Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kenilworth Festivities: Comprising Laneham's Description of the Pageantry, and Gascoigne's Masques, Represented Before Queen Elizabeth, at Kenilworth Castle, Anno 1575; With Introductory Prefaces, Glossarial and Explanatory NotesThe uncommon interest which has been excited by the admirable historical romance of Kenilworth, has in duced the publisher of the present volume to reprint a contem orary' account of the. Pageants at the Castle of the Earl of 'eicester, 'with such revisions and improvements as might best qualify it forhgeneral reading. 'english prose, ' in the reign of Queen lizabeth, was either harsh and immusical in its own construction, or was rendered almost unintelligible by fantastical and romantic expres sions, such as were used by Puttenharri Lill Lite, Sir Philip Sidne and others. Robert flaneham, the author of the. Fo lowing descriptive Letter, as an officer of the'court, naturally fell into the style of speak ing'and writing Which was then fashionable; and ac cordingly his sentences are often' so metaphorical, or constructed of such singular expressions, that they would lead the plain and general reader to doubt what was his true meaning, Such, together with the affected and pedantic mode of spelling, were the publisher's motives or, modernising 'this curious document, and for adding, the ekplanatoi'y notes which accompan it. By many his labours will doubtless be received wit pleasure but to those who would tenaciously adhere to the ver rust of antiquity, he dld remark with an eminent iblio graphical writer, that Laneham's language is not changed; but Only f' the dust'is taken from his coat, and the tarnish from his lace. Having thus shewn the reasons which first induced a modern edition of this amusing detail Of the Kenilworth festivities, it remains to give somefac-i count of the author master robert laneham'.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Progresses Pageants and Entertainments of Queen Elizabeth I

Download or read book The Progresses Pageants and Entertainments of Queen Elizabeth I written by Jayne Elisabeth Archer and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-03-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other English monarch before or since, Queen Elizabeth I used her annual progresses to shape her royal persona and to bolster her popularity and authority. During the spring and summer, accompanied by her court, Elizabeth toured southern England, the Midlands, and parts of the West Country, staying with private and civic hosts, and at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. The progresses provided hosts with unique opportunities to impress and influence the Queen, and became occasions for magnificent and ingenious entertainments and pageants, drawing on the skills of architects, artists, and craftsmen, as well as dramatic performances, formal orations, poetic recitations, parades, masques, dances, and bear baiting. The Progresses, Pageants, and Entertainments of Queen Elizabeth I is an interdisciplinary essay collection, drawing together new and innovative work by experts in literary studies, history, theatre and performance studies, art history, and antiquarian studies. As such, it will make a unique and timely contribution to research on the culture and history of Elizabethan England. Chapters include examinations of some of the principal Elizabethan progress entertainments, including the coronation pageant Veritas temporis filia (1559), Kenilworth (1575), Norwich (1578), Cowdray (1591), Bisham (1592), and Harefield (1602), while other chapters consider the themes raised by these events, including the ritual of gift-giving; the conduct of government whilst on progress; the significance of the visual arts in the entertainments; regional identity and militarism; elite and learned women as hosts; the circulation and publication of entertainment and pageant texts; the afterlife of the Elizabethan progresses, including their reappropriation in Caroline England and the documenting of Elizabeth's reign by late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century antiquarians such as John Nichols, who went on to compile the monumentalThe Progresses of Queen Elizabeth (1788-1823).

Book The Poem the Garden and the World

Download or read book The Poem the Garden and the World written by Jim Ellis and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How an early modern understanding of place and movement are embedded in a performative theory of literature How is a garden like a poem? Early modern writers frequently compared the two, and as Jim Ellis shows, the metaphor gained strength with the arrival of a spectacular new art form—the Renaissance pleasure garden—which immersed visitors in a political allegory to be read by their bodies’ movements. The Poem, the Garden, and the World traces the Renaissance-era relationship of place and movement from garden to poetry to a confluence of both. Starting with the Earl of Leicester’s pleasure garden for Queen Elizabeth’s 1575 progress visit, Ellis explores the political function of the entertainment landscape that plunged visitors into a fully realized golden world—a mythical new form to represent the nation. Next, he turns to one of that garden’s visitors: Philip Sidney, who would later contend that literature’s golden worlds work to move us as we move through them, reorienting readers toward a belief in English empire. This idea would later be illustrated by Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queen; as with the pleasure garden, both characters and readers are refashioned as they traverse the poem’s dreamlike space. Exploring the artistic creations of three of the era’s major figures, Ellis argues for a performative understanding of literature, in which readers are transformed as they navigate poetic worlds.
