Book excerpt: Not too far away from the flea markets, dusty attics, cluttered used record stores and Ebay is the world of the vinyl junkies. Brett Milano dives deep into the piles of old vinyl to uncover the subculture of record collecting. A vinyl junkie is not the person who has a few old 45s shoved in the cuboard from their days in high school. Vinyl Junkies are the people who will travel over 3,000 miles to hear a rare b-side by a German band that has only recorded two songs since 1962, vinyl junkies are the people who own every copy of every record produced by the favorite artist from every pressing and printing in existance, vinyl junkies are the people who may just love that black plastic more than anything else in their lives. Brett Milano traveled the U.S. seeking out the most die-hard and fanatical collectors to capture all that it means to be a vinyl junkie. Includes interviews with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Peter Buck from R.E.M and Robert Crumb, creator of Fritz the cat and many more underground comics.

Book An Ordinary Life

Download or read book An Ordinary Life written by Charles Alaimo and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bye Nonna," I whispered again, and touched her arm just above the bed sheet. I gazed at her one final time, and like those summer days I spent memorizing her features and the sound of her voice, I studied her this time too. I felt I would soon need all those memories. I left the room not fully realizing this was the last time I would see her alive. An Ordinary Life occurs between birth and death. As he experiences the final days of his grandfather's life, author Charles J. Alaimo relives another painful chapter in his memory-the death of his grandmother, Nonna Maria, nineteen years earlier. Through her life, faith, and the courage with which she battles cancer, this simple Sicilian grandmother has a profound effect on her young grandson, changing his life forever. An Ordinary Life gives us hope that, despite death, our loved ones remain with us, guiding us through life's journey.

Book excerpt: Many times in my adult life, I have had what I would call an "awake out-of-body experience." During these times, I was peeking in at my life in a dream state; thinking this cannot be my life. I found myself asking the questions of what happened to the child who outsmarted the world and what happened to the teen who had all the answers and confidence to boot, and the young adult who never settled for can't. Well, somewhere along the way, the only thing left of who I was once was, were just shreds of an almost non-existent life. Now, don't get me wrong, there were some good times along the way, but it certainly was not always smooth sailing. But what came later in life was no comparison to the early years. Not that long ago, my life was filled with disappointment, brokenness, worry, anxiety, and fear. I survived breakups and breakdowns, sadness and pain, grief and loss beyond description, all of which led to a one-way ticket to Depression Central. Getting off the road to depression was very difficult for me, but there is no job too hard for God. If you can relate to the paralyzing despair that I went through, then please know that I fellowship with you and understand the grip depression and anxiety can have on your life. However, I want you to know that your destination does not have to be a one-way ticket to the land of despair, instead, your journey can bring you to a place of joy and peace if you simply trust and believe in God.

Book Sterling Place

  • ISBN : 1450021999
  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Sterling Place written by Ray Garcia and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of December 16, 1960, a TWA Lockheed Constellation plane and a United Airlines, a DC-8, collided in a blinding snowstorm over New York. At the time of the accident it was considered the worst aviation disaster in the history of commercial flying. When it was over, one hundred and twenty eight people from both planes, plus six on the ground had lost their lives. After the collision the Connie broke into three parts, hurling forty-four people to their death. The plane or what was left of it, crashed in the fields of the Miller Army Base, in Staten Island, New York. The other plane, United Flight 826, with eighty-four people crashed eight miles from impact coming down on an intersection called Seventh Avenue, and Sterling Place, a quiet community in the Park Slope Section of Brooklyn. On May 9th 1962, the Civil Aeronautic Board determined that the probable cause of this accident was that United Flight 826 proceeded beyond its clearance limit and the confines of the airspace to the flight given by Air Traffic Control, passing its holding pattern and therefore, ramming into TWA Flight 266. I wasn’t totally convinced. In 1998, I decided to investigate, the probable cause of the collision, and why it happened, but most important, if it could have been prevented. My investigation revealed that while Captain Robert H. Sawyer went beyond his allocated airspace, he did not stand alone in the blame. The results were very disturbing, the collision could have been prevented. The book reveals who was at fault, why there was a cover-up, and by whom.

Book The Honey Bus

Download or read book The Honey Bus written by Meredith May and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extraordinary story of a girl, her grandfather and one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee. Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. She was five years old, her parents had recently split and suddenly she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees. May turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of neurosis and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature. The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. Part memoir, part beekeeping odyssey, The Honey Bus is an unforgettable story about finding home in the most unusual of places, and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life.

Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. It wasn’t until she got sober and went to an open mic with a friend did she realize that she not only still wanted to write songs, she needed to. Today, Gauthier is a decorated musical artist, with numerous awards and recognition for her songwriting, including a Grammy nomination. In Saved by a Song, Mary Gauthier pulls the curtain back on the artistry of songwriting. Part memoir, part philosophy of art, part nuts and bolts of songwriting, her book celebrates the redemptive power of song to inspire and bring seemingly different kinds of people together.

Book Popular Music and Parenting

Download or read book Popular Music and Parenting written by Shelley Brunt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular Music and Parenting explores the culture of popular music as a shared experience between parents, carers and young children. Offering a critical overview of this topic from a popular music studies perspective, this book expands our assumptions about how young audiences and caregivers engage with music together. Using both case studies and wider analysis, the authors examine music listening and participation between children and parents in both domestic and public settings, ranging across children's music media, digital streaming, live concerts, formal and informal popular music education, music merchandising and song lyrics. Placing young children’s musical engagement in the context of the music industry, changing media technologies, and popular culture, Popular Music and Parenting paints a richly interdisciplinary picture of the intersection of popular music with the parent–child relationship.
