies, and other forms of maritime power, are having to adapt, in order to exert the maximum power ashore in the company of others and to expand the range of their interests, activities and responsibilities. While these new tasks are developing fast, traditional ones still predominate. Deterrence remains the first duty of today’s navies, backed up by the need to ‘fight and win’ if necessary. How navies and their states balance these two imperatives will tell us a great deal about our future in this increasingly maritime century. This book investigates the consequences of all this for the developing nature, composition and functions of all the world's significant navies, and provides a guide for anyone interested in the changing and crucial role of seapower in the twenty-first century. Seapower is essential reading for all students of naval power, maritime security and naval history, and highly recommended for students of strategic studies, international security and international relations.

Book Universities in the Knowledge Society

Download or read book Universities in the Knowledge Society written by Timo Aarrevaara and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Springer is proud to announce that 'Universities in the Knowledge Society' has received the ASHE-CIHE award for Significant Research on International Higher Education. Congratulations to Timo Aarrevaara, Martin Finkelstein, Glen A. Jones, Jisun Jung and all contributors! This book explores the complex, multi-faceted relationships between national research and innovation systems and higher education. The transition towards knowledge societies/economies is repositioning the role of the university and transforming the academic profession. The volume provides a foundational introduction to the concepts of knowledge society and knowledge economy, and these concepts ground the detailed case studies of eighteen systems, located across five continents. Each case study was written by a leading expert in that jurisdiction, and provides a critical analysis of the research and development infrastructure, the role of universities, and the implications for the academic profession. The book describes how nations in various geographic regions and at various stages of economic maturity are restructuring their university systems to adapt to the new imperatives, and provides a cross-case analysis identifying common themes and distinctive features. In telling the story of higher education’s on-going global metamorphosis, the contributing authors place current developments in the context of the university’s historic evolution, survey the changing metrics that national governments are adopting to measure university performance, and describe a new international project, the Academic Profession in the Knowledge-based Society [APiKS] that involved a common survey of academics in more than twenty countries to take the pulse of developments “on the ground” while documenting the challenges confronting knowledge workers in the new economy.

Book The United States and Military Coups in Turkey and Pakistan

Download or read book The United States and Military Coups in Turkey and Pakistan written by Ömer Aslan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative study explores the involvement of the United States in four successful military coups in Turkey and Pakistan during the Cold War. Focusing on military-to-military relations with the US in each country, the book offers insight into how external actors can impact the outcomes of coups, particularly through socialization via military training, education, and international organizations such as NATO. Drawing upon recently declassified government documents and a trove of unexplored interviews with high-ranking officials, Ömer Aslan also examines how coup plotters in both countries approached the issue of US reaction before, during, and after their coups. As armed forces have continued to make and unmake Turkish and Pakistani governments well into the twenty-first century, this volume offers original, probing analysis of the circumstances which make coups possible.

This book was released on 2017-04-14 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of globalization can be described as a gradual increase in the process and dependency level that combines people, society and countries from different economic, social and political aspects of the world. Development, which is a multidimensional concept such as globalization, is a concept that includes human values as well as economic, social, cultural, demographic and political dimensions. With the globalization process, a turn to use knowledge as a factor of production has been passed, and investing in people who use knowledge in production has become important. Investment in human capital leads to the importance of development concept. The relationship of the development process with the different fields pioneered the preparation of scientific works in the context of globalization and regional studies. In this book "Economic Development: Global and Regional Studies", there are academicians who work in different universities of Turkey and the World and work in the field of development. The scientific ethics and responsibility of the works in the book belong to the authors / writers who own the department, of course, and we believe that the necessary sensitivity is shown in this issue. This book in your hand is made up of 15 chapters, and development in each chapter is analyzed from different angles. We believe that the detailed content will contribute to economic development literature. We would like to thank all the authors whose paper published on this book. Our hope is to provide some ideas which can inspire academicians and students not only to understand different problems that the world is facing, but some solution as well.

This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics, the subfield of physics that describes the behavior of very small (quantum) particles, provides the basis for a new paradigm of computing. First proposed in the 1980s as a way to improve computational modeling of quantum systems, the field of quantum computing has recently garnered significant attention due to progress in building small-scale devices. However, significant technical advances will be required before a large-scale, practical quantum computer can be achieved. Quantum Computing: Progress and Prospects provides an introduction to the field, including the unique characteristics and constraints of the technology, and assesses the feasibility and implications of creating a functional quantum computer capable of addressing real-world problems. This report considers hardware and software requirements, quantum algorithms, drivers of advances in quantum computing and quantum devices, benchmarks associated with relevant use cases, the time and resources required, and how to assess the probability of success.

Book The Handbook of Experimental Economics

Download or read book The Handbook of Experimental Economics written by John H. Kagel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which comprises eight chapters, presents a comprehensive critical survey of the results and methods of laboratory experiments in economics. The first chapter provides an introduction to experimental economics as a whole, with the remaining chapters providing surveys by leading practitioners in areas of economics that have seen a concentration of experiments: public goods, coordination problems, bargaining, industrial organization, asset markets, auctions, and individual decision making. The work aims both to help specialists set an agenda for future research and to provide nonspecialists with a critical review of work completed to date. Its focus is on elucidating the role of experimental studies as a progressive research tool so that wherever possible, emphasis is on series of experiments that build on one another. The contributors to the volume--Colin Camerer, Charles A. Holt, John H. Kagel, John O. Ledyard, Jack Ochs, Alvin E. Roth, and Shyam Sunder--adopt a particular methodological point of view: the way to learn how to design and conduct experiments is to consider how good experiments grow organically out of the issues and hypotheses they are designed to investigate.
