Book excerpt: Ben Ripley enrolls in ski school, where the slopes, and the stakes, get really steep in this bestselling follow-up to the Edgar Award-nominated Spy School, Spy Camp, and Evil Spy School. Thirteen-year-old Ben Ripley is not exactly the best student spy school has ever seen--he keeps flunking Advanced Self Preservation. But outside of class, Ben is pretty great at staying alive. His enemies have kidnapped him, shot at him, locked him in a room with a ticking time bomb, and even tried to blow him up with missiles. And he's survived every time. After all that unexpected success, the CIA has decided to activate Ben for real. The Mission: Become friends with Jessica Shang, the daughter of a suspected Chinese crime boss, and find out all of her father's secrets. Jessica wants to go to ski school in the Rocky Mountains, so a select few spy school students are going skiing too--under cover, of course. Ben might not be able to handle a weapon (or a pair of skis), but he can make friends easy peasy. That is, until his best friend from home drops in on the trip and jeopardizes the entire mission...

Book The Greek Dream

Book excerpt: The Greek Dream Inspired by Actual Events The novel deals with certain historical subjects: the desperate fate of Greek communists who sought refuge in Eastern Bloc countries after the Greek civil war in 1949, the general atmosphere during the Cold War, the murderous activities of the terrorist organization, November 17 operating in Greece until 2002, which managed to kill the CIA station chief in 1975. This story, inspired by those realities, depicts how tension and moral considerations emerge in the late 1970s as the CIA in Athens joins with Greek officials to track down the terrorists. The principal characters are Barbara Baldwin, an American Embassy wife in Athens, who, as a result of a ski trip to Bulgaria with her children becomes emotionally involved with the fate of a Bulgarian officer and tries to stake out a place for herself as an operative, perhaps putting her child in danger; Ivan Dimitrov, a Bulgarian officer of Greek origin assigned as attache to the Bulgarian Embassy in Athens, who longs for repatriation to Greece or defection to the United States and becomes a target of November 17; Dana Franklin, the CIA station chief accredited to the American Embassy in Athens, who uses Dimitrov as a double agent; and Robert Baldwin (Barbara's husband), the political officer posted to the American Embassy in Athens. Each of these people is in danger of compromising the other by dint of national concerns and sheer personal ambition. The settings, Greece and Bulgaria, fascinating Balkan countries, offer a dramatic context for the themes that develop in the course of the novel.

Book excerpt: Change the way you ski with this accessible, step-by-step classic skiing guide—part of the bestselling Inner Game series, with more than one million copies sold! “Tim Gallwey is one of the great teachers of our time.”—Peter M. Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization Have you been searching for a way to overcome your fear, trust your instincts, and ski to your greatest potential? Inner Skiing will help you do all this and more. In this updated edition of the skiing classic, W. Timothy Gallwey and Robert Kriegel offer advice on and examples of how to gain the “inner” self-confidence needed to ski well and have fun on the slopes. From understanding basic terminology and learning how to fall to nailing black diamond runs, Inner Skiing will help you: • Focus on each step of a particular technique—like the parallel turn—then put it all together so the motion seems effortless. • Analyze your fears to distinguish between healthy fear and unnecessary fear that you can overcome. • Achieve “breakthrough” runs in which you experience natural and coordinated movements. • Move to the next level in your skiing ability and feel in control on the slopes. Gallwey and Kriegel are two of the leading innovators in sports, and this revised edition refines the techniques they have perfected over their long careers. Their easy-to-follow examples and anecdotes will help skiers of all abilities—from beginner to expert.
