Book How Kindergarten Came to America

Download or read book How Kindergarten Came to America written by Bertha von Marenholtz-Bülow and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published as "Reminiscences of Friedrich Froebel," this enchanting 1894 account of the German inventor of kindergartens was instrumental in bringing kindergartens to the United States. This lively portrait of a pioneer of modern education is a refreshing reminder of the essential role of play and creative exploration in the development of children. Froebel's methods provide a much-needed antidote to the current emphasis on high-stakes testing and accelerated curricula--a corruption, as Herbert Kohl argues in his foreword, of the original concept of kindergartens as children's gardens of learning.

This book was released on 1914 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The survey of the status of kindergartens in the United States for the school year 1911-1912 was made with the idea of gathering together quantitative facts. The question-forms, therefore, asked chiefly for returns in figures, and these will be found summarized and tabulated in the statistical section of this bulletin. Figures are significant if read back into the setting from which they were taken, and interpreted in relation to their context; they are rich material to one who makes a rich use of them, but void otherwise. The statistics given in Section II should accordingly be read with direct reference to the material presented in the other sections, particularly the opinions of superintendents, primary supervisors, and grade teachers in different cities. It is interesting to note the numerical extension of public kindergartens and all other kinds of kindergartens at the close of June, 1912, particularly in comparison with the figures obtained by the Bureau of Education in 1902, and published in the Commissioner's Report for that year. These figures showed a total of 3,244 kindergartens, with an enrollment of 205,432 children. Contents include: (1) Introduction; (2) Statistics; (3) Kindergartens as viewed by superintendents, primary supervisor and first-grade teachers; and (4) Abstracts of papers read at the meeting of the International Kindergarten Union, Washington, D.C. (Contains 6 tables.) [Best copy available has been provided.].

Book Kindergartens and Cultures

Download or read book Kindergartens and Cultures written by Roberta Wollons and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the nineteenth century, the German kindergarten - banned by the Prussian government as revolutionary - spread rapidly to nations around the globe, becoming at once a local and modernising institution. This book is a collection of case studies that describe the remarkable diffusion, adoption, and transformation of the kindergarten in eleven modern and developing nations. The contributors to the volume examine the process by which the idea of the kindergarten arrived and was adopted in these countries - a process that invariably demonstrated the immense power of local cultures, whether Christian, Buddhist, or Islamic, to respond to and reformulate borrowed ideas. Borrowing cultures do not engage in passive mimicry, the studies show, but recast ideas for their own purposes. Beginning with Germany, the chapters of this book follow the kindergarten idea as it passed in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to the United States, then England, Australia, Japan, China, Poland, Russia, Vietnam, Turkey, and Israel. The contributors examine such complex political, social, and cultural issues as the relationship of gender to national educational policies, the impact of mi

Book The Most Important Year

Download or read book The Most Important Year written by Suzanne Bouffard and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening look inside pre-K in America and what it will take to give all children the best start in school possible. At the heart of this groundbreaking book are two urgent questions: What do our young children need in the earliest years of school, and how do we ensure that they all get it? Cutting-edge research has proven that early childhood education is crucial for all children to gain the academic and emotional skills they need to succeed later in life. Children who attend quality pre-K programs have a host of positive outcomes including better language, literacy, problem-solving and math skills down the line, and they have a leg up on what appears to be the most essential skill to develop at age four: strong self-control. But even with this overwhelming evidence, early childhood education is at a crossroads in America. We know that children can and do benefit, but we also know that too many of our littlest learners don’t get that chance—millions of parents can’t find spots for their children, or their preschoolers end up in poor quality programs. With engrossing storytelling, journalist Suzanne Bouffard takes us inside some of the country’s best pre-K classrooms to reveal the sometimes surprising ingredients that make them work—and to understand why some programs are doing the opposite of what is best for children. It also chronicles the stories of families and teachers from many backgrounds as they struggle to give their children a good start in school. This book is a call to arms when we are at a crucial moment, and perhaps on the verge of a missed opportunity: We now have the means and the will to have universal pre-kindergarten, but we are also in grave danger of not getting it right.

Book Past Caring

  • Release : 1989
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book Past Caring written by Emily D. Cahan and published by National Center for Children in Poverty. This book was released on 1989 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph focuses on early forms of preschool care and education, the professions and children in the 1920s and 1930s, the federal role in a series of crisis interventions, and social and intellectual changes affecting early education in the 1960s and 1970s. The rise of a two-tier system for care and education of the preschool child is addressed first. On one hand, a nursery school and kindergarten system for middle-income children developed into one whose primary focus was to supplement enrichment available at home. These nursery schools and kindergartens were held together as a system by their aim of educating and socializing the growing child. On the other hand, a childminding or day care system for low-income children developed in response to the necessity of maternal employment outside the home. The report examines consequences of the stratified system of preschool care and education for poor children and their families. The most important of these was the stigmatization of child care as a function of social welfare. It is concluded that various "suitable home" eligibility requirements established for applicants of social welfare benefits have caused minorities (especially blacks) to be consistently excluded from the system. Over 100 references are cited. (RH)
