Book excerpt: Known for his rousing speeches and military triumphs, General George S. Patton, Jr. is one of the most famous military figures in U.S. history. Yet, he is better known for his profanity than his prayers. Until now. In his new book George S. Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer, author Michael Keane takes readers on a journey through Patton’s career in three parts: his military prowess, his inspirational bravery, and his faith. Using Patton’s own diaries, speeches, and personal papers, Keane examines the general’s actions and personality to shed light on his unique and paradoxical persona. From his miraculous near-death experience to his famous prayer for fair weather, Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer recounts the seminal events that contributed to Patton’s personal and religious beliefs. Comprehensive and inspiring, Patton: Blood, Guts, and Prayer is an extraordinary look at the public and private life of one of World War II's most storied generals.

Download or read book The Robert Hall Diaries 1947 1953 Routledge Revivals written by Alec Cairncross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Roberthall was economic adviser to a succession of Labour and Conservative governments from 1947 to 1961. During that time, he served under eight Chancellors and exercised more influence on economic policy than perhaps any other official. Fortunately – though it was contrary to Civil Service rules – he kept a diary in which he documented and reflected on day-to-day events. This first volume, published in 1989, deals with the years between 1947 and 1953, in which Robert Hall acted as Director of the Economic Section and was faced with a variety of lingering uncertainties. This is a highly readable and fascinating account of what went on inside government in the post-war years. The book provides a unique picture of the relationship between Whitehall and Downing Street, and those people who shaped this challenging period in British economic history. Edited by Sir Alec Cairncross, who succeeded Lord Roberthall as Economic Adviser to HM Government in 1961, this reissue will interest any student researching policy and decision-making in the post-war period.
Download or read book Keane on Company Law written by G. Brian Hutchinson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 897 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 5th edition of Keane on Company Law is essential reading for students, solicitors and barristers alike. New Irish legislation introduces a new company law code. Under the proposed new legislation, the default company type-the new private company limited by shares (cls)-will be created. Such a company will only be required to have a minimum of one director, as opposed to two under the current law. This makes it easier for an entrepreneur to use a company to start a business on his or her own. The complex legal doctrine of ultra vires, which has applied to all companies up to now, will not apply to the new cls. Neither will a cls be required to draft a long document containing its Articles of Association. These will now be included in the Bill by default, and consequently the current requirement for lengthy complex documents at the time of incorporation of a new company can be replaced by a single-document under the proposed new law. The cls will also be permitted to hold its AGM by written procedure, rather than being compelled to gather all of the members in the same room at the same time once a year. The Bill also introduces the new concept of the Summary Approval Procedure, which will allow companies to undertake certain transactions which previously were either prohibited or required Court approval, by the new method of a special resolution combined with an appropriate declaration by the directors, subject to safeguards to prevent improper use. All these changes to Irish company legislation are covered in a practical and user-friendly structure in this book. [Subject: Irish Law, Company Law]
