Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Alfred's Old English Version of St. Augustine's Soliloquies In preparing this edition for use in college classes, many problems have arisen the best solution of which I can hardly hope to have reached. I leave the work to stand on whatever merits it may have. It should be noted that the facsimiles of the manuscript are reduced 2/7 of the linear dimensions. The first is of folio 4 (1. 1 ff. of text); the second, of folio 29 a (37. 13 ff.). In the absence of any good modern English version of this work, the rather copious translations, found in the Introduction, will perhaps be pardoned. The construction of the text is somewhat of a compromise. I have generally held to the manuscript readings; but where a form was meaningless, or a scribal error was evident, I have not hesitated to emend. When such emendations have been made, the manuscript readings have always been given in the foot notes. For the paragraphing, capitalization, punctuation, and quantity-marks, I am responsible. The Notes attempt to indicate the relation of the Old English version to its Latin sources; otherwise they are merely suggestive. The Glossary is intended to be exhaustive, except for a few oft-recurring forms. My thanks are due to Mr. Andrew Keogh for looking over the proof of the Introduction, and to my wife for verifying the line-references of the Glossary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Alfred's Old English Version of St. Augustine's Soliloquies: Turned Into Modern English It is no wonder that one should labor in tim ber-work, both in the gathering and also in the building; but every man desireth that, after he hath built a cottage on his lord's lease and by his help, he may sometimes rest himself therein, and go hunting, fowling, and fishing; and use it in every manner according to the lease, both on sea and land, until such time as he shall gain the fee simple of the eternal heritage through his lord's mercy. So may the rich Giver do, who ruleth both these temporary cottages and the homes everlasting. May He, who created both and ruleth both, grant me to be fit for each - both here to be useful and thither to attain. Download or read book Books and Libraries in Early England written by Helmut Gneuss and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this second volume from Helmut Gneuss are devoted to the study of books, their readers, and libraries in medieval England, especially in the Anglo-Saxon period. The selection opens with a survey of the history of the medieval English library, followed by detailed studies of Anglo-Saxon book production. These also examine its relation in the 9th century to King Alfred's plan for educational reform, and to the intellectual history of the 10th century. Two articles deal with liturgical books, and include the standard classified list of liturgical manuscripts. To end, there is an analysis of the earliest modern catalogue of books with Old English texts, that by George Hickes, and an investigation of the history of the Latin hymnal in Britain.

Download or read book Language and Culture in the Growth of Imperialism written by Sharron Gu and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political science interpretations of international relations tend to focus on abstract terms of economic interest, domination, rights and justice. Trapped within this limited horizon, the discipline fails to explain why nations of similar economic structure would have variant ideas for their foreign policies, and why nations with different economic structures and ideologies could develop a similar global posture during certain periods of their histories. This innovative study examines imperialism from a cultural and linguistic perspective, portraying the rise and fall of ancient Greek, Roman, medieval Islamic, modern British, Russian and American empires as a part of the natural life of world civilizations. As these imperial cultures matured through centuries of literary accumulation and interaction with other cultures, they finally found their confidence on the world stage and transitioned from an aggressive policy towards others to a more tolerant one.

Download or read book Studies in Earlier Old English Prose written by Paul E. Szarmach and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1985-10-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old English prose before the late tenth century is examined in this collection of hitherto unpublished essays. Using a variety of techniques, the authors explore well-known and lesser-known texts in search of a better understanding of why, how, and by whom the manuscripts were produced. Part I of the collection contains six studies of Alfredian prose—the Soliloquies, the Pastoral Care, and Consolation of Philosophy—all of which are translations traditionally associated with King Alfred. Part II contains nine essays on various prose works outside of the Alfredian milieu, including the Old English Dialogues, the Old English Bede, the Chronicle and Laws, and various religious works. The authors emphasize the importance of a fresh look at Latin backgrounds and sources and the need to return to manuscript evidence for new insights. As a group, they argue for sympathetic contextual analysis, urging scholars in the field to reexamine the prose of the earlier Old English period to find cultural and literary value and significance. A bibliographical appendix supplements the Greenfield-Robinson bibliography for the period ending in 1982. The contributions in this volume complement the eleven essays found in The Old English Homily and Its Background, edited by Paul E. Szarmach and Bernard F. Huppe, also published by SUNY Press.
