The behavior in every case can be accurately described by the same general kinetic relationship, ?W = KtN, where the empirically determined co-efficients, K and N, can be used to separate the tendency for a corrosion product to form from the effect of that corrosion product on the subsequent reaction. The specific kinetic equations which apply in each case can be used to reliably predict long-term atmospheric corrosion behavior.

Book excerpt: A damage function for predicting the corrosion of galvanized steel structures by wet and dry deposition has been developed from the thermodynamics and kinetics of atmospheric corrosion chemistry. The function mathematically expresses the competing reactions for the buildup and dissolution of the basic zinc-carbonate corrosion film with exposure time. Major findings as expressed by the theoretical function are as follows: 1. During periods of surface wetness, SO2 reaching the surface reacts stoichiometrically with the zinc. 2. Rain acidity reacts stoichiometrically with the zinc. 3. The corrosion film of basic zinc carbonate is soluble in clean rain. The dissolution depends on the residence time of rain on the galvanized steel surface. 4. Deposition velocity controls the rate of corrosion of galvanized steel structures by gaseous SO2 during periods of wetness.

Book excerpt: Humankind's use of zinc stretches back to antiquity, and it was a component in some of the earliest known alloy systems. Even though metallic zinc was not "discovered" in Europe until 1746 (by Marggral), zinc ores were used for making brass in biblical times, and an 87% zinc alloy was found in prehistoric ruins in Transylvania. Also, zinc (the metal) was produced in quantity in India as far back as the thirteenth century, well before it was recognized as being a separate element. The uses of zinc are manifold, ranging from galvanizing to die castings to electronics. It is a preferred anode material in high-energy-density batteries (e.g., Ni/Zn, Ag/Zn, ZnJair), so that its electrochemistry, particularly in alkaline media, has been extensively explored. In the passive state, zinc is photoelectrochemically active, with the passive film displaying n-type characteristics. For the same reason that zinc is considered to be an excellent battery anode, it has found extensive use as a sacrificial anode for the protection of ships and pipelines from corrosion. Indeed, aside from zinc's well-known attributes as an alloying element, its widespread use is principally due to its electrochemical properties, which include a well-placed position in the galvanic series for protecting iron and steel in natural aqueous environments and its reversible dissolution behavior in alkaline solutions.

Book excerpt: Corrosion damage due to acid deposition has been studied by exposing samples of galvanized steel, nickel and latex house paint (with and without carbonate extender) at three test sites in the Greater Los Angeles area and in Salinas, CA. Atmospheric corrosion rate monitors (ACRM) with zinc or nickel sensors facing the sky or the ground have also been exposed. The ACRMs provide a continuous record of the time-of-wetness and atmospheric corrosion rates. The results of the field tests show that corrosion rates for galvanized steel are very low with the lowest rates being observed in the winter months. The higher corrosion rates observed during the summer are considered to be caused by nitric acid produced by photochemical oxidation of NOx.
