Book excerpt: From the author of How Yoga Works, a delightful adventure tale of yoga and the ancient wisdom behind it. Friday is a young girl who lives in a tiny nomad village high in the Himalayan plains, a thousand years before our time. Yoga is just starting to reach Tibet from India, and is strictly forbidden for women. In fact, so are books—and learning to read or to write. Friday’s uncle Jampa is a quiet, wise Buddhist monk who gives classes to young monks who walk from the local monastery to his beautiful yurt, secluded within the mountains. Why does he live so alone? Why doesn’t he stay with the other monks? Uncle has a secret. Friday grows up watching Uncle teach her dear brother Tenzing the deepest knowledge of the ancient books, as he trains to become a Geshe, or Master. She secretly watches the Wisdom Warriors of the monastery at night, as they tear apart beautiful ideas, leaping in the wild dance of a debater monk. Friday hatches a daring plan to become the first woman in a thousand years to break into this secret society of wisdom and yoga. How could it ever come true? Will she succeed?

Download or read book Background Processes in the Electrostatic Spectrometers of the KATRIN Experiment written by Susanne Mertens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos continue to be the most mysterious and, arguably, the most fascinating particles of the Standard Model as their intrinsic properties such as absolute mass scale and CP properties are unknown. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed with unprecedented accuracy by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesis focusses on the spectrometer part of KATRIN and background processes therein. Various background sources such as small Penning traps, as well as nuclear decays from single radon atoms are fully characterized here for the first time. Most importantly, however, it was possible to reduce the background in the spectrometer by more than five orders of magnitude by eliminating Penning traps and by developing a completely new background reduction method by stochastically heating trapped electrons using electron cyclotron resonance (ECR). The work beautifully demonstrates that the obstacles and challenges in measuring the absolute mass scale of neutrinos can be met successfully if novel experimental tools (ECR) and novel computing methods (KASSIOPEIA) are combined to allow almost background-free tritium ß-spectroscopy.

Download or read book Catalan Maps and Jewish Books written by Katrin Kogman-Appel and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a small chapter in the intellectual history of the Jews of Majorca. Its key figure is Elisha ben Abraham Bevenisti Cresques (1325-1387) a cartographer in the service of King Peter IV of Aragon and a scribe and illuminator of Hebrew books. Elisha Cresques' career evolves at a point in time when some of the most fascinating threads of methodological interests relevant to intellectual history meet. He emerges as a hub, so to speak, where mapmaking converged with scribal work, miniature painting with scientific knowledge, and the culture of a minority with that of the majority. How he was able to negotiate his patron's expectations and his own cultural identity and frame them within the political, cultural, and religious discourses of his time is the subject of this book.
