Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King's College Lectures on Colonial Problems Sir Charles Lucas's volumes on the history of the Colonies are recognised as standard works in the literature of the subject, and, from his long experience of the Colonial Office, there is no one better qualified to trace the influence on Empire of the progress of science. Sir Everard im Thurn can speak of native land and labour in the South Seas with an exceptional authority, as he has investigated the questions at first hand, and has brought to them knowledge of native customs and practices derived from experience in other parts of the British Empire. Professor Egerton is recognised as a leading authority on the early history of the self-governing Dominions, whose marvellous growth has brought to the front difficult and complicated questions of International Law which must in course of time be solved. I am glad to learn that these problems have now begun to occupy the attention of those who, like Dr. Lawrence, have made International Law their particular study. Book The Federation Movement in Fiji 1880 1902

Download or read book The Federation Movement in Fiji 1880 1902 written by Ahmed Ali and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiji became a British Crown Colony in 1874 when the chiefs of Fiji ceded their islands to Queen Victoria. Initially, European settlers welcomed British rule but soon became disillusioned with it as a result of the policies of the first governor, Sir Arthur Gordon, who restricted the amount of land they could obtain and denied them the use of Fijian labourers. The introduction of Indian labourers in 1879 did little to appease European settlers who claimed that unlike the large Australian Colonial Sugar Refining Company they could not afford the cost of imported labour. The Federation Movement in Fiji 1880-1902 examines European settlers' failed attempts to federate with various Australian states and with New Zealand as well as their political gains during the period which laid the foundation for European political dominance in the Fiji islands.

Book A Frozen Field of Dreams Science Strategy and the Antarctic in Norway Sweden and the British Empire 1912 1952

Download or read book A Frozen Field of Dreams Science Strategy and the Antarctic in Norway Sweden and the British Empire 1912 1952 written by Peder William Chellew Roberts and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2010 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dissertation examines how actors in Norway, Sweden, and the British Empire conceived the Antarctic as a space for science during the years 1912 to 1952. Instead of tracing a narrative of enlightenment, how science became the dominant form of activity in the Antarctic, I examine a series of episodes with particular attention to why particular kinds of science held sway within specific political, cultural, and economic contexts. Concerned more with how Antarctic science was planned and justified than how it was executed in the field, the project draws upon recent scholarship in geography and geopolitics, as well as the history of exploration. The six case studies involve an aborted Anglo-Swedish Antarctic expedition in 1912; Britain's interwar Antarctic whaling research program; debates among whaling magnates and their associates over the relationship between Antarctic science and whaling in interwar Norway; the culture of polar exploration that emerged at Cambridge (and to some extent Oxford) between the world wars; the approach to polar exploration and quantitative glaciology pioneered by the Swedish geographer Hans Ahlmann; and the complicated history of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949-52). I conclude with an epilogue arguing that the rise of international science in the Antarctic during the 1950s reflected the geopolitical dynamics of the Cold War, rather than the triumph of science over politics.

Book The Naturalist and His beautiful Islands

Download or read book The Naturalist and His beautiful Islands written by David Russell Lawrence and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘I know no place where firm and paternal government would sooner produce beneficial results then in the Solomons … Here is an object worthy indeed the devotion of one’s life’. Charles Morris Woodford devoted his working life to pursuing this dream, becoming the first British Resident Commissioner in 1897 and remaining in office until 1915, establishing the colonial state almost singlehandedly. His career in the Pacific extended beyond the Solomon Islands. He worked briefly for the Western Pacific High Commission in Fiji, was a temporary consul in Samoa, and travelled as a Government Agent on a small labour vessel returning indentured workers to the Gilbert Islands. As an independent naturalist he made three successful expeditions to the islands, and even climbed Mt Popomanaseu, the highest mountain in Guadalcanal. However, his natural history collection of over 20,000 specimens, held by the British Museum of Natural History, has not been comprehensively examined. The British Solomon Islands Protectorate was established in order to control the Pacific Labour Trade and to counter possible expansion by French and German colonialists. It remaining an impoverished, largely neglected protectorate in the Western Pacific whose economic importance was large-scale copra production, with its copra considered the second-worst in the world. This book is a study of Woodford, the man, and what drove his desire to establish a colonial protectorate in the Solomon Islands. In doing so, it also addresses ongoing issues: not so much why the independent state broke down, but how imperfectly it was put together in the first place.
