Book Rethinking Translation

Download or read book Rethinking Translation written by Lawrence Venuti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992 Rethinking Translation makes the translator’s activity more visible by using critical theory. It examines the selection of the foreign text and the implementation of translation strategies; the reception of the translated text, and the theories of translation offered by philosophers, critics and translators themselves. The book constitutes a rethinking that is both philosophical and political, taking into account social and ideological dimensions, as well as questions of language and subjectivity. Covering a number of genres and national literatures, this collection of essays demonstrates the power wielded by translators in the formation of literary canons and cultural identities, and recognises the appropriative and imperialist movements in every act of translation.

Book Tohellwithyou Mitro

Download or read book Tohellwithyou Mitro written by Kr̥shṇa Sobatī and published by Katha. This book was released on 2007 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Krishna Sobti's lively, unapologetic portrayal of a married woman who brooks no limits to her sexuality is as compelling, pertinent and provocative today as when it first shook the Hindi literary world in 1966. Katha presents another masterpiece from one of the most spirited writers of our times. Mitro Marjani was not a writer's story ... I was amazed at the surprises Mitro gave me at every turn. Brought up outside the walls of patriarchy ... Mitro is her mother's daughter who can voice her desires and get away with it. She has no inhibitions about talking of things tabooed by tradition. She really impressed me .- Krishna Sobti

Book Translation and Relevance

Download or read book Translation and Relevance written by Ernst-August Gutt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the outset, this book has evoked strong responses. Its central claim is that given a comprehensive theory of inferential communication, there is no need for a special theory of translation. This has been praised by some as "wise and right" (Dell Hymes) and condemned by others as "astonishing, not to say perverse" (Kirsten Malmkjaer). Gutt's call to move from semiotics to an inferential paradigm of communication remains a challenge for many. The debate continues and so does the demand for the book, resulting in this second edition. There is a 'Postscript' entitled 'A decade later', where the author addresses peer criticism, especially from those involved in the movement of 'translation studies', and attempts to bring out more clearly the unique mandate of translation. New perspectives, such as authenticity, are also introduced. Marginal notes, some tongue-in-cheek, liven up the discussion and new references ensure its currency.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book A Sociocritique of Translation

Download or read book A Sociocritique of Translation written by Annie Brisset and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking study, Annie Brisset attempts to extend the parameters of translation theory to encompass a consideration of ideology and history. Newly translated into English, the study was awarded the Ann Saddlemyer Prize in 1991 by the Association for Canadian Theatre History. It focuses on the translation of theatrical texts in Quebec during the years 1968-88, a period marked by the search for a national identity, when foreign works were not just translated but rather 'traduit en quebecois, ' in an effort to counteract the influence of the dominant English culture in Canada and of the colonial legacy of European French. As Brisset shows, such translation was especially apparent in the developing Quebecois theatre, for drama affords a uniquely immediate link with the collective consciousness, a link that was strengthened during this period by the rise of social realist theatre in Quebec.
