Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: Every year, during the month of July, thousands of Christians from all parts of the world gather for a Convention for the deepening of the spiritual life, lasting one week, in the little town of Keswick, which nestles at the foot of Skiddaw mountain and beside beautiful Lake Derwentwater, in the Lake District of northern England, a region famous by association with the Lake poets - Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey - and for picturesque and fascinating scenery unsurpassed in all England, if not in all Europe. Since 1875, when the first of these Conventions was held, the influence of what is taught there has been increasingly felt in the Christian world, until Keswick teaching has come to be regarded as one of the most potent spiritual forces in recent Church history. The 'Keswick movement' has become historic.... Here, then, we have the teaching of Keswick, one of the most interesting religious phenomena of our time.

Book Transforming Keswick

Download or read book Transforming Keswick written by Charles Wesley Price and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commissioned to mark our 125th anniversary, Transforming Keswick is a thorough, readable and detailed history of the Convention. It will be of interest to those who know and love Keswick, those who are only just discovering it, and serious scholars eager to learn more about the history of Gods dealings with His people. It was in June 1875 that the vicar of St Johns Church, Keswick, Canon T D Harford-Battersby planned three days of Union Meetings for the Promotion of Practical Holiness to be held in a tent on the vicarage lawn. These first inauspicious meetings had remarkable consequences, and the annual Convention that grew out of them did more to shape evangelical Christianity in the twentieth century than any other movement. Ian Randall and Charles Price have written the story of Keswick from its inception to the present time. Ian, who teaches at Spurgeons College tells the story, and Charles, former Principal of Capernwray Bible School, deals with some of the controversies and issues that have arisen over the years.

Book Hope Food for the Journey Themes

Download or read book Hope Food for the Journey Themes written by Elizabeth McQuoid and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us get hope all wrong. We hope for better health, a generous pay rise or good grades for our children. Our wishful thinking may or may not have a good outcome, but when it does, it never leaves us satisfied. This 30-day devotional in the Food for the Journey series shows us that Christian hope, by contrast, is guaranteed and eternal, dealing with certainties: Christ's death for us, his forgiveness of sin and our hope of heaven when we die. Covering passages from Matthew, 1 Peter, Romans, 2 Corinthians, 1 Thessalonians and Revelation, in this devotional some of the Keswick Convention's most beloved preachers - including Don Carson, Ray Ortlund and Jonathan Lamb - unpack the Bible's teaching on hope. In self-contained daily devotions they show us how we can enjoy the pleasures of earth knowing that they point to the far greater delights we'll experience one day in God's presence. In a small, easily portable format, Hope is perfect for carrying around with you on the go. Like all the Food for the Journey books, its undated format means you can start and finish at any time of the year, and work through it at your own pace. Whether you are looking to renew your own sense of hope and wonder at God's goodness, or want to dig more deeply into what the Bible teaches us about hope, this little devotional is packed full of wisdom that will help strengthen your faith in your walk with Christ. 'The hope set before us' is far greater than we can ever imagine. This devotional shows the glorious contours of our inexhaustible hope, offering encouragement and reassurance, whatever our present circumstances may be.

The Keswick Movement is the most difficult of the three main holiness traditions to delineate. Unlike the Wesleyan Holiness and Holiness Pentecostal traditions, the Keswick Movement has not gone through a definitive period of careful theological refining and institutional boundary setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She couldn't believe it. There she was with her medical qualifications sitting on the floor of a mental hospital. She'd been baptized, offered her life to God, wanted to serve him anywhere, but no, surely not this... Sharon Hastings is absolutely passionate about helping anyone who suffers from 'severe and enduring mental illness' (SEMI): schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder. She wants the church to know all about these illnesses: how they devastate ordinary people and how they need to be treated. By telling her story, warts and all, showing her own tortuous, painful journey, she equips us to come alongside loved ones, fellow church members, friends and neighbours, understanding the social and spiritual ramifications of their illnesses, including them in our activities (where appropriate) and encouraging their spiritual growth. A natural storyteller, the author draws us in. We journey with her as she shares deeply. With wisdom, kindness and the heart of a bruised survivor, she interweaves her exceptional story with vital teaching which cannot be ignored by anyone within the church today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This scientific-historical biography explores the influences that shaped the spirituality of Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur. J. (Hans) Kommers investigates the historical background of Amy's childhood in Millisle and Belfast and provides new and more scholarly information than existing biographies. He researched a variety of Keswick-related literature in order to provide a fuller picture of Amy's connection with the Keswick Convention and their teaching. The descriptions of the life of the millworkers in Belfast, the happenings on the worldwide stage and Victorian missionary work and methods round out the picture to give the reader a greater understanding of Amy Carmichael. These new facts are most enlightening." --Dr Jackuelin Woolcock MB BChir MRCP (Lond), Director Dohnavur Fellowship Corporation, Shoreham by Sea, UK, and Doctor in Dohnavur India 1969-1987 "Triumphant Love: The Contextual, Creative and Strategic Missionary Work of Amy Beatrice Carmichael in South India provides the msot extensive biography thus far of Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), a major figure on the missionary landscape of the late 19th and the first half of the 20th century. She is seen by some as the Protestant mother Teresa (both women worked in India and devoted all of their time and energy to the poor). The book is very well researched. The author states that the purpose of the extensive research he undertook 'was to get a closer and clearer picture of Amy Carmichael as the founder off the Dohnavur Fellowship.' Also, he wanted 'to give a balanced account of her dealings with people and especially her life with God.' He does this. It provides the most comprehensive picture of this remarkable woman. It is the definitive source of reference. J. (Hans) Kommers's view of the life of Amy Carmichael is that of a fellow evangelical. He explains that not only Amy, but many missionaries of her time were inspired by the ideal that all people should have the opportunity to hear of Christ's salvation. According to him, her inspirational work is still relevant today." --Prof. Dr Gijsbert van den Brink, URC Professor for Theology and Science, Faculty of Theology, Free University Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The great reformer Martin Luther famously declared, ‘My conscience is captive to the Word of God’. What about us? What importance do we give to listening to God’s word and letting it shape our lives? The 2017 Convention explored these questions, encouraging us to be captivated by God’s word so that, by his Spirit, we’d be transformed into Christ’s likeness, ready to serve him passionately wherever he’s placed us. This Year Book includes a selection of talks given during the three weeks of Convention: Bible teaching from Alistair Begg, Michael Reeves, Daniel Strange, Andy Prime, Tim Chester, Roger Simpson, Steve Midgley and Martin Salter to help you hear and obey God’s word.

Lambie was called a “loose cannon” by his Presbyterian missionary colleagues in British Sudan in 1907 because of his energy, vision, and spiritual fervor. Through combined gifts of diplomacy and medical prowess, Lambie, together with two missionary colleagues, launched the Sudan Interior Mission in Ethiopia in 1927. The goal of this enterprise was to evangelize the primal religionists of southern Ethiopia. During ten years of pioneering mission efforts by Lambie and nearly one hundred SIM cohorts, a young church of nearly fifty baptized believers was formed. The missionaries were then evicted from Ethiopia by the invading Italians in 1936. This modest beginning became the foundation for what is today the vibrant Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church, the largest evangelical denomination in Ethiopia.
