Book excerpt: Life will never be the same for Meg Langslow after family secrets are revealed, introducing a whole new layer of intrigue in Donna Andrews's beloved series. Meg's long-lost paternal grandfather, Dr. Blake, has hired Stanley Denton to find her grandmother Cordelia. Dr. Blake was reunited with his family when he saw Meg's picture—she's a dead ringer for Cordelia—and now Stanley has found a trail to his long-lost love in a small town less than an hour's drive away. He convinces Meg to come with him to meet her, but unfortunately, the woman they meet is Cordelia's cousin—Cordelia died several years ago, and the cousin suspects she was murdered by her long-time neighbor. Stanley and Meg agree to help track down the killer and get justice for Cordelia. Grandfather even has perfect cover--he will come to stage a rescue of the feral emus and ostriches (escaped from an abandoned farm) that infest this town. He dashes off to organize the rescue—which will, of course, involve most of Meg's family and friends in Caerphilly. But then, the evil neighbor is murdered, and not only Cordelia's cousin but also the entire contingent of emu-rescuers, who have had conflict with the neighbor, are suspects. Only Meg and the cousin—who seems to share a lot of telling traits with Meg—can find the real killer and clear the air in The Good, the Bad, and the Emus, the newest beverage-spittingly funny installment in this uproarious series from the one-and-only Donna Andrews.

Download or read book A Comprehensive Manchu English Dictionary written by Jerry Norman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Norman’s Comprehensive Manchu–English Dictionary, a substantial revision and enlargement of his Concise Manchu–English Lexicon of 1978, now long out of print, is poised to become the standard English-language resource on the Manchu language. As the dynastic language of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), Manchu was used in official documents and was also the vehicle for an enormous translation literature, mostly from the Chinese. The newDictionary, based exclusively on Qing sources, retains all of the information from the earlier Lexicon, but also includes hundreds of additional entries cited from original Manchu texts, enhanced cross-references, and an entirely new introduction on Manchu pronunciation and script. All content from the earlier publication has also been verified. This final book from the preeminent Manchu linguist in the English-speaking world is a reference work that not only updates Norman’s earlier scholarship but also summarizes his decades of study of the Manchu language. The Dictionary, which represents a significant scholarly contribution to the field of Inner Asian studies and to all students and scholars of Manchu and other Tungusic and related languages around the world, will become a major tool for archival research on Chinese late imperial period history and government.

Download or read book The Currency of Ideas written by Kathleen R. McNamara and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the states of Europe agreed to create an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a single European currency? What will decide the fate of this bold project? This book explains why monetary integration has deepened in Europe from the Bretton Woods era to the present day. McNamara argues that the development of a neoliberal economic policy consensus among European leaders in the years after the first oil crisis was crucial to stability in the European Monetary System and progress towards EMU. She identifies two factors, rising capital mobility and changing ideas about the government's proper role in monetary policymaking, as critical to the neoliberal consensus but warns that unresolved social tensions in this consensus may provoke a political backlash against EMU and its neoliberal reforms.McNamara's findings are relevant not only to European monetary integration, but to more general questions about the effects of international capital flows on states. Although this book delineates a range of constraints created by economic interdependence, McNamara rejects the notion that international market forces simply dictate government policy choice. She demonstrates that the process of neoliberal policy change is a historically dependent one, shaped by policymakers' shared beliefs and interpretations of their experiences in the global economy.
Download or read book Tiger King written by Joe Exotic and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Exotic, star of the Netflix original documentary that “consumed the pop-cultural imagination” (The Atlantic) and transfixed a nation in the midst of a global crisis, opens up about his outlandish journey from Midwestern farmer to infamous Tiger King, and finally, to federal inmate. Shortly after his arrest (for charges including hiring a hitman to murder his rival, Carole Baskin), Joe Exotic began keeping a daily journal of his life behind prison walls. In support of his defense, Joe began writing everything he wished he could tell a jury of his peers. Little did Joe know that mere months later, the self-proclaimed “gun-toting, gay redneck with a mullet” would become one of the most famous men in the world. Written entirely while incarcerated, this no-holds-barred memoir is Joe Exotic’s first, and maybe only, chance to tell his side of the story—the full story. Despite never having seen Tiger King, Joe is aware of what’s been said about him, and he’s eager to answer all the questions the world is dying to know. Such as: -The origin of the mullet. -How Joe became the Tiger King. -Joe’s favorite animals. -Joe’s relationships. -Joe’s explanation of all charges against him. -What happened with Trump’s pardon. -What he thinks about caging animals now that he lives in a cage. -What Joe has to say now about Carole Baskin. From his tragic childhood riddled with abuse to his dangerous feuds with big cat rivals and beyond, nothing is off the table. This is the exclusive and definitive read for anyone who binged the “riveting” (Vanity Fair) documentary and finished it hungry for more. A memoir unlike any other, it proves that they can cage the Tiger King, but they can’t silence his roar.

Download or read book Always Remembered Never Forgotten written by E. S. Tasker and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his effort of further stressing the need for today’s law enforcement, the author of Rocks and Bottles has continued in the same vein by writing Always Remembered, Never Forgotten. It is a compilation of situations that he and other officers faced while working in law enforcement over a period of thirty years. When reading each of the incidents, it is hoped that you, the reader, will better appreciate the responsibilities shouldered by the men and women who represent their communities by wearing the badge. He hopes to convey that while those in law enforcement have each accepted the responsibilities that accompany the job, they elected to do so freely as others have done before them. Each one of them recognize that each day they go to work, there will be perils, and for some, it could be the day that they’re asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. They must always be remembered and never forgotten. Sadly, though, a culture has developed within today’s society that when hearing of an officer being killed in the line of duty, nothing is felt at all—no remorse, no sense of loss, nothing. Many identify the news as part of our everyday life and an accepted part of our culture—something that’s simply another news item. The time has come for our society to come to its senses and realize that the only thing separating our civilization as we know it from falling into a state of anarchy is our law enforcement. We must never forget that these individuals who are willing to give their lives for us are people too. They’re not only numbers, but they’re also that segment of our society that, when needed in times of trouble, always responds to the call.
