Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject History - Africa, grade: 60 = B, Ahmadu Bello University (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, West Africa), course: B.A History, language: English, abstract: Education is the bedrock and key to any nation’s national development. However, with the general falling standard of education in Nigerian Public Primary and Secondary Schools, there has been the demand for more private schools to come in to compliment government efforts in the education sector through provision and delivering of high standard, quality and quantitative education. Therefore, this project work sets to analyze and explore the historical and educational reasons behind the establishment and growth private schools in Katsina State with particular reference to Katsina Metropolis and its environs, as the study is from 1980 – 2010. This is added to the fact that some proprietors of private schools have deviated from their traditional role and making money to the bedrock of establishing schools. Moreover, their proliferation has become a serious/great concern to all stakeholders. Thus, efficient method of research was applied to come up with a reliable result, in the form of conducting interviews with resource persons, as well as consulting newspapers, magazines, archival and government documents, internet among others. Thus, in the course of major finding, it was discovered that some of the people joining the business of private school believed money is bedrock. No wonder, the highest rate of examination malpractices, indiscipline and exploitation of teachers are recorded in private schools and this has crippled the role of education in national development. Consequently, all the necessary measures and proper solutions to all the stakeholders is provided in the recommendation section.

Book History of Education in Nigeria

Download or read book History of Education in Nigeria written by A. Babs Fafunwa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, a comprehensive history of Nigerian Education, from early times right through to the time of publication, had long been needed by all concerned with Education in Nigeria, students, teachers and educational administrators. No one was better qualified than Professor Fafunwa to provide such a book, and in doing so he gave due emphasis to the beginnings of Education in its three main stages of indigenous, Muslim and Christian Education. Nigerian Education had been considered all too often as a comparatively recent phenomenon, but this book points out from the start that ‘Education is as old as Man himself in Africa’ and that both Islam and Christianity were comparative newcomers in the field. A historical treatment of these three strands which have combined to make up the modern Educational system was vital to a clear understanding of what was needed for the future, and most of the first half of the book is concerned with these Educational beginnings. The imposing of a foreign colonial system on this framework did not always lead to a happy fusion of the systems, and the successes and the failures are examined in detail. There was no shortage of documentary evidence in the form of reports and statistics during the decades prior to publication, but this evidence was frequently scattered and inaccessible to the student, so that the author’s careful selection of key evidence and reports, often drawn from his own personal experience, will be invaluable for those wishing to trace the development of Education in Nigeria up to the early 1970s. A knowledge of the history and development of the Nigerian Education system, of the numerous and intensely varied personalities and beliefs which have combined and often conflicted to shape it, is indispensable to all students in colleges and universities studying to become teachers. It is this knowledge that Professor Fafunwa set out to provide, drawing on his wide experience as teacher writer and educationalist.

This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2011 in the subject History - Africa, Ahmadu Bello University, course: HISTORY, language: English, abstract: One of the neglected themes of the history of Katsina emirate, was the contribution of the Christian Missionaries to the socio-economic development of the emirate. This is true because early attempts by Christian missionaries to introduce Christianity into Katsina emirate were not accorded serious attention. Likewise in the colonial period, when the Missionaries succeeded in establishing their stations in various parts of the emirate their activities were almost overlooked by researchers and writers. This paper appreciates the nature and the significance of the Christian Missionary activities in Katsina emirate in the pre-colonial and colonial periods.
