Book Leadership Being Knowing Doing

Download or read book Leadership Being Knowing Doing written by Stephen Tierney and published by John Catt. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly frenetic world too many leaders have lost sight of the simple yet profound wisdom associated with practical action, otherwise known as phronesis. Phronesis is an ancient Greek word associated with good judgement and good character. At its core, it is about the ability to discern how best to act. Practical wisdom involves acting thoughtfully and virtuously and encouraging others to do the same. Stephen Tierney describes virtue, thought and action – which coalesce in effective leadership – as the Way of Being, Way of Knowing and Way of Doing. Each of the three Ways consist of a number of elements termed the Basics. The Ways of Being: Purpose & Introspection The Ways of Knowing: Specialism & Strategy The Ways of Doing: Implementation, Networking, Guardianship & Expertise Structuring the book around these eight Basics, readers will be challenged and supported to explore each of the Basics from a theoretical perspective and then provided with real world examples of how they were applied by Stephen in his own career in educational leadership. In writing Leadership: Being, Knowing, Doing, Stephen seeks to help leaders explore their own capabilities and potential. Leadership can be learnt. The three Ways with their constituent Basics represent a mirror to help leaders reflect upon and improve their practice. In turn, current leaders are called upon to accept the responsibility to grow the leaders of the future.

Book Seeing Knowing and Doing

Download or read book Seeing Knowing and Doing written by Robert Audi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides an overall theory of perception and an account of knowledge and justification concerning the physical, the abstract, and the normative. It has the rigor appropriate for professionals but explains its main points using concrete examples. It accounts for two important aspects of perception on which philosophers have said too little: its relevance to a priori knowledge-traditionally conceived as independent of perception-and its role in human action. Overall, the book provides a full-scale account of perception, presents a theory of the a priori, and explains how perception guides action. It also clarifies the relation between action and practical reasoning; the notion of rational action; and the relation between propositional and practical knowledge. Part One develops a theory of perception as experiential, representational, and causally connected with its objects: as a discriminative response to its objects, embodying phenomenally distinctive elements, and yielding rich information that underlies human knowledge. Part Two presents a theory of self-evidence and the a priori. The theory is perceptualist in explicating the apprehension of a priori truths by articulating its parallels to perception. The theory unifies empirical and a priori knowledge by clarifying their reliable causal connections with their objects-connections many have thought impossible for a priori knowledge as about the abstract. Part Three explores how perception guides action; the relation between knowing how and knowing that; the nature of reasons for action; the role of inference in determining it; and the overall conditions for its rationality"--

Book excerpt: From one of the world’s leading neuroscientists: a succinct, illuminating, wholly engaging investigation of how biology, neuroscience, psychology, and artificial intelligence have given us the tools to unlock the mysteries of human consciousness “One thrilling insight after another ... Damasio has succeeded brilliantly in narrowing the gap between body and mind.” —The New York Times Book Review In recent decades, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have declared the problem of consciousness unsolvable, but Antonio Damasio is convinced that recent findings across multiple scientific disciplines have given us a way to understand consciousness and its significance for human life. In the forty-eight brief chapters of Feeling & Knowing, and in writing that remains faithful to our intuitive sense of what feeling and experiencing are about, Damasio helps us understand why being conscious is not the same as sensing, why nervous systems are essential for the development of feelings, and why feeling opens the way to consciousness writ large. He combines the latest discoveries in various sciences with philosophy and discusses his original research, which has transformed our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Here is an indispensable guide to understanding how we experience the world within and around us and find our place in the universe.

Book Knowing and Doing the Will of God

Download or read book Knowing and Doing the Will of God written by David Jones and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians rightly believe that within the pages of the Bible God reveals His moral will to His people. Indeed, by studying Scripture believers can learn to follow God's moral standards, which address a wide range of life issues. Yet, many Christians wrestle with the idea of knowing and doing what they believe to be a special individual will of God for their lives. As commonly understood, this individual will is related to subjects such as what school to attend, whom to marry, which church to join, what career path to pursue, what purchases to make, and a host of other similar issues. In this book author David W. Jones examines the important concept of the will of God and suggests that Scripture alone is sufficient for Christian life and practice. In the process of looking at God's will in Scripture this book helps readers to understand the meaning of major biblical passages that speak about God's will. Topics that are explored and explained in this clear volume include: the difference between true and false prophets, the practice of casting lots, the biblical use of the Urim and Thummim, the place of dreams and visions in the Christian life, the idea of angelic visitation, as well as the use of supernatural signs to know the will of God. Additionally, this text includes discussions about the place of prayer in decision making, the role of the Holy Spirit in revelation, and suggestions for how so-called weaker and stronger brethren can interact regarding issues of Christian liberty.

Book Why Knowing What To Do Is Not Enough

Download or read book Why Knowing What To Do Is Not Enough written by Anne-Greet Keizer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between "knowing" and "doing" in view of self-reliance, which is more and more often expected of citizens. In todays society, people are expected to take responsibility for their own lives and be self-reliant. This is no easy feat. They must be on constant high alert in areas of life such as health, work and personal finances and, if things threaten to go awry, take appropriate action without further ado. What does this mean for public policy? Policymakers tend to assume that the government only needs to provide people with clear information and that, once properly informed, they will automatically do the right thing. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that things do not work like that. Even though people know perfectly well what they ought to do, they often behave differently. Why is this? This book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between 'knowing and 'doing. It focuses on the role of non-cognitive capacities, such as setting goals, taking action, persevering and coping with setbacks, and shows how these capacities are undermined by adverse circumstances. By taking the latest psychological insights fully into account, this book presents a more realist perspective on self-reliance, and shows government officials how to design rules and institutions that allow for the natural limitations in peoples 'capacity to act.
