Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Genealogical History of the Kolb, Kulp or Culp Family, and Its Branches in America: With Biographical Sketches of Their Descendants From the Earliest Available Records From 1707 to the Present Time, Including Dielman Kolb in Germany, With Portraits and Other Illustrations Consequently during the last few years he collected such facts and data as were accessible. It was the original imten tion to prepare a history of his own branch of the family only, but having been deeply interested in the work himself, he also naturally awakened a like interest in individuals of the other branches; it Was then decided to make the history a general one by collecting and introducing all facts that could be so arranged without making the work too expensive and voluminous. The actual work, however, of compiling this history was not begun until about A. D. 1879. The task, an arduous one, was undertaken none too soon. It. Should have been begun years ago, while there were yet living those of the third generation, who could have given more satisfactory information of the early ancestors that would be of great interest and value to the work, but which with their demise is forever lost; Already the ancestral thread was lost to many who were unable to trace their lineage farther than to the grandfather or were totally unaware of the fact that they were in any way connected with the Kolb family. Book Luther s Wittenberg World

Download or read book Luther s Wittenberg World written by Robert Kolb and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In conversations about the Reformation, the name Martin Luther towers above all others. And rightly so. His work, vision, and writings set Christianity on a course of events that would forever change the way that most believers live and understand their faith. And yet, the Reformation was far more than Martin Luther. Around Luther were hundreds of people - fellow teachers and priests, politicians, artists, printers, and spouses - without whose activity and work the Reformation would have progressed much differently. These women and men make up Luther's Wittenberg world, and there is much to be learned from engaging their work. In this monumental work, Robert Kolb introduces us to those individuals. Engaging and informative essays on the social, political, and economic realities of the sixteenth century frame brief introductions to over two hundred supporting "cast members" whose lives played out around Martin Luther. Comprehensively illustrated, with maps, bibliographies, and other resources, Luther's Wittenberg World is a treasure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moral Wages offers the reader a vivid depiction of what it is like to work inside an agency that assists victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Based on over a year of fieldwork by a man in a setting many presume to be hostile to men, this ethnographic account is unlike most research on the topic of violence against women. Instead of focusing on the victims or perpetrators of abuse, Moral Wages focuses exclusively on the service providers in the middle. It shows how victim advocates and counselors—who don't enjoy extrinsic benefits like pay, power, and prestige—are sustained by a different kind of compensation. As long as they can overcome a number of workplace dilemmas, they earn a special type of emotional reward reserved for those who help others in need: moral wages. As their struggles mount, though, it becomes clear that their jobs often put them in impossible situations—requiring them to aid and feel for vulnerable clients, yet giving them few and feeble tools to combat a persistent social problem.

Book Learning First Technology Second

Download or read book Learning First Technology Second written by Liz Kolb and published by International Society for Technology in Education. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning First, Technology Second offers teachers a classroom-tested, easy-to-use framework to help them move from arbitrary uses of technology to thoughtful ways of adding value to student learning. Learning with technology doesn’t happen because a specific tool “revolutionizes” education. It happens when proven teaching strategies intersect with technology tools, and yet it’s not uncommon for teachers to use a tool because it’s “fun” or because the developer promises it will help students learn. This book includes: • An introduction to the Triple E Framework that helps teachers engage students in time-on-task learning, enhance learning experiences beyond traditional means and extend learning opportunities to bridge classroom learning with students’ everyday lives. • Effective strategies for using technology to create authentic learning experiences for their students. • Case studies to guide appropriate tech integration. • A lesson planning template to show teachers how to effectively frame technology choices and apply them in instruction. The companion jump start guide based on this book is Engage, Enhance, Extend: Start Creating Authentic Lessons With the Triple E Framework.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carolyn Kolb provides a delightful and detailed look into the heart of her city, New Orleans. She is a former Times-Picayune reporter and current columnist for New Orleans Magazine, where versions of these essays appeared as “Chronicles of Recent History.” Kolb takes her readers, both those who live in New Orleans and those who love it as visitors, on a virtual tour of her favorite people and places. Divided into sections on food, Mardi Gras, literature, and music, these short essays can be read in one gulp or devoured slowly over time. Either way, the reader will find a welcome companion and guide in Kolb. In bringing her stories up to date, Kolb's writings reflect an ongoing pattern of life in her fascinating city. Since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, some of these things remembered will never return. Some of the people whose stories Kolb tells are no longer with us. It is important to her, and to us, that they are not forgotten. Kolb, and her readers, can honor them by sharing and enjoying their stories. As Kolb says, “When things fail, when the lights go out and the roof caves in and the water rises, all that remains, ultimately, is the story.” This collection of such stories was made with love.
