Download or read book Pakistan Regional Security and Conflict Resolution written by Farooq Yousaf and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how colonial legacies and the postcolonial state of Pakistan negatively influenced the socio-political and cultural dynamics and the security situation in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' areas, formerly known as the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It offers a local perspective on peace and conflict resolution in Pakistan's Pashtun 'tribal' region. Discussing the history and background of the former-FATA region, the role of Pashtun conflict resolution mechanism of Jirga, and the persistence of colonial-era Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) in the region, the author argues that the persistence of colonial legacies in the Pashtun 'tribal' areas, especially the FCR, coupled with the overarching influence of the military on security policy has negatively impacted the security situation in the region. By focusing on the Jirga and Jirga-based Lashkars (or Pashtun militias), the book demonstrates how Pashtuns have engaged in their own initiatives to handle the rise of militancy in their region. Moreover, the book contends that, even after the introduction of constitutional reforms and FATA's merger with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, little has changed in the region, especially regarding the treatment of 'tribal' Pashtuns as equal citizens of Pakistan. This book explains, in detail, why indigenous methods of peace and conflict resolution, such as the Jirga, could play "some" role towards long-term peace in the South Asian region. Historically and contextually informed with a focus on North-West Pakistan, this book will be of interest to academics researching South Asian Studies, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, terrorism, and traditional justice and restorative forms of peace-making.

Download or read book Perspectives on Contemporary Pakistan written by Ghulam Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses problems of governance, development and environment affecting contemporary Pakistan; issues that lie at the centre of federal and provincial policy deliberations, formulation and implementation. The book offers a comprehensive assessment of the policies, or lack thereof. Authors from a variety of disciplines empirically and conceptually evaluate latest developments, events and data regarding law and order, economic under-performance, social intolerance and climate crisis. The book offers varied perspectives on state sovereignty, civil-military relations, spousal violence, rural development, CPEC, nuclear governance and transboundary climate risk. Arguing that the conclusions should be adopted by the social, political and economic stakeholders of Pakistan, as well as the region at the higher level of governability, the book demonstrates that it would both boost national morale and inspire individuals to further investigate to come up with innovative solutions. Examining some of the most pressing and persistent problems Pakistan and South Asia is facing, the book will be of interest to academics working in the fields of Political Science, in particular South Asian Politics, Development Studies and Environmental Studies.

Download or read book Allama Mashriqi written by Nasim Yousaf and published by . This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, Islamia College, one of the iconic learning institutions of Pakistan, marked its Platinum Jubilee. Islamia College first opened its doors to students in 1913 in Peshawar, a Muslim dominated province, where most men were illiterate and female education was considered a sin. The College, planted at the gate of the famous Khyber Pass (connecting Pakistan and Afghanistan), had successes and influence that extended well beyond the old-fashioned city and into the entire North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) in British India. The founders of the College, Nawab Sir Sahibzada Abdul Qayyum, Sir George Roos-Keppel, L. Tipping, and Allama Mashriqi, deserve tremendous credit for these successes. In honor of the College's 100-year anniversary, this booklet provides a background on one of its founding fathers, Allama Mashriqi (who was the first Vice Principal and later Principal of the College). Mashriqi is best known today as the Founder of the Khaksar Tehrik and for his instrumental role in liberating India from British rule. Mashriqi believed that a nation could not rise without education, and demonstrated a lifelong commitment to advancing this cause - from breaking academic records at the University of Cambridge to promoting education among females (including within his own family). At Islamia College, Mashriqi introduced a number of revolutionary reforms and practices, and his progressive thought process helped the institution transform education by bringing an awakening among the males and females in the North West Frontier Province. As a result of his efforts, Mashriqi was promoted to Under Secretary of Education in India and inducted as a member of the prestigious Indian Educational Service (I.E.S.). This booklet provides an overview of the early days of Islamia College as well as Mashriqi's background and many contributions to the institution as he progressed through his career as an educationist. Indeed, the College's legacy is a testament to the pivotal role played by Allama Mashriqi and the other founding fathers in establishing a strong foundation and ensuring the success of the institution.

Download or read book Public Health and Disasters written by Emily Ying Yang Chan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the health emergency and disaster risk management (H-EDRM) research landscape, with examples from Asia. In recent years, the intersection of health and disaster risk reduction (DRR) has emerged as an important interdisciplinary field. In several landmark UN agreements adopted in 2015–2016, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris climate agreement, and the New Urban Agenda (Habitat III), health is acknowledged as an inevitable outcome and a natural goal of disaster risk reduction, and the cross-over of the two fields is essential for the successful implementation of the Sendai Framework. H-EDRM has emerged as an umbrella field that encompasses emergency and disaster medicine, DRR, humanitarian response, community health resilience, and health system resilience. However, this fragmented, nascent field has yet to be developed into a coherent discipline. Key challenges include redundant research, lack of a strategic research agenda, limited development of multisectoral and interdisciplinary approaches, deficiencies in the science–policy–practice nexus, absence of standardized terminology, and insufficient coordination among stakeholders. This book provides a timely and invaluable resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, scholars, and frontline practitioners as well as policymakers from across the component domains of H-EDRM.

Download or read book Countering Violent Estremism in Pakistan written by Anita M. Weiss and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies and analyzes the impact of the various ways in which local people are responding, taking stands, recapturing their culture, and saying 'stop' to the violent extremism that has manifested over the past decade (even longer) in Pakistan. Local groups throughout Pakistan are engaging in various kinds of social negotiations and actions to lessen the violence that has plagued the country since the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan which let loose abarrage of violence that overflowed into its borders. In so many ways, Pakistanis are engaging in powerful actions that transform how people think about their own society, impeding extremists' rants while acting on 'envisioning alternative futures'. This book, hence, focuses on finding the sparks ofhope that local people are creating to counter violent extremism based on close ethnographic study of ground realities about not only what people are doing but why they are selecting these kinds of actions, how they are creating alternative narratives about culture and identity, and their vision of a future without violence. This book is also designed to celebrate what is flourishing in cultural performances, music, social activism, and the like in Pakistan today because of people's commitmentto take stands against extremism.
