Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This significant volume is the first to present in detail the entire prolific vocal repertoire of the late-Romantic German composer Max Reger. The Songs of Max Reger: A Guide and Study begins with a brief introduction discussing the development of German Lied, then journeys through this creative composer's works for voice and piano. With many musical examples, Richard Mercier and Donald Nold present a survey and discussion of Reger's lifetime of song output. The book proceeds through the songs chronologically by opus number, discussing each individually. All entries include details pertinent to the song's particular poem, its musical setting, the date of musical composition, the vocal range required, and discussion of specific vocal and pianistic features. The text also provides the original German poem, word-for-word English translation of the German text, IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) pronunciation symbols for the German, and a prose version of the poetic text in English for better appreciation of the piece. An index and two appendixes complete this important reference, arranging the songs by title and poet and supplying information on vocal range, level of difficulty, and gender. Designed for the classical vocal music enthusiast and invaluable to the singer and vocal coach, this book, commemorating the 135th anniversary of the composer's birth, will also appeal to accompanists, Reger scholars, and lovers of German Lieder and German art and culture.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the work of internationally renowned scholars from Australia, Germany, Italy, South Africa, the UK and the US. The focus on W.G. Sebald’s writing as that of an expatriate author offers a fresh and productive approach to Sebald scholarship. In one way or another, all 28 essays in this innovative, bi-lingual collection take up the notion of Sebald’s experience as an expatriate writer: be it in the analysis of intertextual, transmedial and generic border crossings, on the “exposure to the other” and the experience of alterity, on the question of identity construction and performance, on affinities with other expatriate writers, on the recurring topics of “home”, “exile”, “dislocation” and “migration”, or on the continuing work of “memory” to work through and to preserve the consciousness of a destructive past that has informed the childhood as much as the adult life-world of the author.

Book The Economics of Abundance

Download or read book The Economics of Abundance written by Wolfgang Hoeschele and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No matter how many resources we consume we never seem to have enough. The Economics of Abundance is a balanced book in which Wolfgang Hoeschele challenges why this is so. He claims that our current capitalist economy can exist only on the basis of manufactured scarcity created by 'scarcity-generating institutions', and these institutions manipulate both demand and supply of commodities. Therefore demand consistently exceeds supply, and profits and economic growth can continue - at the cost of individual freedom, social equity, and ecological sustainability. The fact that continual increases in demand are so vital to our economy leads to an impasse: many people see no alternative to the generation of ever more demand, but at the same time recognize that it is clearly unsustainable ecologically and socially. So, can demand only be reduced by curtailing freedom and is this acceptable? This book argues that, by analyzing how scarcity-generating institutions work and then reforming or dismantling them, we can enhance individual freedom and support entrepreneurial initiative, and at the same time make progress toward social justice and environmental sustainability by reducing demands on vital resources. This vision would enable activists in many fields (social justice, civil liberties, and environmental protection), as well as many entrepreneurs and other members of civil society to work together much more effectively, make it more difficult to portray all these groups as contradictory special interests, and thereby help generate momentum for positive change. Meanwhile, for academics in many fields of study, the concept of the creation of scarcity or abundance may be a highly useful analytical tool.

Book Neighbours and Strangers

Download or read book Neighbours and Strangers written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 15 essays collected here focus on literary and cultural relations between Germany or Austria on the one hand and the neighbouring countries of eastern and southern Europe on the other, with particular reference to the period since the Wende, but also with a glance back to the period of German division. Topics include the overarching theme of psychological, political, historical and geographical boundaries and the perspective offered by German writers from both East and West on Poland, Russia and neighbouring countries. Equally important to the contributors are specific authors who have crossed national and cultural borders, such as Libuše Moníková, Irena Brežna, Richard Wagner and Hans Bergel. The role of memory, Vergangenheit, time and space are examined in the context of works by Anna Mitgutsch, W G Sebald, Christoph Ransmayr and Elisabeth Reichart, and the reception of the theories of Pierre Nora in the German-speaking countries. The re-emergence of the Right in politics, drama and film forms a further dimension explored in these essays. Neighbours and Strangers will be of interest to students and scholars working on contemporary German and Austrian culture.

Book Speaking the Taboo

Download or read book Speaking the Taboo written by Paul Cooke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolfgang Hilbig is a writer who is widely acknowledged as one of the most important to have emerged from the former GDR. In this study, the first in English, Paul Cooke explores the interplay of aesthetic and social ‘taboos’, as defined by the official discourse of the GDR, in a cross-section of Hilbig’s critical writing, poetry and prose. The protagonists in Hilbig’s texts suffer from a profound crisis of identity due to the disparity between the state’s official presentation of life in the East and their own experience. Cooke argues that through their exploration of the ‘taboo’, i.e. that which is excluded from the state’s official discourse, Hilbig’s characters attempt to break through the banal rhetoric of the ruling elite in order to realise an authentic sense of self.

Download or read book Alfred D blin written by Steffan Davies and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Döblin’s texts, which range widely across contemporary discourses, are paradigms of the encounter between literary and scientific modernity. With their use of ‛Tatsachenphantasie’, they explode conventional language, seeking a new connection with the world of objects and things. This volume reassesses and reevaluates the uniquely interdisciplinary quality of Döblin’s interdiscursive, factually-inspired poetics by offering challenging new perspectives on key works. The volume analyses not only some of Döblin’s best-known novels and stories, but also neglected works including his early medical essays, political journalism and autobiographical texts. Other topics addressed are Döblin’s engagement with German history; his relation to medical discourse; his topography of Berlin; his aestheticisation of his own biography and his relation to other major writers such as Heine, Benn, Brecht and Sebald. With contributions in English and in German by scholars from Germany and the United Kingdom, the volume presents insights into Döblin that are of value to advanced researchers and to students alike.

Book The Art of Recollection in Jena Romanticism

Download or read book The Art of Recollection in Jena Romanticism written by Laurie Ruth Johnson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the ways in which memory is understood and aestheticized in Romantic texts, and argues that these works reveal serious doubt about the explanatory ability of the philosophical, psychological and aesthetic discourses against which modern thought is constructed. The Jena Romantics represent the experience and presentation of memory as privileged and creative, but also as not always capable of giving reliable information about the actual past. But rather than depicting signifiers with no stable referents, their portrayal of memory and remembering as creative displays a belief that meaning is accessible through its representations. This belief results in an emphasis on originality over imitation, but also blurs distinctions between memory and historiography. The form of the fragment embodies the dilemmas and possibilities that the Romantics associate with memory. The book includes a survey of theories of memory and how they contribute to a specifically Romantic model for memory that can lead to new interpretations of Romantic fragments; chapters on eighteenth-century aesthetic and psychological theories of memory that precede and influence Romantic texts, and on understandings of memory in critical and idealist philosophy; interpretations of the poetic and philosophical production of Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel; and a conclusion that demonstrates the persistence of the Romantic model for memory in contemporary memory theory and cultural production.
