Excerpt: ... others speak instead of speaking myself; but I should lie were I to deny that the enthusiastic acclamations of a meeting numbering thousands whom I am holding as by hypnotic power and filling with my thoughts, with my feelings--that this magnetic power over a roaring sea of human beings has something wonderfully intoxicating. However, I have never forgotten the dangers of popularity; and if I remain unmoved by applause and praise--as unmoved as by the abusive language and the calumnies of our enemies-- it is an art I have learned from Marx, although it necessitated the school of a life full of struggles to hammer it into me. Politics was to Marx a study. Beer-politicians and barroom politics he viewed with deadly hate. And, indeed, is anything more devoid of sense conceivable? History is the product of all the forces active in Man and Nature and of human thought, of human passions, of human wants. But politics is, theoretically, the recognition of these millions and billions of factors busy at the 'loom of Time," and, practically, action based on this recognition. Politics is also science and applied science; and political science or science of politics is, as it were, the essence of all science, for it embraces the whole field of action of Man and Nature, which action is the goal of all science. Nevertheless every ass thinks himself a great politician or even a great statesman--as every ass thinks himself a good newspaper editor. For both purposes-- according to common belief--it is unnecessary to have learned anything; one is "born" for them, to quote Professor Sohm of Leipsic. How wild Marx could become when speaking of those hollow skulls who arrange matters for themselves with a few cant phrases and, mistaking their more or less...

  • Author : Allan Megill
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780742511668

Download or read book Karl Marx written by Allan Megill and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Karl Marx want to exclude politics and the market from his vision of a future socialism? In Karl Marx: The Burden of Reason, Allan Megill begins with this question. Megill's examination of Marx's formative writings casts new light on Marx's relation to philosophy and reveals a hitherto largely unknown 'rationalist' Marx. In demonstrating how Marx's rationalism permeated his attempts to understand politics, economics, and history generally, Megill forces the reader to rethink Marx's entire intellectual project. While Megill writes as an intellectual historian and historian of philosophy, his highly original redescription of the Marxian enterprise has important implications for how we think about the usability of Marx's work today. Karl Marx: The Burden of Reason will be of interest to those who wish to reflect on the fate of Marxism during the era of Soviet Communism. It will also be of interest to those who wish to discern what is living and what is dead, what is adequate and what requires replacement or supplementation, in the work of a figure who, in spite of everything, remains one of the greatest philosophers and social scientists of the modern world.

Book Karl Marx s Life Ideas and Influences

Download or read book Karl Marx s Life Ideas and Influences written by Shaibal Gupta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the latest crisis of capitalism broke out in 2008, Marx has been back in fashion, and sometimes it seems that his ideas have never been as topical, or as commanding of respect and interest, as they are today. This edited collection arises from one of the largest international conferences dedicated to the bicentenary of Marx’s birth. The volume contains 16 chapters authored by globally renowned scholars and is divided into two parts: I) On the Critique of Politics; II) On the Critique of Political Economy. These contributions, from multiple academic disciplines, offer diverse perspectives on why Marx is still so relevant for our times and make this book a source of great appeal for both expert scholars of Marx as well as students and general readers who are approaching his theories for the first time.

Download or read book Karl Marx written by Robin Small and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to Karl Marx (1818–1883) as a radical educational thinker. Marx’s own schooling and education are examined and we see how his interest in educational issues was informed by his own experience. Educational themes in Marx’s thinking are identified: the role of education within capitalist society, the contribution of education to human development and the character of education in a future society. These are placed in a historical setting by the author and related to public debates over educational policy. Throughout his career, Marx identified education as key to the prospects of the working class. The story of this engagement adds a new dimension to the picture of his work as a philosopher, political economist and socialist revolutionary. The aspects of education that concerned Marx matched prominent features of his theoretical and political activity, and educational themes provided him with a critical application for many of his most important ideas. The author explores Marx’s work on the British factory school system, his use of evidence from the reports of school inspectors, and the contemporary movement that led to the establishment of modern systems of public schooling. The final chapter relates Marx’s thinking to questions about the place of education in today’s society, showing how relevant it is for the twenty-first century. These discussions contain new scholarship, draw on original sources and are written in a clear and readable style. Students in education courses at universities and colleges, educational researchers and teachers will find this examination of Karl Marx’s ideas concerning education both engaging and enlightening.

Book The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx

Download or read book The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx written by Alex Callinicos and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2012-01-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the author of Capital and coauthor of The Communist Manifesto, with a focus on his relevance in today’s world. Few thinkers have been declared irrelevant and out-of-date with such frequency as Karl Marx. Hardly a decade has gone by since his death in which establishment critics have not announced the death of his theory. And yet, despite their best efforts to bury him, Marx’s specter continues to haunt his detractors more than a century after his passing. As the boom and bust cycle of global capitalism continues to widen inequality around the world, a new generation is discovering that the problems Marx addressed in his time are remarkably similar to those of our own. In this engaging and accessible introduction, Alex Callinicos demonstrates that Marx’s ideas hold an enduring relevance for today’s activists fighting against poverty, oppression, environmental destruction, and the numerous other injustices of the capitalist system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Karl Marx Biographical Memoirs Better is the enemy of Good is an old com monplace, but like most commonplaces, it never theless contains a truth, behind which I retire for shelter in presenting the following little book. A hundred times I have been asked to write about Marx and my personal relations to him, but I have always declined to do so. And declined from - how shall I call it? - a certain holy awe - or how shall I express myself more correctly 'i - from reverence of Marx. N oblesse oblige. And a Marx imposes weighty obliga tions. Could I do him justice? Had I the abil ity? Had I the time? Under the continually growing pressure of work I was condemned to haste, to superficial working. And a eulogistic daubery, with Marx for its object, that would be an insulting lack of respect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
