Book The Hyksos

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2010-04-01
  • ISBN : 1725228041

Download or read book The Hyksos written by John Van Seters and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hyksos, foreign rulers of Egypt in the Second Intermediate Period--from about 1700 to 1550 B.C.--have been a source of continuing debate among archaeologists and historians. Mr. Van Seters approaches the problems of their rise to power, their dynasties, the nature of their rule, and their religion from the joint perspectives of archaeology and literary criticism. Archaeological investigation shows the Middle Bronze culture of Syria-Palestine to have had highly developed fortifications, advanced urban life, fine buildings and temples, and a high quality of practical and artistic craftsmanship. Based on a revised date for the long-known The Admonitions of Ipuwer, this study offers a fresh explanation of the Hyksos' rise to power. A new examination of the location of Avaris, their capital, indicates that the previous identification with Tanis must give way to the region near Qantir. The Hyksos were not Hurrians or Indo-Aryans, but Ammurite princes who rose to power in Egypt following the dynastic weaknesses at the end of the Middle Kingdom.

Book The Gurkhas

Download or read book The Gurkhas written by Eden Vansittart and published by South Asia Books. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Excellent Volume On The Gurkhas Compiled Under The Orders Of The Govt. Of India By Lieut. Col. Eden Vansittart, And Recently Issued As One Of The Handbooks For The Indian Army. There Is An Interesting Chapter On Customs, Manners, And Characteristics Of The Gurkhas. Col. Vansittart Does Not Profess That His Observations Are Particularly Original, And He Has Drawn Freely On Many Distinguished Writers Who Have Made A Close Study Of These Interesting People. But On The Other Hand, He Has Had A Long Personal Acquaintance With Them, And Even While He Writes In Terse Sentences More Like The Phraseology Of Drill Book Than An Effort In Literature, The Effect Is Far From Displeasing. It Gives Indeed A Sharp And Vivid Impression Of The People And Of Their Manners, Which Has Not Been Surpassed In Any Other Work. Of Physical Appearance, After Describing The Mixed Origin Of The Race, The Colonel Remarks: I Doubt Anyone Being Also To Fell The Difference Between Any Magars, Gurangs, Limbus, Rais And Sunwars . Three Hundred Years Before Christ Buddhism Flourished In Nepal And It Is Still Nominally The Faith Of Most Newars, But Hinduism Is Steadily Displacing It, And Col. Vansittart Thinks That Possibly Buddhism May Have Entirely Disappeared A Century Hence. Social Relations Appear To Be Governed More By Custom, Than By The Fixed Rules, And Superstitution Prevails So Widely That The Most Ordinary Occurrence Of Everyday Life Are Referred To Supernatural Agency, Frequently To The Malevolent Action Of Some Demon. Marriage Is Still Arranged In Childhood, And Involves The Parents In Costly Feasts And Presents. A Man Whose Wife Dies May Marry Again, But A Widow Must Not Do So, Though It Is Not Considered Disgraceful For Her To Form Part Another Man S Household. Divorce Is Very Easy If Both Parties Agree To It. A Husband Has To Pay Rs. 40 For His Freedom, But The Woman Is Required To Find Rs. 40 For His Freedom, But The Woman Is Required To Find Rs. 160. If The Money Is Available, The Remainder Of The Process Is Very Simple. Two Pieces Of Split Bamboo Are Tied Together And Placed On Two Mud Balls, And The Money Is Laid Beside Them. If Either Party Takes Up The Bamboos, Breaks Them And Sicks Up The Money The Other Part Can Go His Or Her Way In Peace And Amity, And Marry Again Legally. Col. Vansittart Hs Many Observations To Make On The Peculiarity Of The Several Tribes Or Families, And Show The Great Qualities Most Of Them Possess As Soldiers. His Book In Fact Is One That Every Officer Who Has To Deal With The Gurkhas Will Find It Advantageous To Read, As To Keep As A Work Of Reference.

Book Living Well Together

Download or read book Living Well Together written by Douglass Whitfield Bailey and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Well Together investigates the development of the Neolithic in southeast and central Europe from 6500-3500 cal BC with special reference to the manifestations of settling down. A collection of reports and comments on recent fieldwork in the region, Living Well Together? provides 14 tightly written and targeted papers presenting interpretive discussions from important excavations and reassessments of our understanding of the Neolithic. Each paper makes a significant contribution to existing knowledge about the period, and the book, like its companion (Un)settling the Neolithic (Oxbow 2005) will be a benchmark text for work in this region. The reports in Living Well Together? play out the critical questions posed in the earlier volume: how should one interpret settlement; what of the difference between tells and flat sites; what do we mean by permanent occupation; can we avoid the assumptions that underlie claims for year-round residence or seasonal occupation; why, in some regions and at some times, did people maintain residence for so many generations that monumental tell settlements grew to dominate the visual and social landscape; what would a viewshed analysis of tells reveal; what are the dynamics of households in Neolithic Greece; how should we see the emergence of pottery in terms of material culture; and what were the origins of the LBK, and how can we understand its development? The volume's authors have succeeded in attacking existing thought, in provoking new discussion and in creating new paths to understanding the nature of human existence in the Neolithic. Together they set a new agenda for studying the Neolithic across and beyond southeastern and central Europe.
