Book Aegean Sponge Fishing and the Island of Kalymnos 19th 20th Centuries

Download or read book Aegean Sponge Fishing and the Island of Kalymnos 19th 20th Centuries written by Evdokia Olympitou and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-10-02 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the invention of synthetic sponges, divers culled the seabeds of the Aegean for animal sponges, or "sea gold", to supply global demand, while risking paralysis or death from decompression disease. This is a study of sponge diving and the impact of the industry on the inhabitants of Kalymnos and the Mediterranean. It is a record of the 10,000 divers who died, the 20,000 who were paralysed between 1886 and 1910, and the women who were there to sustain them when they returned home.

Book An island in Prehistory Neolithic and Bronze Ages finds from Kalymnos Dodecanese

Download or read book An island in Prehistory Neolithic and Bronze Ages finds from Kalymnos Dodecanese written by Mario Benzi and published by All’Insegna del Giglio. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest prehistoric excavations on the island took place in 1887, when W.R. Paton discovered Mycenaean chamber tombs in the side of the torrent bed, which runs into the harbour of Pothia to the east of the hill of Perakastro, where the Late Bronze Age settlement stood. Most of the vessels found from Paton were presented to the British Museum while others are preserved in other European Museums. The first systematic excavations, however, took place only in the early twenties of the past century when the Italian archaeologist A. Maiuri director of the archaeological exploration of the then Italian islands of the Dodecanese, excavated the three prehistoric caves of Ayia Varvara (1920), Choiromandres (1921), and Vathy-Dhaskalio (1922), which are the object of the present study.

Book Secrets from the Greek Kitchen

Download or read book Secrets from the Greek Kitchen written by David E. Sutton and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets from the Greek Kitchen explores how cooking skills, practices, and knowledge on the island of Kalymnos are reinforced or transformed by contemporary events. Based on more than twenty years of research and the author’s videos of everyday cooking techniques, this rich ethnography treats the kitchen as an environment in which people pursue tasks, display expertise, and confront culturally defined risks. Kalymnian islanders, both women and men, use food as a way of evoking personal and collective memory, creating an elaborate discourse on ingredients, tastes, and recipes. Author David E. Sutton focuses on micropractices in the kitchen, such as the cutting of onions, the use of a can opener, and the rolling of phyllo dough, along with cultural changes, such as the rise of televised cooking shows, to reveal new perspectives on the anthropology of everyday living.

Book excerpt: * A Poetry Book Society Recommendation 2016* 'When we climb alone en cordée feminine, we are magicians of the Alps – we make the routes we follow disappear' The poems of Helen Mort's second collection offer an unforgettable perspective on the heights we scale and the distances we run, the routes we follow and the paths we make for ourselves. Here are odes to the women who dared to break new ground – from Miss Jemima Morrell, a young Victorian woman from Yorkshire who hiked the Swiss Peaks in her skirts and petticoats, to the modern British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who died descending from the summit of K2. Distinctive and courageous, these are poems of passion and precipices, of edges and extremes. No Map Could Show Them confirms Helen Mort’s position as one of the finest young poets at work today.
