Download or read book Anelthalien written by H.A. Pruitt and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Kindle discovers a necklace that transports her to a strange land called Anelthalien, all she wants is to return home. Soon, though, Kindle meets the strange yet kind Cifra and discovers that the necklace carries with it much more than a simple painting. After meeting three others who also find similar necklaces, the Cifra lead them to a farmer who also proves to hold many more secrets from times altered out of Anelthalien's memory. Once the farmer begins recalling the past and linking Kindle and the three others to it, Kindle realizes that returning home may not be as easy or as important as she believes. In fact, none of them expect the necklaces will tie them to not only an almost forgotten past but a gilded present and possibly disastrous future. Anelthalien provides an approachable, enchanting picture of the difficult, destructive problem of apathy toward God so that readers readily realize the problem does exist and that they must leave their preoccupations and misconceptions to follow God. From Anelthalien, readers will learn that tying yourself to God results in living out a purpose bigger and more important than yourself and also that followers of God must tell others about Him.

Download or read book Four Shades of Gray written by Simon Peter Rowberry and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book-length analysis of Amazon’s Kindle explores the platform’s technological, bibliographical, and social impact on publishing. Four Shades of Gray offers the first book-length analysis of Amazon’s Kindle and its impact on publishing. Simon Peter Rowberry recounts how Amazon built the infrastructure for a new generation of digital publications, then considers the consequences of having a single company control the direction of the publishing industry. Exploring the platform from the perspectives of technology, texts, and uses, he shows how the Kindle challenges traditional notions of platforms as discrete entities. He argues that Amazon’s influence extends beyond “disruptive technology” to embed itself in all aspects of the publishing trade; yet despite industry pushback, he says, the Kindle has had a positive influence on publishing. Rowberry documents the first decade of the Kindle with case studies of Kindle Popular Highlights, an account of the digitization of books published after 1922, and a discussion of how Amazon’s patent filings reflect a shift in priorities. Rowberry argues that while it was initially convenient for the book trade to outsource ebook development to Amazon, doing so has had adverse consequences for publishers in the mid- and long term, limiting opportunities for developing an inclusive and forward-thinking digital platform. While it has forced publishers to embrace digital forms, the Kindle has also empowered some previously marginalized readerships. Although it is still too early to judge the long-term impact of ebooks compared with that of the older technologies of clay tablets, the printing press, and offset printing, the shockwaves of the Kindle continue to shape publishing.

Download or read book The World Turned Upside Down written by Greg Albo and published by Monthly Review Press. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World Turned Upside Down? poses two overarching questions for the new period opened by the Trump election and the continued growth of right-wing nationalisms. Is there an unwinding of neoliberal globalization taking place, or will globalization continue to deepen, but still deny the free cross-border movement of labor? Would such an unwinding entail an overall shift in power and accumulation to specific regions of the Global South that might overturn the current world order and foster the disintegration of the varied regional blocs that have formed? These questions are addressed through a series of essays that carefully map the national, class, racial, and gender dimensions of the state, capitalism, and progressive forces today. Sober assessment is crucial for the left to gain its political bearings in this trying period and the uncertainties that lie ahead.

Online book sites such as the Google Books project, the Open Library, HathiTrust, and others are transforming our thoughts on just what a library is and does, and expanding the possibilities of what a library can be. Library staff need to be knowledgeable about these sites, but unfortunately many libraries— particularly those in the public arena—do not have the budget or staff time to learn about these sites and integrate them into their library services. eBooked! Integrating Free Online Book Sites into Your Library Collection fills this pressing need. This book examines four of the largest and most popular free, online book sites. Each is discussed in detail in its own chapter, profiling the service in question, identifying its origins and organization and presenting specific, concrete details that describe how to make effective use its available resources. Screenshots, applicable library scenarios, and sample questions that readers can use to quiz themselves are included. The end of each chapter contains a helpful summary that recaps the main points. Other helpful sites are discussed as well.
