Book FIFTEEN LECTURES ON THE ARCHAEOLOGY ALONG THE SILK ROAD

Download or read book FIFTEEN LECTURES ON THE ARCHAEOLOGY ALONG THE SILK ROAD written by Lin Meicun and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen Lectures on the Archaeology along the Silk Road is a representative work by Lin Meicun, a Peking University professor who enjoys worldwide fame on Silk Road archaeological research. This book gives a systematic account of the history of economic and cultural communications between China and the West via the silk roads from the Bronze Age (2100B.C.-500B.C.) to Zheng He’s voyages (1405-1433A.D.) to the western oceans, covering the Yangtze and Yellow rivers in China, South Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, North Africa, and Europe. This book shows the Silk Road as a road network not only for China’s Western trade of Chinese goods, such as silk, porcelains, jade and tea and its long-term imports of dragonfly eye glass beads, smalt, ambergris, incense, and other luxuries of Western origin, but also for the spread of Chinese culture to the West and Greek art and Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Nestorianism and Manichaeism to the East. It not only includes the knowledge accumulated in relevant fields for a long time, but also incorporates the latest archaeological discoveries and research achievements. The author reaches many talented conclusions that are inspiring for the settlement of some disputes in the related field and illustrates his set of ideas with some 300 figures and pictures, among which many are first publicized.

Book A New Version of the G ndh r Dharmapada and a Collection of Previous birth Stories

Download or read book A New Version of the G ndh r Dharmapada and a Collection of Previous birth Stories written by Timothy Lenz and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the detailed examination of the British Library Kharosthi scrolls--extremely fragile and brittle fragments of manuscript on birch-bark rolls. Although their provenance is uncertain, there are strong indications that they came from Hadda in eastern Afghanistan and were most likely written in the early first century A.D. during the reign of the Saka rulers, making them the oldest known Buddhist manuscripts. Fragments 16 and 25 are two long, relatively narrow fragments that obviously belong to the same scroll. Two texts were written on the scroll, each by a different scribe. The first text, referred to as the Gandhari London Dharmapada, represents an anthology of verses well known in the Buddhist tradition. The second text is a series of stories concerning previous births of the Buddha and of some of his disciples. Book Beyond Evacuation

Download or read book Beyond Evacuation written by Najib Azad and published by EBL Books. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Najib Azad’s memoir offers a whole new and more personal understanding of the ancient and magnificent country of Afghanistan and its people. Leader of a progressive political party, and former spokesman for the President of Afghanistan, Azad knew he was a marked man the moment the Taliban entered Kabul in 2021. This is his harrowing and heartwarming story of how he, his wife and four small children were forced, like his parents and grandparents before him, to seek refuge abroad. Written on napkins and pieces of cardboard while in refugee camps, the deep love felt by Azad for his country, fellow Afghans and his family emanates from every word as he takes us on his journey from his office in Kabul to a new life in the USA. Readers walk every step with him, feel every moment of anguish as he strives to allay his children’s suffering as well as that of others around him.

Book Uddiyana Guru Padmasambhava The Second Buddha

Download or read book Uddiyana Guru Padmasambhava The Second Buddha written by Prabir Kumar Pattanaik and published by B K PUBLICATIONS PRIVATE LIMITED. This book was released on 2024-07-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buddhist Acharya Padmasambhava of the Vajrayana school of Mahayana sect, being invited by the king of Tibet, went there during the first half of the eighth century AD. He firmly established this esoteric form of Buddhism there and other Himalayan lands, which is known as “Lamaism”. He is deified and celebrated in Lamaism as Buddha himself, even more than that. As a direct result of Padmasambhava’s efforts, the people of Tibet were elevated to a state of unsurmountable spiritual culture. He is, therefore, truly one of the greatest of the world’s culture heroes. He is most revered and is honoured as the Second Buddha. He belongs to India and hails from Uddiyana. Therefore, he is popularly known as Uddiyana Guru. But, a holy personality known all over the world, a Great Guru, is almost a forgotten name in India, least remembered, not in history, not in literature, not anywhere even among the Buddhist circles in India. Padmasambhava originally belongs to Uddiyana, the location of this place has been disputed by some scholars to be in Swat Valley within the ancient Gandhara region, which is not tenable. The present work is an attempt to study all aspects pertaining to this Guru, starting from his magical appearance and penances to his mystical life, his works and achievements all through the Himalayan region along with Tibet. That leads to establish strongly that the home of the Uddiyana Guru is nowhere else but in Odisha. Focus has been laid to establish facts and all evidences showing that Uddiyana is but Odisha. This may be considered as the exclusive and exhaustive compilation, published for the first time in India.
