Book excerpt: While kinship is among the basic organizing principles of all human life, its role in and implications for international politics and relations have been subject to surprisingly little exploration in International Relations (IR) scholarship. This volume is the first volume aimed at thinking systematically about kinship in IR – as an organizing principle, as a source of political and social processes and outcomes, and as a practical and analytical category that not only reflects but also shapes politics and interaction on the international political arena. Contributors trace everyday uses of kinship terminology to explore the relevance of kinship in different political and cultural contexts and to look at interactions taking place above, at and within the state level. The book suggests that kinship can expand or limit actors’ political room for maneuvereon the international political arena, making some actions and practices appear possible and likely, and others less so. As an analytical category, kinship can help us categorize and understand relations between actors in the international arena. It presents itself as a ready-made classificatory system for understanding how entities within a hierarchy are organized in relation to one another, and how this logic is all at once natural and social.

Book excerpt: In the mid-seventeenth century, Wilno (Vilnius), the second capital of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was home to Poles, Lithuanians, Germans, Ruthenians, Jews, and Tatars, who worshiped in Catholic, Uniate, Orthodox, Calvinist, and Lutheran churches, one synagogue, and one mosque. Visitors regularly commented on the relatively peaceful coexistence of this bewildering array of peoples, languages, and faiths. In Kith, Kin, and Neighbors, David Frick shows how Wilno's inhabitants navigated and negotiated these differences in their public and private lives. This remarkable book opens with a walk through the streets of Wilno, offering a look over the royal quartermaster's shoulder as he made his survey of the city's intramural houses in preparation for King Wladyslaw IV's visit in 1636. These surveys (Lustrations) provide concise descriptions of each house within the city walls that, in concert with court and church records, enable Frick to accurately discern Wilno's neighborhoods and human networks, ascertain the extent to which such networks were bounded confessionally and culturally, determine when citizens crossed these boundaries, and conclude which kinds of cross-confessional constellations were more likely than others. These maps provide the backdrops against which the dramas of Wilno lives played out: birth, baptism, education, marriage, separation or divorce, guild membership, poor relief, and death and funeral practices. Book excerpt: Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. The act may be carried out by physical force, coercion, abuse of authority, or against a person who is incapable of giving valid consent, such as one who is unconscious, incapacitated, has an intellectual disability, or is below the legal age of consent. It is means of intimidation and control which function to perpetuate the subordinate status of women, and now, children in patriarch societies. In particular, an 11-year-old girl’s dead body was found in a waste bin with 80 wounds in Gujarat. Rape is an anti-social, cruel, heinous activity where protesters are mostly women by candle-light marches, slogan-raising in market squares. The participation of men are rarely seen, and this attitude is very unfortunate, irresponsible, highly atrocious committed against innocent girls. As per the Prime Minister of India, Rape is Rape; do not politicise it (said on Thursday 19th April 2018 during his London trip). Rape is the most heinous crime committed against women in India. According to the National Crime Report Bureau’s 2013 annual report, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012. Out of which 24,470 were committed by someone known to the victim. A total of 34,651 cases of rape were reported in India in 2015. Out of these, in 33,098 cases the offenders were known to the victims, revealed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. When rape is classified under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code, why the Government is not taking strict actions against the perpetrators? An amendment with mutatis mutandis having more specific punishments and the powers for the quick disposal of the cases should be enacted with immediate effect. In different parts of the world, the punishment for rape ranges from life imprisonment, death sentences to castration. But in India, the Government do not seem to take it as a serious crime. In many cases, political interference is the main cause of delay. "No culprit will be spared," the PM said amid anger over Kathua and Unnao Rape Cases. When the accused will be punished? Under the present practice, it will take many years to dispose of the case. However, I tried to create awareness among the future generation to save our daughters, sisters and women from this heinous crime.
