Book Advancing the Ugandan Economy

Download or read book Advancing the Ugandan Economy written by Ezra Sabiti Suruma and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal conflicts, dictatorship, and economic disintegration characterized the first twenty-five years of Uganda’s independence from British colonial rule, which culminated in the reign of Idi Amin and a violent civil war. The country has since achieved an astounding turnaround of stability and growth. Advancing the Ugandan Economy is a first-hand look at the remarkable policy changes that took place from 1986 to 2012 and their effect in contrast with the turbulent events after independence. Ezra Suruma held several key positions in the Ugandan government during the nation’s transition period, including minister of finance. His insightful recounting of those times demonstrates that African countries can achieve economic stability and sustain rapid growth when they meet at least two interdependent conditions: establishing a stable and secure political framework and unleashing entrepreneurialism. Suruma also highlights the strategic areas that still require fundamental reform if Uganda is to become a modern state and shares his vision for the future of his country. Rarely in African history has so much positive political and economic transformation of a country been achieved in such a short time. Suruma’s account of the commitment, determination, vision, and dexterity of the Ugandan government holds invaluable lessons in managing the still complex policy challenges facing the African continent.

Book Kigezi and Its People

Download or read book Kigezi and Its People written by Paul Ngologoza and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a cultural renaissance in Uganda since the early 1990s. In Buganda, Toro, Bunyoro and Busoga, traditional leaders have been restored to spearhead the revival of the cultures of their respective peoples. As part of this renaissance, Fountain Publishers has re-published this book in conjunction with the Bakiga Cultural and Educational Trust. The author, one of the distinguished sons of Kigezi who played a leading role during the colonial period, pioneered the documentation of the cultures of the present districts of Kabale, Kisoro and Rukungiri in south-west Uganda. He was born and brought up before the coming of the Europeans, and his manuscript is both a crucial source of information and a rare find. First published in 1967 in the local language, the book traces the origins of the people of Kigezi, their customs and traditions, the part played by the British and their Baganda agents in ruling Kigezi, and the coming of Christian and Moslem missionaries.

Book Farmer Innovation in Africa

Download or read book Farmer Innovation in Africa written by Chris Reij and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Africa's major untapped resources is the creativity of its farmers. This book presents a series of clear and detailed studies that demonstrate how small-scale farmers, both men and women, experiment and innovate in order to improve their livelihoods, despite the adverse conditions and lack of appropriate external support with which they have to contend. The studies are based on fieldwork in a wide variety of farming systems throughout Africa, and have been written primarily by African researchers and extension specialists. Numerous lively examples show how a participatory approach to agricultural research and development that builds on local knowledge and innovation can stimulate the creativity of all involved - not only the farmers. This approach, which recognizes the farmers' capacity to innovate as the crucial component of success, provides a much-needed alternative to the conventional 'transfer of technology' paradigm. This book is a rich source of case studies and analyses of how agricultural research and development policy can be changed. It presents evidence of the resilience and resolution of rural communities in Africa and will be an inspiration for development workers, researchers and policy-makers, as well as for students and teachers of agriculture, environment and sustainable development.
