Book Immanuel Kant Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals

Download or read book Immanuel Kant Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals written by Immanuel Kant and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1785, the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals is one of the most powerful texts in the history of ethical thought. In this book, Immanuel Kant formulates and justifies a supreme principle of morality that issues universal and unconditional moral commands. These commands receive their normative force from the fact that rational agents autonomously impose the moral law upon themselves. As such, they are laws of freedom. This volume contains the first facing-page German-English edition of Kant's Groundwork. It presents an authentic edition of the German text and a carefully revised version of Mary Gregor's acclaimed English translation, as well as editorial notes and a full bilingual index. It will be the edition of choice for any student or scholar who is not content with reading this central contribution to modern moral philosophy through the veil of English translation.

Book Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals

Download or read book Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals written by Immanuel Kant and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation of Immanuel Kant’s 1785 Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals in modern American English with the original German in the back. This is Volume V in the Complete Works of Kant from Newcomb Livraria Press. Kant’s 1785 Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals is the union of the Critique of Pure Reason and his theoretical Natural Philosophy. It is a work of pure moral philosophy, at least his clearest, and is an architectonic framework for ethical action. Here in Groundwork, we see the development of the "maxim" of an action, or the subjective principle of volition, critical to the intellectual project of the "Kategorischen Imperatives. Morality arises from the individual’s self-legislation of practical reason and is universal and normative for all rational agents. This raised a formidable moral theory against Hume and the English Empiricists who promoted moral sense and teleological moral theories and would dominate the Philosophic world for a century. Still today, the Categorical Imperative has not been discredited and remains a central concept in modern ethics."

Book Kant s Lectures Kants Vorlesungen

Download or read book Kant s Lectures Kants Vorlesungen written by Bernd Dörflinger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although they were not written by Kant himself, the transcripts of his lectures constitute an important source for philosophical research today. Some of the contributions presented in this volume discuss the authenticity and significance of these transcripts, for example the status of Kant's lectures on logic and anthropology, while others shed light on the historical formation of specific writings, for instance the texts on the philosophy of religion. The contributions provide new insights into Kant's philosophy, that, if looking at Kant's published writings alone, we would not be able to gain. In a number of cases, a critical analysis of Kant's lectures gives us a better understanding of his published works. Thus his lectures on metaphysics shed new light on his Critique of Pure Reason, while the lecture on natural law is a valuable source for the understanding of his published legal writings.

Book The Scope of Autonomy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katerina Deligiorgi
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-05-31
  • ISBN : 0191631272
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Scope of Autonomy written by Katerina Deligiorgi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katerina Deligiorgi offers a contemporary defence of autonomy that is Kantian in orientation but which engages closely with recent arguments about agency, morality, and practical reasoning. Autonomy is a key concept in contemporary moral philosophy with deep roots in the history of the subject. However, there is still no agreed view about the correct way to formulate an account of autonomy that adequately captures both our capacity for self-determination and our responsiveness to reasons. The theory defended in The Scope of Autonomy is distinctive in two respects. First, whereas autonomy has primarily been understood in terms of our relation to ourselves, Deligiorgi shows that it also centrally involves our relation to others. Identifying the intersubjective dimension of autonomy is crucial for the defence of autonomy as a morality of freedom. Second, autonomy must be treated as a composite concept and hence not capturable in simple definitions such as acting on one's higher order desires or on principles one endorses. One of the virtues of the composite picture is that it shows autonomy lying at the intersection of concerns with morality, practical rationality, and freedom. Autonomy pertains to all these areas, though it does not exactly coincide with any of them. Proving this, and so tracing the scope of autonomy, is therefore essential: Deligiorgi shows that autonomy is theoretically plausible, psychologically realistic, and morally attractive.

Book Agency and Autonomy in Kant s Moral Theory

Download or read book Agency and Autonomy in Kant s Moral Theory written by Andrews Reath and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrews Reath presents a selection of his best essays on various features of Kant's moral psychology and moral theory, with particular emphasis on his conception of rational agency and his conception of autonomy. The opening essays explore different elements of Kant's views about motivation, including his account of respect for morality as the distinctive moral motive and his view of the principle of happiness as a representation of the shared structure of non-moral choice. These essays stress the unity of Kant's moral psychology by arguing that moral and non-moral considerations motivate in essentially the same way. Several of the essays develop an original approach to Kant's conception of autonomy that emphasizes the political metaphors found throughout Kant's writings on ethics. They argue that autonomy is best interpreted not as a psychological capacity, but as a kind of sovereignty: in claiming that moral agents have autonomy, Kant regards them as a kind of sovereign legislator with the power to give moral law through their willing. The final essays explore some of the implications of this conception of autonomy elsewhere in Kant's moral thought, arguing that his Formula of Universal Law uses this conception of autonomy to generate substantive moral principles and exploring the connection between Kantian self-legislation and duties to oneself. The collection offers revised versions of several previously published essays, as well as two new papers, 'Autonomy of the Will as the Foundation of Morality' and 'Agency and Universal Law'. It will be of interest to all students and scholars of Kant, and to many moral philosophers.

Book Kants ethischer Autonomiebegriff

Download or read book Kants ethischer Autonomiebegriff written by Ana-Carolina Gutiérrez-Xivillé and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Kant s Tugendlehre written by Andreas Trampota and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the results of the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant finally published his system of moral philosophy in two volumes in 1797. By then, he had been planning to write a Metaphysics of Morals for three decades; but only the title remained unchanged while the basic principles of his theoretical and practical philosophy changed dramatically. While for many years academic moral philosophy focused mainly on Kant’s earlier ethical treatises, there has recently been much interest in this later and perhaps more mature work on moral philosophy, particularly the ethical part of the Metaphysics of Morals, the “Metaphysical Principles of the Doctrine of Virtue” or “Tugendlehre”. The present volume responds to these demands. Following a series of research workshops, 18 scholars from Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States provide a seamless commentary on the “Doctrine of Virtue”, discussing topics such as suicide, truthfulness, moral perfection, beneficence, gratitude, sympathy, respect and friendship as well as Kant’s moral psychology, philosophy of action and theory of moral education. This book will be an invaluable resource for moral philosophers and Kant scholars alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the concepts of individual autonomy and political liberalism have been the subjects of intense debate, but these discussions have occurred largely within separate academic disciplines. Autonomy and the Challenges to Liberalism contains essays devoted to foundational questions regarding both the notion of the autonomous self and the nature and justification of liberalism. Written by leading figures in moral, legal and political theory, the volume covers inter alia the following topics: the nature of the self and its relation to autonomy, the social dimensions of autonomy and the political dynamics of respect and recognition, and the concept of autonomy underlying the principles of liberalism.
