Book The Best of Borneo Travel

Download or read book The Best of Borneo Travel written by Victor T. King and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Best of Borneo Travel is just that, a fascinating collection of colorful travel notes by Westerners--from those who first visited this Indonesian island-nation in the the sixteenth century to writers still enthralled by Borneo today. Through the eyes of these European explorers, merchants, administrators, and adventurers we see the kinds of images that captivated the popular imagination of Europe, as well as the stereotypes that developed regarding Borneo's "exotic" peoples and cultures. We witness first-hand the wonders of the equatorial rainforest: animals such as the orang utan, the beautiful flowers and trees that abound along the rivers and rapids, majestic mountains like Kinabalu, sacred to the Borneans. And in some of the nineteenth century accounts we see a reflection of the prevailing social Darwinism of the period--the "natural" assertion of Western political, military, and economic superiority over the "Wild Men of Borneo." Nevertheless, many travelers to Borneo writing here remarked on the wealth and cultural sophistication of the native peoples, and after the first flush of colonialism, the accounts returning to Europe become more balanced--while the interest in the new and strange continues, it is tempered with descriptions of people that are, as people are everywhere, "just like us."

Book Animism in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Animism in Southeast Asia written by Kaj Arhem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animism refers to ontologies or worldviews which assign agency and personhood to human and non-human beings alike. Recent years have seen a revival of this concept in anthropology, where it is now discussed as an alternative to modern-Western naturalistic notions of human-environment relations. Based on original fieldwork, this book presents a number of case studies of animism from insular and peninsular Southeast Asia and offers a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon – its diversity and underlying commonalities and its resilience in the face of powerful forces of change. Critically engaging with the current standard notion of animism, based on hunter-gatherer and horticulturalist societies in other regions, it examines the roles of life forces, souls and spirits in local cosmologies and indigenous religion. It proposes an expansion of the concept to societies featuring mixed farming, sacrifice and hierarchy and explores the question of how non-human agents are created through acts of attention and communication, touching upon the relationship between animist ontologies, world religion, and the state. Shedding new light on Southeast Asian religious ethnographic research, the book is a significant contribution to anthropological theory and the revitalization of the concept of animism in the humanities and social sciences.

Book Submarine Telegraphy and the Hunt for Gutta Percha

Download or read book Submarine Telegraphy and the Hunt for Gutta Percha written by Helen Godfrey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Submarine Telegraphy and the Hunt for Gutta Percha, Helen Godfrey traces the connections between submarine telegraphy and the peoples of Singapore and Sarawak (Borneo) who supplied 'gutta percha', the latex insulating the world network of undersea telegraph cables. The book examines the complex inter-relationships linking metropolitan and local environments in a trade once described as a matter of interest to the whole civilized world. Using previously untapped corporate and official archives, trade data and a rich documentary record, the study explores the roles of cable producers, scientists, administrators, and local Chinese and indigenous traders. It reveals how a global trade may transcend technological, geographic and cross-cultural challenges, even hostilities. Motivations and outcomes are more complex than simple commercial gain.

Book Remaking the Landscape

  • Author : Jennifer Jenkins
  • Publisher : Profile Books(GB)
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9781861973757
  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Remaking the Landscape written by Jennifer Jenkins and published by Profile Books(GB). This book was released on 2002 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British landscape is changing for ever - and faster than ever. This book analyses the causes and consequences, and what can be done to make our cities, towns and countryside better places. British landscapes - from the tip of Scotland to the toe of Cornwall, including the cities - are under huge pressure from shifting population and increasing travel, climate change, new patterns or work and leisure, and changing farming practices. Many fear that these changes can only damage the landscape, but this is not the whole story. For example, the 'edgelands' around big cities have blossoming wildlife and are home to endangered species. And the current crisis in farming gives a chance to do things better in the arable lowlands as well as in the livestock uplands. Twelve expert contributors, including Simon Jenkins, Crispin Tickell, Marion Shoard, David Cannadine and Philip Lowe, develop exciting ideas covering such issues as the urban landscape, climate change, the aftermath of foot-and-mouth, ecology and sustainable development. Bryn Green and Oliver Rackham discuss the future of the countryside where farming is in retreat: will it be preserved as an ersatz museum, will low-density building proliferate or will the land revert to scrub and then to woodland. Other contributors include; David Banister, David Cannadine, John I Clarke, Bryn Green, Ian Hodge, James Hunter, Simon Jenkins, Richard Keen, Uwe Latacz-Lohmann, Philip Lowe, Oliver Rackham, Marion Shoard and Crispin Tickell.

Book excerpt: An Economic History of Malaysia, c.1800-1990 , provides the first general history of the Malaysian economy over the past two centuries, including a survey of the pre-colonial era. A unique feature is that it integrates the historical experiences of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak as a case study in the onset of modern economic growth. Particular attention is paid to explaining Malaysia's signal success in achieving a relatively smooth shift away from the primary commodity export economy of the colonial period to near-NIC status by 1990.
