In the 20th century, Izhavas pursued mobility in many social arenas, both as a newly united caste and as families. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Asian studies, grade: 1,3, Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus (The Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning), course: World Heritage Studies, language: English, abstract: This paper is an analysis on the transformations seen on the Chattayum mundum which is the traditional attire of Syrian Christian women in Kerala, for it to have emerged as a costume for Margamkali, which is a native Syrian Christian dance-form. I argue that although the Chattayum mundum became part of a vanishing tradition among the Syrian Christians; but by virtue of Margamkali, the Chattayum mundum has become revitalised. Thereby, the interaction between Chattayum mundum and Margamkali in contemporary Kerala, is analysed. The preliminary part of this research has been complemented by the successive phenomenological research that was based on the interviews of Syrian Christian women in Kerala. Detailed interpretations on the interviewees’ lived experiences of having worn the Chattayum mundum has been accounted for. Also, the coexistence of Chattayum mundum in its traditional form and as a Margamkali costume in the contemporary context, has been analysed. Thus, this research serves as a specific case study for heritage practitioners, to understand the potential role of contemporary artforms in revitalising the traditional forms of fashion.

Drawing on pilgrim anecdotes, shrine practices, official hagiographies, and regional lore, author Corinne Dempsey demonstrates how the business of saints routinely extends beyond their capacity as earthly conduits of miraculous power. Saintly characters described in this book, hailing from the religiously pluralistic south Indian state of Kerala, tend not only to the health and happiness of individual devotees but help craft and express the multiple identities and complex power relations of their devotional communities as well. Throughout the study, Dempsey highlights the traditions of Sr. Alphonsa of Bharananganam (1910-1946) and St. George the martyr, two figures who reflect the many preoccupations of Kerala sainthood. Sr. Alphonsa, native of Kerala and famous for her life of suffering and posthumous power, stands in line to be canonized by the Vatican. St. George, the caped dragon slayer imported to Kerala by Syrian merchants and later by Portuguese and British colonizers, is today partially debunked by Rome. These two figures, while differing dramatically in temperament, nationality, age of cult, and Vatican standing, boast a vast popular appeal in Kerala's Kottayam district. In examining Sr. Alphonsa and St. George, Dempsey shows how Kerala's saint traditions reflect devotees' hybrid identities in both colonial and postcolonial times. This ethnography of Christian sainthood within a Hindu cultural context, of "foreign" traditions adopted by native practice, and of female sanctity negotiated through patriarchal expectation is poised at a number of intersections. Dempsey provides not only a comparative study of cultures, religions, and worldviews, but also a unique grounding for contemporary ethnographic, post-colonial, and feminist concerns.

Their comfortable lives, however, were haunted by a feud between the Black Jews of Ernakulam and the White Jews of Mattancherry. Separated by a narrow stretch of swamp and the color of their skin, they locked in a rancorous feud for centuries, divided by racism and claims and counterclaims over who arrived first in their adopted land. Today, this once-illustrious people is in its dying days. Centuries of interbreeding and a latter-day Exodus from Kerala after Israel's creation in 1948 have shrunk the population. The Black and White Jews combined now number less than fifty, and only one synagogue remains. On the threshold of extinction, the two remaining Jewish communities of Kerala have come to realize that their destiny, and their undoing, is the same. The Last Jews of Kerala narrates the rise and fall of the Black Jews and the White Jews over the centuries and within the context of the grand history of the Jewish people.
