Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Child's World: Morning Talks and Stories for Kindergartens, Primary Schools and Homes The preparation of these talks and stories was first under taken for the kindergartens of Boston and vicinity. With the talks especially, great freedom in. The use of the material offered was always urged as essential to good results, and such freedom 18 urged more than ever, in submitting the collection to a wider circle of teachers and children. The subjects follow, somewhat, the course of the kindergarten year, but selection must be exercised, since there is often under one subject more than enough for two weeks' work with the children. Book Kindergarten Stories for the Sunday School and Home Classic Reprint

Download or read book Kindergarten Stories for the Sunday School and Home Classic Reprint written by Laura Ella Cragin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Stories for the Sunday School and Home The spirit of reverence is often destroyed by the gestures which are introduced with the songs. Miss Beard, in her pamphlet entitled Music in the Prim ary Sunday School, emphasizes the fact that ges tures, as a rule, detract from, rather than add to, the helpfulness of the songs. In an introductory chapter to her book, The Kindergarten Sunday School, she offers many helpful suggestions regarding the music in the Kindergarten. In singing, though the words are of supreme im portance and should not only be such as to impress the desired truth, but also should be so simple as to come easily within the child's comprehension, the musical setting is likewise essential. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of good Sunday School music and for my stories I have frequently been obliged to suggest songs for the sake of the words, though the music was unsatisfactory. Too many songs should not be given, as it is bet ter to have a few thoroughly learned than many only partially committed. Though new songs have some times been suggested ou successive Sundays, it has been intended that a choice should be made from them, not that all should be used. In order to prevent self-consciousness, it is rarely wise to ask individual children to sing or speak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story Hour: A Book for the Home and the Kindergarten Story-telling, like letter-writing, is going out of fashion. There are no modern Scheherezades, and the Sultans nowadays have to be amused in a different fashion. But, for that matter, a hundred poetic pastimes of leisure have fled before the relentless Hurry Demon who governs this prosaic nineteenth century. The Wandering Minstrel is gone, and the Troubadour, and the Court of Love, and the King's Fool, and the Round Table, and with them the Story-Teller. "Come, tell us a story!' It is the familiar plea of childhood. Unhappy he who has not been assailed with it again and again. Thrice miserable she who can be consigned to worse than oblivion by the scathing criticism, "She does n't know any stories!' and thrice blessed she who is recognized at a glance as a person likely to be full to the brim of them. There are few preliminaries and no formalities when the Person with a Story is found. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The magic and wonder of winter’s first snowfall is perfectly captured in Ezra Jack Keat’s Caldecott Medal-winning picture book. Young readers can enjoy this celebrated classic as a full-sized board book, perfect for read-alouds of all kinds and a great gift for the holiday season. In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. Universal in its appeal, this story beautifully depicts a child's wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. This big, sturdy edition will bring even more young readers to the story of Peter and his adventures in the snow. Ezra Jack Keats was also the creator of such classics as Goggles, A Letter to Amy, Pet Show!, Peter’s Chair, and A Whistle for Willie. (This book is also available in Spanish, as Un dia de nieve.) Praise for The Snowy Day: “Keats made Peter’s world so inviting that it beckons us. Perhaps the busyness of daily life in the 21st century makes us appreciate Peter even more—a kid who has the luxury of a whole day to just be outside, surrounded by snow that’s begging to be enjoyed.” —The Atlantic "Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly
