Book excerpt: Kate Muller Chapman arrived in New Mexico at the time Santa Fe Style architecture was just developing. In the 1920s and 1930s Kate designed adobe houses, and directed local workmen during construction. Well versed in the tenets of the evolving Santa Fe Style, Kate also added her own distinctive touch to the projects. Kate Chapman skillfully directed rehabilitation projects preserving the essential historic character of nineteenth century adobes while updating and enlarging them. Two of her rehabilitations on Canyon Road are partially accessible to visitors: El Zaguan and the Borrego House. With graphic layout, linoleum cut illustrations by Stewart, and her own folksy humor, Kate combined a certain romantic spirit with recommendations that still apply to New Mexico adobe building. In 1930 Kate Chapman collaborated with her friend, artist Dorothy N. Stewart, to produce a small volume filled with practical tips about earthen architecture. First printed by Spud Johnson's Laughing Horse Press, "Adobe Notes or How to Keep the Water Out with Just Plain Mud" is reprinted and included in this book. Catherine Colby is a professional historic preservationist working in Santa Fe for over twenty years. She has a Bachelor's Degree in History and a Masters Degree in Architecture. During her career with the National Park Service Catherine researched and documented historic properties throughout the southwest. She runs a consulting business in Santa Fe, preparing National Register Nominations and reports on historic properties for their owners and for the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. She received a Heritage Preservation Award from the State of New Mexico for her role in the conservation of the Bishop Everett Jones property in Santa Fe.

Book excerpt: The acceptance of volunteered geographic information (VGI) as a valued and useful source of information for governments is growing at all levels. Put simply, VGI is “crowdsourced” geographic information provided by a wide range of participants with varying levels of education, knowledge and skills (see Michael Goodchild’s writing for the original definition of the term). While a growing body of research demonstrates the reliability and accuracy of VGI when compared to official or government produced data sets, the progression towards their adoption and wider use is slow. There are a range of mechanisms and methods available for ensuring that crowdsourced information is fit for purpose so concerns about data quality are not the major reason for the lack of adoption. Instead, organizational practices, regulations and legal issues limit the rate of change. This report is based on a six-month study of the use of VGI by government and aims to provide a guide for the successful implementation of VGI.

The site has international significance because of the extensive excavations of the Iron Age palisaded settlement and later earthen ramparts, complex gateway, and chevaux-de-frise of upright stones. It is now widely recognised that the Iron Age consisted of many regional cultural traditions, and the excavations at Castell Henllys provide a vital contrast to the well-known large hillfort communities in other parts of England and Wales as well as across Europe. As such, it is a unique window into a widespread but largely ignored site category and form of social and economic organisation. The publication will provide a case study for the construction and use of the earthworks of a major European late prehistoric settlement type – the Iron Age hillfort; the monumental construction is compared with other communal investments such as the Mississippian mounds. It will also offer an innovative form of site reporting, including alternative interpretations of the earthworks as either military defences or the community-binding symbols. Along with Excavation, Experiment and Heritage Interpretation: Castell Henllys Hillfort Then and Now, these books will be required reading by those studying the late prehistoric archaeology of Britain and Europe at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level, and by those in North America studying complex societies, monumentality and ways of writing archaeology.
