Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book arose from a multi-disciplinary study which looked at the development of global-local manufacturing clusters in the context of a developing, Asian economy. The study demonstrates the connection amongst theoretical perspectives such as international business, development studies, economic geography, and organisational learning clusters/production networks through an in-depth case study of the Indonesian automotive cluster. The book gives a detailed account of two automotive clusters (Toyota and Honda) and their contribution to regional economic development in emerging economies in Asian region. The book builds on existing literature to develop a theoretical framework to shed light on the study's empirical findings. The book discusses practical implications for both the business community and policy makers. The discussion on global-local networks in an Asian context supplements existing literature and case studies in the field. This is one of the few books that explicitly links regional clusters to global networks. The book offers a refreshingly international (Asian) perspective to the literature on clusters and economic geography for emerging economies.

Book Inter Firm Knowledge Transfer to Malaysian Auto Industry

Download or read book Inter Firm Knowledge Transfer to Malaysian Auto Industry written by Sayed Samer Ali Al-Shami and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of Technology has become the most important source of countries developing in economic growth, competitiveness, wealth, power, prestige, and even independence. The current issue of technology transfer has risen dramatically in the past few years, primary associated with the knowledge transfer. Multinational Corporations (MNCs) in the developed countries are the main actors driving of technology and knowledge to developing countries. Thus the organizations in the developing countries are striving hard to create their internal environment that needed to build strong cooperation with MNCs through strategic alliance. The domestic retailers and infant industries in developing countries are suffering from the increasing challenging environment because of the rapid changes in consumer behavior and preferences, shorter product life cycle, increasingly saturated market, high rent, personnel and other operating costs. Therefore organizations in developing countries are confronted with two choices, both to surrender and withdraw from the global markets or seeking for support from successful Multinational Corporations that have advanced technology and sophisticated knowledge.

Book Industrial Competitiveness and Design Evolution

Download or read book Industrial Competitiveness and Design Evolution written by Takahiro Fujimoto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the concept of design into the existing framework of industrial performance, international trade and comparative advantage in trade and industrial phenomena, which increasingly have been affected by design characteristics of tradable goods. Design, capability and their evolution are introduced into current theories of trade to explain the reality of international trade in the early twenty-first century and the possibility of design-based comparative advantage is explored. Toward that end, the concepts of design, architecture, organizational capability and productivity are introduced, as are their interactions and evolution. The author starts from the fact that firms’ selection of design locations precedes that of production locations and that a new product’s initial production location is usually the same as its design location. In other words, design matters in explaining today’s trade phenomena. Thus, this book analyzes product design and its evolution in the context of the comparative advantage theory. The author argues that the concept of Ricardo’s comparative advantage must be reinterpreted in a more dynamic way than in the past, with changing labor input coefficients treated as variables and driven by international capability-building competition between factories. Some of the many topics dealt with in this volume include a capability-architecture view of industrial comparative advantage, a design-based view of manufacturing, the evolution of manufacturing capabilities, Ricardian comparative advantage with changing labor input coefficients, comparative design cost and selection of design locations and a design process model behind comparative design cost. In this way, the behaviors of factories, product development projects, firms, industries and national economies in today’s global competition are described and analyzed in the most realistic way.
