Download or read book Counseling Anarchists written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-03-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men who came to strangle me were shrinking my world like the most delicately tinted of bubbles, shrinking in ever narrowing circles from the upward gush of my own infancy. You've got to be crazy to see a psychiatrist. Don't call me if you're gnawing on a bad day, and all you want to do is have a discussion. We all marry our mirrors, someone who reflects how we feel about ourselves at the moment. Every wife is a mirror of her own husband's failures, and every husband a reflection of his wife's successes. If you want to make money, you find a void in society and fill it. With more than 60 percent of women being snuffed, it's no wonder a sharp promoter saturated the market with anarchists feeling their inadequacies. Their words fall like an embroidered saddle on a jackass. Remember when only female failures married when career success eluded them? Anarchists' dolls don't expand into motherhood. They're squeezed into silver plated girdles where the only private space is a purse.

Book Contemporary Armenian American Drama

Download or read book Contemporary Armenian American Drama written by Nishan Parlakian and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-19 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although ancestral voices have inspired many Armenian American writers of poetry and fiction in the twentieth century, their expression through drama has been limited. The first of its kind, this anthology is a collection of plays by notable Armenian Americans. Written in English largely by artists of Armenian extraction during the latter part of the twentieth century, the plays reflect the outrage of the Armenian Genocide, the forced transplantation that created the Armenian Diaspora, and the desire to maintain the newly established democratic homeland. Including a range of authors from William Saroyan to more contemporary voices, this anthology represents the writers that have stimulated cutting-edge contemporary drama from the mid-twentieth century to the present. The collection includes farce, comedy, tragicomedy, and tragedy (and sometimes blends of all of these). The plays reflect the shared experiences of Armenian family life in Armenia, Turkey, and America. The themes include the joy of freedom to practice their faith and ethnic customs, the turmoil of acculturation, and the feared loss of identity through assimilation. The editor has provided headnotes for each play and an extensive introduction tracing the history of Armenian American drama in the United States.

Book Is Radical Liberalism Or Extreme Conservatism a Character Disorder Mental Disease Or Publicity Campaign

Download or read book Is Radical Liberalism Or Extreme Conservatism a Character Disorder Mental Disease Or Publicity Campaign written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-04 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What can you tell me about myself, Dr. Lopez?" Sara asked. "You're doomed to remain idle. You're imprisoned in yourself in a state of nothingness, unless you start teaching what you know online." Anna Kow handed Sara a box of tissues as her tears rolled down into her collar. "Is there any reason for my existing?" Anna asked me. Sara looked at Anna, not at me. There was a pause of silence. "I'm hiring you as my mentor even though you're a visual anthropologist and a journalist," Anna said in a throaty voice. "Do you mind?" "I'll squeeze you into my girdle," Consuelo said. "Mentoring you won't work at this early stage. I'll put you down for one-on-one, starting this evening at seven in my office-without Sara." Consuelo jotted Anna's name and phone number in her appointment book. "How do you like being mother to the world?" Anna asked. "Someone's already asked me that before, when I wrapped a young woman in a blanket and asked her to tell me what she felt like as she confessed her anger at her betrayer." What happens when an extreme liberal meets an extreme conservative? Are they diagnosed with a mental disease or a character disorder? Or is it all a publicity campaign? In a novel of intrigue, will the anthropologist return a tougher soldier than ever? Two females pit their wits in a game and adventure that takes them half way around the world.

Book Sacramento Latina

Download or read book Sacramento Latina written by Anne Hart and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The one thing that we have in common always divides us, Dr. Consuelo Lopez, thought. Known by the inmates as "that Latina forensic 'shrink'" at Folsom, she arrived with several personality classifiers in her briefcase. The Folsom Warden, Don Redling, and Detective Kendall, who guarded the correctional officer escorted Consuelo into anarchist, Lenny Carr's cell. Kendall explained to Lopez, "I didn't follow you here. I'm here on research." "At the same moment of my appointment?" Consuelo smirked as she and Kendall entered the cell, squeezing behind Redling. "I'm not going to leave you alone in here," Kendall said, rolling his eyes in contempt at his colleague, Warden Redling. Carr had the circuit boards spread across the computer shell. "Controller failure." He jabbered at the innards. "Watch those tools," Redling specified. "We count 'em." "The computer is a fetish," Consuelo said. "Watch how Carr is magically influenced by the power of the fetish." Carr was a convicted murderer. The jury judged him a cold-blooded killer. Consuelo wondered whether he felt any empathy, or would the many tests reveal that he is a sociopath without conscience? She turned on her camcorder. "Look into the camera," she said. "I want that unblinking look in your eyes on video tape." "Since when could you resist the power of the media, doctor?" Carr chuckled. " Too bad the power's down, the generator is sputtering, and soon you'll all be locked in here with me, Dr. Lopez."

Book Schlepping Through the Alps

Download or read book Schlepping Through the Alps written by Sam Apple and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2006-03-28 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Breuer, Austria’s only wandering shepherd, is also a Yiddish folksinger. He walks the Alps, shepherd’s stick in hand, singing lullabies to his 625 sheep. Sometimes he even gives concerts in historically anti-Semitic towns, showing slides of the flock as he belts out Yiddish ditties. When New York-based writer Sam Apple hears about this one-of-a-kind eccentric, he flies overseas and signs on as a shepherd’s apprentice. For thoroughly urban, slightly neurotic Sam, stumbling along in borrowed boots and burdened with a lot more baggage than his backpack, the task is far from a walk in Central Park. Demonstrating no immediate natural talent for shepherding, he tries to earn the respect of Breuer’s sheep, while keeping a safe distance from the shepherd’s fierce herding dogs. As this strange and hilarious adventure unfolds, the unlikely duo of Sam and Hans meander through a paradise of woods and high meadows toward awkward encounters with Austrians of many stripes. Apple is determined to find out if there are really as many anti-Semites in Austria as he fears and to understand how Hans, who grew up fighting the lingering Nazism in Vienna, became a wandering shepherd. What Apple discovers turns out to be far more fascinating than he had imagined. With this odd and wonderful book, Sam Apple joins the august tradition of Tony Horwitz and Bill Bryson. Schlepping Through the Alps is as funny as it is moving.

Book Remnants

  • Author : Elyse Semerdjian
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

Download or read book Remnants written by Elyse Semerdjian and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and profoundly moving exploration of the Armenian genocide, told through the traces left in the memories and on the bodies of its women survivors. Foremost among the images of the Armenian Genocide is the specter of tattooed Islamized Armenian women. Blue tribal tattoos that covered face and body signified assimilation into Muslim Bedouin and Kurdish households. Among Armenians, the tattooed survivor was seen as a living ethnomartyr or, alternatively, a national stain, and the bodies of women and children figured centrally within the Armenian communal memory and humanitarian imaginary. In Remnants, these tattooed and scar-bearing bodies reveal a larger history, as the lived trauma of genocide is understood through bodies, skin, and—in what remains of those lives a century afterward—bones. With this book, Elyse Semerdjian offers a feminist reading of the Armenian Genocide. She explores how the Ottoman Armenian communal body was dis-membered, disfigured, and later re-membered by the survivor community. Gathering individual memories and archival fragments, she writes a deeply personal history, and issues a call to break open the archival record in order to embrace affect and memory. Traces of women and children rescued during and after the war are reconstructed to center the quietest voices in the historical record. This daring work embraces physical and archival remnants, the imprinted negatives of once living bodies, as a space of radical possibility within Armenian prosthetic memory and a necessary way to recognize the absence that remains.

Book excerpt: During the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, seven-year-old Thomas Moran finds himself accidentally embarking on a career in pickpocketing. In the following years he becomes a master of his dubious craft and grows to manhood traveling from state to state across America. His picaresque journey takes him through Prohibition and the Depression; into the desperate highs of the Hootchy-Kootchy and the dying vineyards of California, accompanied by an array of richly drawn characters frantically clutching at the crumbling American dream. Italian and Chinese gangsters, con artists, corrupt clergy, and speakeasy bootleggers all have a part to play in Tommy's destiny, but it is Effie, the great love of his life, who offers him the chance to change his future, and tries to save him from himself. Colorfully written, engaging, and richly evocative of an extraordinary period in American history, The Sucker's Kiss marks the literary debut of master storyteller Alan Parker.
