Book excerpt: A world-renowned women’s health expert reveals a bold, practical, and data-driven handbook for menstrual periods that provides an easy-to-navigate roadmap for improving your reproductive health—and your everyday quality of life. We’ve been lied to about periods. PMS, cramping, bloating, migraines, irritability, and anxiety may be extremely common, but contrary to popular belief, they aren’t normal. And they certainly aren’t “just part of being a woman,” despite the fact that this is what we’ve been told time and time again—by friends, family, and even doctors. After dedicating her entire clinical career to deconstructing the menstrual cycle, women’s health expert Kirsten Karchmer knows better. During her more than twenty years of research and treating thousands of patients, Karchmer found that most period problems women experience—even the most painful ones—are totally correctable and more surprisingly reflective of overall health and fertility. In this forthright, spirited, and all-encompassing guide, Karchmer draws on her decades’ worth of experience as a women’s health expert to break down the myths so many women have been led to believe about their periods. For the more than 82 million women in the world who suffer from menstrual conditions, Seeing Red explains the importance of a healthy menstrual cycle (and how to achieve it) and why it is important to the women’s movement. Menstrual cycles are not a curse, but an instrument providing women with one of the most valuable, regularly occurring, and free diagnostic tools they have, giving them access to unprecedented health and power.

Book excerpt: Following the events of the unforgettable Star Trek crossover trilogy Destiny, the new captain of the USS Voyager embarks on a dangerous mission that is paved with blood and haunted by ghosts of the past. When the USS Voyager is dispatched on an urgent mission to the planet Kerovi, Captain Chakotay and his first officer, Commander Thomas Paris, must choose between following their orders and saving the lives of two of those dearest to them. B’Elanna Torres and her daughter, Miral, are both missing in the wake of a brutal attack on the Klingon world of Boreth. With the aid of their former captain, Admiral Kathryn Janeway—as well as many old friends and new allies—the crew must unravel an ancient mystery, placing themselves between two warrior sects battling for the soul of the Klingon people...while the life of Miral hangs in the balance. But these events and their repercussions are merely the prelude to even darker days to come. As Voyager is drawn into a desperate struggle to prevent the annihilation of the Federation, lives are shattered, and the bonds that were forged in the Delta Quadrant are challenged in ways that none could have imagined. For though destiny has dealt them crushing blows, Voyager’s crew must rise to face their future...and begin a perilous journey in which the wheel of fate comes full circle.

Admiral Kathryn Janeway has now taken command of the Full Circle Fleet. Her first mission: return to the Delta Quadrant and open diplomatic relations with the Confederacy of the Worlds of the First Quadrant, a civilization whose power rivals that of the Federation. Captain Chakotay knows that his choices could derail the potential alliance. While grateful to the Confederacy Interstellar Fleet for rescuing the Federation starships from an alien armada, Voyager’s captain cannot forget the horrors upon which the Confederacy was founded. More troubling, it appears that several of Voyager’s old adversaries have formed a separate and unlikely pact that is determined to bring down the Confederacy at all costs. Sins of the past haunt the crew members of the Full Circle Fleet as they attempt to chart a course for the future. Will they learn much too late that some sins can never be forgiven…or forgotten? ™, ®, & © 2014 CBS Studios, Inc. STAR TREK and related marks are trademarks of CBS Studios, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 2

Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 2 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings in worship are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a sixty-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers who have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing--yet important--in accessible formats for the current literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amanda Bechtel's story is the fictionalized account of the true life experiences of a United Methodist missionary nurse to Mozambique. She learns about life under secret police surveillance as she studies Portuguese in Lisbon. Once Amanda arrives in Mozambique, she must decide about her future after being deported by the Portuguese government. After she's reassigned to Rhodesia, the district health officer quarantines the hospital during a cholera epidemic. Later news reports about conditions in a Rhodesian "protected" village prompt missionaries to visit the site. Film smuggled out of the country eventually provides evidence to defend missionary colleagues accused of subversive activity and treason. On Amanda's return to Mozambique, arrest and torture of Protestant clergy heighten safety concerns at the hospital. Renewed fighting thwarts her amorous involvement with a colleague turned freedom fighter. Jonna-Lynn K. Mandelbaum grew up in eastern Pennsylvania and went to Philadelphia's Methodist Hospital School of Nursing for a diploma in nursing. From there she went to Lebanon Valley College to earn a bachelor's degree prior to her appointment as a United Methodist missionary nurse to Mozambique. On her return from Africa she worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner in the inner city and earned a master's degree in public health from The Johns Hopkins University. She wrote THE MISSIONARY AS A CULTURAL INTERPRETER to earn a doctorate in education from Georgia State University. While she has taught nursing in the United States and held various clinical nursing positions international health was the dominant focus of her professional career. She developed and implemented educational programs for both undergraduate and continuing education programs for physicians, nurses, midwives and other health professionals in southeast Asia and central and eastern Europe. Now retired, she resides in northern New Mexico with her husband and two dogs. To find out more visit www.jonna-lynn.com
