Download or read book Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation written by F. Family and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation presents the proceedings of the International Topical Conference on Kinetics of Aggregation and Gelation held on April 2-4, 1984 in Athens, Georgia. The purpose of the conference was to bring together international experts from a wide variety of backgrounds who are studying phenomena inherently similar to the formation of large clusters by the union of many separate, small elements, to present and exchange ideas on new theories and results of experimental and computer simulations. This book is divided into 57 chapters, each of which represents an oral presentation that is part of a unified whole. The book begins with a presentation on fractal concepts in aggregation and gelation, followed by presentations on topics such as aggregative fractals called ""squigs""; multi-particle fractal aggregation; theory of fractal growth processes; self-similar structures; and interface dynamics. Other chapters cover addition polymerization and related models; the kinetic gelation model; a new model of linear polymers; red cell aggregation kinetics; the Potts Model; aggregation of colloidal silica; the ballistic model of aggregation; stochastic dynamics simulation of particle aggregation; particle-cluster aggregation; kinetic clustering of clusters; computer simulations of domain growth; and perspectives in the kinetics of aggregation and gelation. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of chemistry, theoretical physics, and materials engineering.

Book The Effect of Shear on Colloidal Aggregation and Gelation Studied Using Small angle Light Scattering

Download or read book The Effect of Shear on Colloidal Aggregation and Gelation Studied Using Small angle Light Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigated the effect of shear on the structure and aggregation kinetics of unstable colloids using small angle light scattering. We used an aqueous suspension of 20 nm polystyrene latex microspheres and MgCl2 to induce aggregation. The sample was only sheared once for approximately 33 seconds at different times, typically 1 min., 5 min., or 15 min., after the onset of aggregation. The average shear rate was in the range of 0.13 - 3.56 s[negative superscript 1], which was in a laminar regime. The unsheared sample gelled after ca. 45 min. When the sample was sheared soon after the onset of aggregation, the aggregation followed DLCA kinetics to yield D[subscript f]= 1.80 [plus or minus] 0.04 aggregates unaffected by the shear. The gel time also remained the same as the unsheared gel. Shearing at later stages of aggregation shortened the gel time and enhanced the scattered light intensity significantly indicating rapid growth. Then, depending on the shear rate, there were three different behaviors. At high shear rates, the aggregate structure was inhomogeneous after the shear was stopped with a crossover in slope in the scattered light intensity vs. q, to imply hybrid superaggregates with two different fractal dimensions. At intermediate shear rates far from the gel point, there was a similar crossover after the shear was stopped; however, the fractal dimension regained 1.80 [plus or minus] 0.04 at the gel point. At low shear rates, the aggregation rate was increased, but the aggregate structure was uniform, and the fractal dimension remained 1.75 [plus or minus] 0.05.

Book Kinetics of Gelation in Photoreversible Gels

Download or read book Kinetics of Gelation in Photoreversible Gels written by Sanjoy Sircar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart materials, or materials that respond to some stimulus by changing their properties, make up an active area of research in many fields. Light can be considered an especially attractive choice of stimulus because it can be applied with precise spatial and temporal control, and is non-invasive. This thesis explores light sensitive gels and colloids, which could be used as valves in microfluidics devices, as tunable templates for the production of nanoparticles, or as devices for capturing pollutants or delivering drugs. At the basis of the sensitivity to light is the azobenzene chemical group, which isomerizes from cis to trans under visible light and the reverse under UV light. When this group is embedded in the hydrophobic tail of a surfactant, the aggregation properties of the surfactant become light-sensitive. The trans form of the azobenzene surfactant is more likely to form micelles than the cis. When mixed with a hydrophobically modified polymer, these micelles can act as crosslinking sites for a gel network. Upon UV irradiation, the crosslinking is disrupted and the gel transitions to a solution state. NMR methods were used to characterize the micelles and gels, and to understand the steps that control the kinetics in these photoreversible systems. The gelation process can be considered to consist of photoreaction, micelle formation, and possibly polymer relaxation. It was found that the photon flux through the material limits the rate of reaction, which then controls the remaining processes in the system. The photoreaction was studied under varying conditions, including concentration, light intensity, and wavelength. Due to their optical thickness, these materials are possibly better suited for use as thin films. NMR experiments were also used to probe the interactions between the polymer and surfactant. In contrast to surfactant-only solutions, trans-dominated and cis-dominated micelles appeared equally likely to form aggregates with an appropriate polymer. The cis-rich aggregates failed to effectively crosslink the polymer and form a gel. This was confirmed by using diffusion measurements to monitor the size of crosslinked polymer clusters. This cluster growth correlated well with previous rheology results, but the high tendency of cis samples to form aggregates had not been anticipated. It is hypothesized that cisdominated aggregates are too small and unstable to act as crosslinking sites. In an effort to create a wider array of tunable colloids, the azobenzene surfactant was then mixed with a traditional surfactant of opposite charge. Solutions consisting of oppositely charged surfactants have been known to result in unilamellar vesicles, when prepared at appropriate concentrations and mixing ratios. The size, type and number density of the aggregates in this work were found to be controllable through the use of light. Depending on the light conditions, either nanodiscs or vesicles could be observed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have shown that simple power-law dynamics is expected for flexible fractal objects. Although the predicted behavior is well established for linear polymers, the situationm is considerably more complex for colloidal aggregates. In the latter case, the observed K-dependence of (r) can be explained either in terms of non-asymptotic hydrodynamics or in terms of weak power-law polydispersity. In the case of powders (alumina, in particular) apparent fractal behavior seen in static scattering is not found in the dynamics. ID. W. Schaefer, J. E. Martin, P. Wiitzius, and D. S. Cannell, Phys. Download or read book Molecular Gels written by Richard G. Weiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Molecular Gels: Materials with Self-Assembled Fibrillar Networks" is a comprehensive treatise on gelators, especially low molecular-mass gelators and the properties of their gels. The structures and modes of formation of the self-assembled fibrillar networks (SAFINs) that immobilize the liquid components of the gels are discussed experimentally and theoretically. The spectroscopic, rheological, and structural features of the different classes of low molecular-mass gelators are also presented. Many examples of the application of the principal analytical techniques for investigation of molecular gels (including SANS, SAXS, WAXS, UV-vis absorption, fluorescence and CD spectroscopies, scanning electron, transmission electron and optical microscopies, and molecular modeling) are presented didactically and in-depth, as are several of the theories of the stages of aggregation of individual low molecular-mass gelator molecules leading to SAFINs. Several actual and potential applications of molecular gels in disparate fields (from silicate replication of nanostructures to art conservation) are described. Special emphasis is placed on perspectives for future developments. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners either already researching self-assembly and soft matter or new to the area. Those who will find the book useful include chemists, engineers, spectroscopists, physicists, biologists, theoreticians, and materials scientists.

Book Generalized Statistical Thermodynamics

Download or read book Generalized Statistical Thermodynamics written by Themis Matsoukas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the definitive mathematical answer to what thermodynamics really is: a variational calculus applied to probability distributions. Extending Gibbs's notion of ensemble, the Author imagines the ensemble of all possible probability distributions and assigns probabilities to them by selection rules that are fairly general. The calculus of the most probable distribution in the ensemble produces the entire network of mathematical relationships we recognize as thermodynamics. The first part of the book develops the theory for discrete and continuous distributions while the second part applies this thermodynamic calculus to problems in population balance theory and shows how the emergence of a giant component in aggregation, and the shattering transition in fragmentation may be treated as formal phase transitions. While the book is intended as a research monograph, the material is self-contained and the style sufficiently tutorial to be accessible for self-paced study by an advanced graduate student in such fields as physics, chemistry, and engineering.
