The eyeball was then pulled still further forward, thus exposing more completely its attachment to the optic tract. This was next cut away with one stroke of the scissors. A rather profuse hemorrhage, produced by the sectioning of the ophthalmic artery, then occurred which we did not attempt to check. In a short time, this ceased of its own accord; the cavity was next thoroughly cleansed with sterile normal salt solution. The second eyeball was then removed, additional ether being administered by means of a cone if necessary. The animal was then put into a small freshly cleaned cage and allowed to recover. No effort was made to close the site of the wound or to restrain the animal from scratching it. Of course, in this way, we ran the risk of having infection develop. It is almost impossible, however, wholly to prevent the possibility of this in the eye operation. In order to show the almost total absence of any shock effects resulting from the above described operation, we shall quote the following from our notes: "Four male rats, all from one litter, born September 10, 1905, were operated upon March 24, 1906. Both eyeballs removed. The immediate shock effects were almost nil. The rats accepted food six hours after the operation. Twenty-four hours later they had thoroughly cleansed themselves. Motor control perfect. Several difficult feats were performed during this period of observation, such as balancing upon the rim of their little 8" by 4" wire cages. They walked around the edge of these cages with ease. They balanced themselves upon a small stender dish containing water--hind legs on dish, fore legs in air. One rat obtained some food, a second followed, bowled the first rat over, felt in his mouth...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize-winning economist explores how the mind works—an early landmark in the field of cognitive science. The Sensory Order, first published in 1952, sets forth F. A. Hayek's classic theory of mind in which he describes the mental mechanism that classifies perceptions that cannot be accounted for by physical laws. Though Hayek is more commonly known as an icon in the field of economics, his genius was wide-ranging—and his contribution to theoretical psychology is of continuing significance to cognitive scientists as well as to economists interested in the interplay between psychology and market systems, and has been addressed in the work of Thomas Szasz, Gerald Edelman, and Joaquin Fuster. “A most encouraging example of a sustained attempt to bring together information, inference, and hypothesis in the several fields of biology, psychology, and philosophy.”—Quarterly Review of Biology

Book The Sensory Order and Other Writings on the Foundations of Theoretical Psychology

Download or read book The Sensory Order and Other Writings on the Foundations of Theoretical Psychology written by F. A. Hayek and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to his influential scholarship on economic and social theory, F. A. Hayek greatly impacted theoretical psychology with his book "The Sensory Order." Perhaps because he was a social scientist, Hayek s work in psychology has been mostly overlooked. Editor Viktor Vanberg frames "The Sensory Order" as an essential work necessary for any deeper understanding of Hayek s economic and social philosophy while adding on several important essays by Hayek that help illuminate the ideas of the book since its original publication in 1952. As volume 14 of the Collected Works of F. A. Hayek, "The Sensory Order "will definitively take its place as an integral and foundational part of Hayek s oeuvre."

Book Edgar Rubin and Psychology in Denmark

Download or read book Edgar Rubin and Psychology in Denmark written by Jörgen L. Pind and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edgar Rubin was one of the outstanding pioneers of perceptual psychology in the early twentieth century. His approach involved a turning away from an earlier elementaristic psychology towards an approach based on “perceptual wholes.” Rubin’s approach is closely linked to the Gestalt revolution in perceptual psychology and was eagerly embraced by the Gestaltists. This has often led to Rubin being classified as a Gestalt psychologist. This misrepresents his position as is shown in the book. Rubin’s aim was to develop a descriptive psychology — or aspective psychology to use his terminology — which would do full justice to the complex nature of psychological phenomena. Thus he rejected attempts by the Gestalt psychologists to explain diverse phenomena within a single overarching framework. While Rubin is internationally often misclassified as a Gestalt psychologist, in Denmark he is often hailed as a pioneer of a specific Danish “school of phenomenology.” This also misrepresents Rubin’s approach who was highly critical of psychological “schools.” His criticisms of the overambitious theoretical aspirations of Gestalt psychology, his negative attitude towards school formation in psychology were both highly prescient. What remains today of Gestalt psychology is primarily its descriptive parts; the idea of schools of psychology, so common in early twentieth century psychology is now seen as a totally outmoded viewpoint. There is an interesting moral in this story for the history and status of psychology; to wit, that Rubin’s emphasis on the correct description of psychological phenomena shows what is likely to live on as classic contributions to psychology. This certainly holds for his own work on figure and ground which, after almost a century, is still universally known and admired by psychologists. He was indeed a consummate psychological observer. The book argues for the importance of description in psychology.

Book Brain Mechanisms in Problem Solving and Intelligence

Download or read book Brain Mechanisms in Problem Solving and Intelligence written by Robert Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a decade of research on the neu roanatomical mechanisms of learning in the young laboratory rat. It is essentially a discourse on the functional organization of the brain in relation to problem-solving ability and intelli gence. During the period between 1980 and 1989, well over 1000 weanling albino rats were subjected to localized brain damage (or sham operations in the case of the controls) under deep anesthesia and aseptic surgical conditions, were allowed tore cover, and subsequently were tested on a wide variety of prob lems designed to measure general learning ability. Since vir tually every part of the brain rostral to the medulla has been explored with lesions, it has become possible not only to map a number of "putative" brain systems underlying the acquisition of distinctive problem-solving tasks, but to isolate several neu roanatomical mechanisms that appear to be selectively in volved in the acquisition of particular kinds of goal-directed learned activities. Of particular interest was the discovery of a "nonspecific mechanism" (previously referred to in our re search reports as the "general learning system") inhabiting the interior parts of the brain. One objective of this volume was to make these maps available in a single source. Another was to provide a descrip tion of learning syndromes arising from local lesions to differ ent parts of the brain.
