Book Circle of Love

Download or read book Circle of Love written by Karen S. Camara and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 1956 when Michael and Karen first met as teens in the streets of New York City. They were both determined to escape their dysfunctional families, buoyed up by dreams of success. Their four years as soulmates would have been forever except Michael was addicted to heroin. After walking away, Karen buried all her feelings from the pure joy of their love to her dismay of drugs as a third partner yet she still lived with the heartbreak of going separate ways. When Karen realized her history as a New York City street kid was atypical, she wrote a memoir, Songs from the Street: A Native New Yorker Comes of Age in the Fifties. She reveals how writing this memoir unleashed powerful memories of her teenage love as well as a curiosity about what happened to Michael after they parted. Karen sought closure and describes how she found Michael, now clean, sober, and professionally accomplished. Through this reconnection, their love was reborn and their life together as soulmates came full circle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars in COVID Times documents the new and innovative forms of scholarship, community collaboration, and teaching brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this volume, Melissa Castillo Planas and Debra A. Castillo bring together a diverse range of texts, from research-based studies to self-reflective essays, to reexamine what it means to be a publicly engaged scholar in the era of COVID. Between social distancing, masking, and remote teaching—along with the devastating physical and emotional tolls on individuals and families—the disruption of COVID-19 in academia has given motivated scholars an opportunity (or necessitated them) to reconsider how they interact with and inspire students, conduct research, and continue collaborative projects. Addressing a broad range of factors, from anti-Asian racism to pedagogies of resilience and escapism, digital pen pals to international performance, the essays are connected by a flexible, creative approach to community engagement as a core aspect of research and teaching. Timely and urgent, but with long-term implications and applications, Scholars in COVID Times offers a heterogeneous vision of scholarly and pedagogical innovation in an era of contestation and crisis.

Book Creating an Empire of Informers

Download or read book Creating an Empire of Informers written by Poppy Tushingham and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, many states have attempted to harness the attention of their populations for their own ends. This study argues that the Assyrian Empire in the year 672 BC is such a case. In 672 BC, Esarhaddon, King of Assyria, imposed a succession covenant (adê) on his subjects, the inhabitants of the Assyrian Empire. This covenant required the empire's population to monitor one another, and themselves, for signs of disloyalty to the monarch and his chosen successor, Ashurbanipal. This study examines the aims and outcomes, desired and undesired, of imposing this duty of vigilance across the Assyrian Empire. To consider the presentation and implementation of this duty of vigilance, the study draws largely on evidence supplied by the covenant and other royally-commissioned texts. To examine the outcomes of the covenant's enactment, meanwhile, it explores cuneiform sources, such as letters to the crown, private legal documents, and literary compositions, as well as the Aramaic Story of Ahiqar and the biblical Book of Deuteronomy. By providing a sustained analysis of the real-world implications and outcomes of the covenant, this book sheds new light on a text that fundamentally altered the political makeup of the Assyrian Empire.
