Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Goddess and God in the World, leading theologians Carol P. Christ and Judith Plaskow debate the nature of divinity, proposing a new method called embodied theology. They agree that the transcendent, omnipotent male God of traditional theology must be reimagined. Carol proposes that Goddess is the intelligent embodied love that is in all being. Judith counters that God is an impersonal power of creativity that includes both good and evil. Rooting their views in experience and questioning each other, they offer a fruitful model of theological conversation across difference.

Download or read book A Serpentine Path written by Carol P. Christ and published by FAR Press. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Serpentine Path: Mysteries of the Goddess is Carol P. Christ’s moving memoir of her journey from death to rebirth and regeneration, culminating on the first Goddess Pilgrimage to Crete. Having left behind the male God of traditional religion who rules the world from outside it, Christ hopes that the Goddess can help her manifest her heart’s desires. Deeply disappointed, she discovers the Goddess as a personal presence who is always with her and every other individual in the world, but whose power is not omnipotence. The mystery of the Goddess is revealed at the ancient site of Kato Zakros in Crete as the dance of life: a serpentine path with no beginning and no end, into the darkness, into the light, and back again. Thea-logy, reflection on the meaning of Goddess, emerges from and takes root in a woman’s embodied experience, inspiring others to join the dance.
Download or read book Baby You are My Religion written by Marie Cartier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baby, You Are My Religion argues that American butch-femme bar culture of the mid-20th Century should be interpreted as a sacred space for its community. Before Stonewall—when homosexuals were still deemed mentally ill—these bars were the only place where many could have any community at all. Baby, You are My Religion explores this community as a site of a lived corporeal theology and political space. It reveals that religious institutions such as the Metropolitan Community Church were founded in such bars, that traditional and non-traditional religious activities took place there, and that religious ceremonies such as marriage were often conducted within the bars by staff. Baby, You are My Religion examines how these bars became not only ecclesiastical sites but also provided the fertile ground for the birth of the struggle for gay and lesbian civil rights before Stonewall.

Download or read book I Will Survive written by Gloria Gaynor and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-03-11 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Will Survive is the story of Gloria Gaynor, America's "Queen of Disco." It is the story of riches and fame, despair, and finally salvation. Her meteoric rise to stardom in the mid-1970s was nothing short of phenomenal, and hits poured forth that pushed her to the top of the charts, including "Honey Bee," "I Got You Under My Skin," "Never Can Say Goodbye," and the song that has immortalized her, "I Will Survive," which became a #1 international gold seller. With that song, Gloria heralded the international rise of disco that became synonymous with a way of life in the fast lane - the sweaty bodies at Studio 54, the lines of cocaine, the indescribable feeling that you could always be at the top of your game and never come down. But down she came after her early stardom, and problems followed in the wake, including the death of her mother, whose love had anchored the young singer, as well as constant battles with weight, drugs, and alcohol. While her fans always imagined her to be rich, her personal finances collapsed due to poor management; and while many envied her, she felt completely empty inside. In the early 1980s, sustained by her marriage to music publisher Linwood Simon, Gloria took three years off and reflected upon her life. She visited churches and revisited her mother's old Bible. Discovering the world of gospel, she made a commitment to Christ that sustains her to this day.
Download or read book Queering the American Dream written by Angela Yarber and published by . This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chalky remains of a life cut short filled my hands as I watched my faith slip through the cracks between my fingers. As ordained clergy, I've officiated a lot of funerals. For fourteen years, I shaped burnt ash across congregants' foreheads each year before Lent and reminded them that we all come from dust. To dust we shall return. This day, as I officiated my little brother's funeral, I held the ashes of his body in my bare hands. I'd never done this with anyone else's remains, but I wanted to somehow touch him one last time, to feel his pain and let his torment fall through my fingers, as fragments of his bones clung to my palms. Duster to dust. Computer duster killed my brother. The chalky remains of a life cut short filled my hands as I watched my faith slip through the cracks between my fingers. The winds of early March whipped through my grandfather's muscadine vineyard, the place where my brother and I played hide-and-seek throughout our childhood, the sugary scent of late Georgia summer tickling our noses as we ran and swatted mosquitoes. The farm had been a place of solace for both of us and remained so into adulthood, as a tattered family riddled with divorce, addiction, and abuse cobbled together picnic tables long enough to fit all the extended relatives at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now, we memorialized my thirty-three-year-old brother, as my ninety-year-old grandfather sat small in a folding chair with the scarves, blankets, and coats of all five of his children heaped upon his tiny frame. If it weren't for the death and sadness, the sight of our frail patriarch peeking out from under mounds of outerwear would have been quite comical. You see, my little brother, Carl, was not religious. In fact, he was anti-religious. He embodied his disdain for organized religion with a profound love for the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. As I am a professor of religion, Carl could hold his own with me when discussing world religions, and I would dare say he knew more about Christian history, scripture, and theology than most people who profess the faith. This was in large part because my brother was an intelligent critical thinker, and in small part because he deplored the way most churches treated his queer big sister. But organized religions were not for Carl, so he opted to study and parody them with the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Started as a protest against right-wing discrimination, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster holds a light-hearted view of religion and jokingly calls its adherents "pastafarians." So, the colander is a highly esteemed satirical symbol. You know. Because it drains pasta. In addition to omitting any references to god throughout his funeral, I also opted to wear the colander on my head, passing it around whenever anyone wanted to share a memory or a word of comfort. This probably seems blasphemous to many. As an ordained clergywoman, I think it's pretty damn funny.
