Book excerpt: The influence of Kant’s understanding of morality is too strong to be ignored. Hegel, however, fundamentally criticized Kant for offering merely a ‘formal’ model of normativity that cannot sufficiently comprehend human action as free. Instead, Hegel argues in his doctrine of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) that the embeddedness of the acting subject must be taken into account when identifying normativity. Yet the issue of normativity in Kant and Hegel remains contested even today, not least due to the misunderstandings of their conceptions of the topic. The present volume explores developments within recent scholarship which enable a better understanding of the concept of normativity in the thought of Kant and Hegel.

Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between representations of the body and narrative strategies in the work of three contemporary women writers from the former Eastern Bloc countries: Herta Müller, an ethnic German from Romania; Libuše Moníková, who emigrated from Czechoslovakia to West Germany and chose to write in German; and Kerstin Hensel, from the GDR. Marven shows how the content and form of their works are interlinked, and how these challenge the hegemonic discourses within repressive socialist regimes. The introduction contextualizes the writers' socially, culturally, and historically, and outlines the theoretical basis of the approach, drawing on psychoanalysis, performativity theory, and feminist critical theory. Chapters on the individual authors offer new interpretations of the writers' works, focusing on the structures of trauma (in Müller's work), hysteria (in Moníková's) and the grotesque (in Hensel's). The images of the body analysed in the first half of each chapter show the effects of violence; challenge the understanding of the body as natural or authentic; and raise questions about identity and gender. The analysis in the second half of each chapter covers a range of formal features, from the fantastic and collage, through parody and intertextuality, to irony, plot, and story telling. The book also traces developments in the work of all three authors, taking account of the historical changes in the Eastern Bloc countries since 1989. Body and Narrative in Contemporary Literatures in German will be valuable for anyone researching contemporary German literatures, as well as those interested in feminist theory, minority literatures, and trauma.

Die vorgeschlagenen Interpretationen erweisen die Argonautica als Gedicht, das eine positive Bewertung der Herrschaft Vespasians nahelegt, aber in ambivalenter Weise offenlässt, ob das flavische Rom eher einer unbegrenzten Friedenszeit oder einem weiteren Bürgerkrieg entgegensteuert. Written in the aftermath of Nero’s downfall, the Year of the Four Emperors and the rise of Vespasian, Valerius Flaccus’ Argonautica departs significantly from earlier treatments of the Argonautic myth. This monograph explores how the epic’s fusion of foreign conquest with civil war, its depiction of rulers and tyrants, and its disconcerting portrayal of the gods may have resonated with its contemporary audience. The proposed readings suggest that the poem reflects approval of Vespasian’s rule, yet ambiguously leaves open the question of whether the future of Flavian Rome will hold everlasting peace or another civil war.

Book excerpt: This work aims to contribute to our understanding of the effects of noise and non-uniform interactions in populations of oscillatory units. In particular, we explore the collective dynamics in various extensions of the Kuramoto model. We develop a theoretical framework to study such noisy systems and we show through many examples that indeed new insights can be gained with our method. The first step is to coarse-grain the complex networks. The oscillatory units are then characterized solely by their individual quantities, so that identical units can be grouped together. The second step consists of the ansatz that in all these groups the distributions of the oscillators' phases follow time-dependent Gaussians. We apply this analytical two-step method to oscillator networks with correlations between coupling strengths and natural frequencies, to populations with mixed positive and negative coupling strengths, and to noise-driven active rotators, which can perform excitable dynamics. We calculate the rich phase diagrams that delineate the emergent rhythms. Extensive numerical simulations are performed to show both the validity and the limitations of our theoretical results.
